is it coinincidence that obertan, anderson and nani have the ability of dribbling but after coming to us, it is rare to see them doing so? anyway, it seems obertan lost confidence. maybe he needs to study how giggs played in his teen ages to improve

yep, I think Giggs was less inclined to take players on as he grew older. All in the name of the god: "possession". Trouble is, these flair players are always going to lose the ball more often than not but on the other hand are capable of pulling the game out of the fire.

As for Obertan, I like the fact that he's willing, and has confidence enough to have a go. Needs time yet, of course. Can't say I'm too optimistic about Anderson and hope I'm proved wrong. He'd be a beast if he developed the right way

At almost 22, I think he's just the wrong side of the line where a loan becomes beneficial.

He seems to have had a few set-backs in his career so far and so he's a bit behind where he should be in his development at this age already but there's definitely something there.

Considering the patience Fergie has shown with one or two other players (who, admittedly cost a lot more money) I can see Obertan being given a little more time to prove himself here.

I think he'll get a chance but he may benefit from a six month loan and use next season as his real shot because I don't see us being able to give him many games, especially with Cleverly due back in January.

I find some of the views of the match and even reviews for that matter from some journalists way off the mark, Obertan did very well but football365 for example have him down as playing poorly, as have several posters here. He made some good runs in general and showed very intelligent passing in tight positions, and was willing to take players on. Made quite a lot of attacking moves (once or twice getting dragged into blind alleys which can be taken against him) in nearly all cases managed to get a ball off or work his way to a pass back out to a player to keep the move flowing.
He was the most likely player to get moves going for the whole match up to when Chicharito came on.
And far less of the pointless dribbling and losing the ball I've seen previously

Bebe by contrast seems to have great reviews in some cases where he didnt quite deserve it. He was very inconsistent, good and bad at different points. Seems to mishit the ball quite a lot, made basic errors a few times, but then some very nice moments too. Promising but raw

The way he runs with the ball reminds of a certain handsome Portugeezer...

The talent is obviously there, early days though, he's very raw.

I like him.

I like him and Kiko. For once I see talent there and it is not from what others are saying, but little misses, attempts to pull something off etc.
He will come good.

Brilliant and shit. If he can learn to time his pass and protect the ball better I think he can make it. The mental picture and raw pace are there, and these things are difficult to coach. He is getting better slowly may be too slowly but he is getting better.

Dont think it was one of his best games, but every one will be able to see that the talent is there

You learn certain elements of the game in training but you need proper games to get your confidence, to feel part of the team and to get on the same wavelength of players (not to mention fitness). I also think it's harder when you are trying to impress in a team full of other players looking to impress and make their own mark

It took Nani 3 years and he was getting games 20+ a season. What makes people think Obertan is in any way, shape or form going to improve by getting the odd game here and there? Patience

He has ability, sometimes you have to be patient. If you look at Bebe on the other hand, now he can naturally (it seems) pick out a pass from a cross. He's shown that a few times. I think both have tremendous potential and we have to be patient

A very good summary, that.

Of the two of them Obertan definitely looked the more accomplished footballer. Which might explain why he got such harsh reviews.

It's much more frustrating watch a player fail to effectively use his obvious talents than it is to watch someone make the most of fairly limited talents. It was the moments of brilliance that made the rest of Obertan's game seem so poor.

Bebe looked far less adept IMO. Obviously he's had a lot less coaching at United than Obertan but it certainly showed in his performance last night.

I agree. I thought Obertan played really well. Made some great runs and really tried to surge forward whenever he could. Bebe's crossing was mostly quite abysmal. But I am sure that will come.

Macheda on the other hand looked quite awful, didn't seem to be bothered about making runs and seemed quite poor. At one stage he pointed to where he wanted Obertan to play the ball and than proceeded to run in the opposite direction! Awful.

I thought they both did well. Willingness to attack the opposition. Some intelligent dribbling. Didn't always come off for them but in the case of Bebe one thing did. Always good for a forward/winger to score on his first full debut. By the way what we haven't seen of Bebe yet is his finishing. More than one person has stated that his finishing ability is exceptional - yet we have him out there on the wing. Could be that he does a Thierry Henry after 1-2 seasons and becomes a foil or backup for Rooney - we'll see.

As for Obertain - I like him. I think he's an intelligent player with a footballing brain. Granted not everything came off for him but nice to see he's taking the step up and actually improving. For the last 6 weeks I've been worried that too many players were not improving.

Tx

He was very in and out of the game, I thought, but for me he did very well when he was involved. At one period in the second half we looked to him exclusively to create something, and although his final delivery wasn't quite there he was both willing and able to try and make something happen.

A bit hit and miss obviously, but with a little more playing time and some added confidence I think he can contribute on a bigger stage than the Carling Cup before too long.

I thought both Bebe and Obertan showed good potential and a mixture of good and bad moments. The fact one of them is the new boy in town and the other is last year's toy probably means the latter is more likely to be criticised harshly...

I agree, although I think both of them did ok last night. As you say Bebe looks like he has the potential but is a little behind Obertan in terms of realising it.

I haven't read any reviews but I think Obertan played quite well last night. You have to realise these guys aren't playing a lot or a lot together which makes it harder. I've liked what I've seen from Obertan in the last couple of games, I think with Valencia out he might get a chance and I think he looks like he could go on to be a real player given time.

I think Obertan probably did a little better than Bébé when on the ball but Bébé was involved a lot more than Obertan who had long periods out of the game.

I really do hope with Valencia out and Park being useless Obertan gets his big chance.

United desperately need some width at the moment and everything is going through Nani. Biggest problem is our next few Premiership games are going to be tough games and I'm not sure Gabi is at that level yet. Hopefully he can become a regular starter in the Carling Cup and Champions League games for a while and push on in the 'lesser' Prem games. I actually think he is so un-predictable he is our most exciting player and certainly has a huge potential IF he can continue to improve his consistancy.

na na na na na na na na Obertan!

Ober Ober Obertan! Obertan! Ober Obertaaaaaaan!

thought he was Jordi like for the first 70 mins, a bit bland and not direct enough, then the last 20 mins he was outstanding, a completely different player!

Smacked it, didn't he?

Corking goal, though he wasn't too impressive before things really got stretched at the end. I'm sure he'll learn to be effective in various situations as he gets experience, though.

The goal he scored tonight was very similar to one he scored for the Reserves last season. I love the way there's little backlift, he doesn't "broadcast" the fact that he's about to shoot which just leaves the keeper totally static when the ball flies past him.

Would love to see him kick on from here.

loved his goal, smashed it !

but not the best of defending i must say !

First half he gave away possession too often but 2nd half was superb. Stole the ball and drove up the pitch for the move that eventually lead to Fletcher's goal. Brilliant shot for his goal and looked so much better overall. Still think he tends to lose interest in the play at times when we are on the attack. Doesn't make enough effort to get into the box in support. Anyway, hope he builds on this display. Definitely want to see him get several starts over the next couple of months - Rangers and Valencia matches for instance.

Looks a very exciting player His height and speed plus trickery take him past players effortlessy at times from what I have seen.Nice finish for the goal, once He hits the straps will become a great asset to us no doubt about it.

He needs to work on his close control and link up play, could be a cracking player if he carries on working hard. He's already worked on his physical attributes, now it's time for him to sharpen up his technique.

Great run from the center that led to our first and a superb strike for the second, all in all an improvement I felt.

Much better second half. He's starting to find his form again and at the right time. Sometimes he struggles with his finishing but not tonight. He smacked it so cleanly and powerfully. We know he's capable of it so I'd like to see him hit the target more often.

great goal and a nice boost for him. The pace him and Bebe give us is really very good on the break. Obertan has great potential. It might take a year or two but we should be paitent because the raw materials there.

What the feck was that celebration? Heads, shoulders, knees and toes??

The goal changed him, that's how importance confidence is, I suppose.

He's a very exciting player, as is Bebe. God knows what will become of them, but they warrant our patience.

With Nani probably out for the game against Wolves we can expect to see another start for Obertan on Saturday, he's really grasping the opportunities that Ferguson is giving him- very likeable player.

Very poor in the 1st half I thought, don't know it it was a case of nerves or whatever...but completely different player in the 2nd half.

Let's hope we see more of the 2nd Half Obertan.

I missed the game due to school. But was he playing more centrally in the 2nd half?

That goal, what a strike. drool

He was poor in the first half, easy passes went straight to the opposite players. Big improvement in the 2nd half.

He seemed to lack confidence and its more a matter of his mind that football talent (Blanc once confirmed that). But I am sure that once he got that back, he will become a fine player, and there is no one better than Fergie to guide him there
