Gabriel Obertan | 2010/11 Performances

Floats off with the ball in great strides, I love to see it. He also showed more strength physically and used that to carve out good passing options for himself. Best performance we've seen from him, for me.

I thought he did very well. He's a cut above most players.

His final ball is frustrating but I'm convinced this lad has it in there... it just needs coaxing out of him a bit. A bit more game-time might bring it out of him but can we afford to chance it?

At the very least the staff can use this performance (and video of it) to show him why he's not exactly ready yet. Still hope he turns into the player we all see in him, as he has Ronaldian physical attributes; particularly his pace and acceleration with the ball at his feet.

I think he needs more starts for the first team with better players around him. The movement from the midfield & Macheda was a bit shit to be fair. Give him games with Scholes, Fletch, Berb/Roon/Hernandez & I reckon he'll show us a lot more.

Frustrating performance. Some great surges from deep but seemed to lack composure whenever he got near the box. Shot on the break when the score was 2-2 was terrible. Thought he started well then the confidence drained out of him. A bit unfortunate that Macheda would start to make a run then stop.

He really needs to offer more than that if he is to get playing time in the premiership or Champions League.

Thought he was great tonight, MOM ignoring the Hernandez cameo.

Yes his final ball was erratic at times, be he also demonstrated some great passing ability at other moments.

Should be given some first team opportunities in the coming weeks I reckon.

Bit erratic tonight, made some wonderful runs and did well at times but his final ball needs work.

Convinced he has the talent but it will take time to coax it out of him I think.

Still yet to be convinced he'll amount to anything for us. Not sure why and obviously I hope to be proven wrong. Hopefully he can get more games under his belt in this competition.

I thought he was poor, how many times did he run down blind alleys when in a promising position? He has some great touches and tricks, but on the most part they are aesthetically pleasing but ineffective.

I don't really like him central either, he looked far more dangerous when he was moved wide when Hernandez came on.

He was wank tonight i thought. Started the game lively but his decision making was infuriating at times, and his final ball very erratic. I can certainly see now why he hasn't been starting games in the league for us recently

Agreed. Seems as if some people are too easily impressed by a few tricks and flicks.

He was woefully ineffectual and his decision making was dire. His touch and passing were erratic at best as well.

He's got a lot of potential but is still a very raw talent.

His performance was, i dunno a bit spastic really, nothing seemed to come off apart from the ball when he tried a first touch that is, but hes shown more than enough in previous games to receive some patience and hes not unlike a young Nani at a similar stage.

I think he'll be a good player for us, but tonight did highlight hes still very very raw potential.

He's doubled in size but this doesn't appear to have made any difference in his footballing ability. At least his head looks a bit more normal now though.

I don't think he has improved in the last 12 months. His play was exactly the same last October. Hopefully will start showing some end product this season, or he will be off.

Very harsh comments all. He was for large amount of the game the player we looked to to make things happen, he was erratic at times but hasn't had a first team start all season(that I can remember).

Was very good tonight in his endeavour but lacked a little sharpness with his final ball. Also looked better on the rare occasions when he came central. More games over the next few weeks should see him become sharper and more decisive with his final ball but he was good tonight.

He remind me as Nani 3 years ago

I don't see the comparison. When Nani joined us he could score goals and cross really well. He just did as much really poor stuff as good stuff. Obertan does a few tricks and looks a bit dangerous but doesn't do anything with it. Poor judgement too. That shot was awful. I just don't see anything special about him. If he strengthens up, he could be useful as a squad player if we were to lose Park at some point though.

Seriously mixed reviews in the ratings thread some like me thought he was fairly gash others have him as MOTM.

So what was he tonight?

Thought he wasted his first chance in the middle tonight personally, and looked the biggest threat when he got on the outside of Elokobi(from Hernandez and Carrick's balls). He's got a very perceptive game on the ball but his execution of just about everything is quite poor, and you can't really have that in such an important creative position. It's hard to excel in that role from a young age, of course, but I think he's better off out on the wing for now because he's got so much maturing to do.

Doing tricks for the sake of it is just annoying too, in the end it only really unbalances himself and rarely opens any new space.

Can't see any comparisons to Nani whatsoever, besides the fact they play on the wings.

Nuff said.

I sense I'm missing the sarcasm(although if so it's completely out of the blue!) but I honestly haven't a clue. In amongst the clumsy dribbling, the sloppy passing and the frankly substandard crossing and shooting there's something there...it's just hard to pinpoint what. He knows how to attack the space with pure pace or intelligent movement, and he does seem very capable of combining dribbling at pace with smart passing, and he's always willing to offer a direct threat...but I dunno.

If I had to guess I'd say he'll be one that will always flatter to deceive but making a judgement on a 21 year old who's only just made his 20th pro career start* seems entirely pointless. I did the same with Cleverley just this summer and it looks like I might well have made a prat of myself on that one, so i'll reserve judgement! As should we all.

*That's right, it's just his 20th start in his career today! Largely thanks to injuries you'd imagine.

I think he could do with going on loan, I just don't see him getting enough games here to improve, there's very little chance he'll oust even Park from the left in the Prem games and a CC game every few weeks is not enough.

If we don't give him games he's unlikely to improve. He's been pushed around clubs before and doesn't seem to benefit from it, either in regard to his fitness levels or his confidence. He needs some games with us. Not just the odd one but a run of games. That way he'll understand exactly what's expected of him and also feel that he is part of the team.

Heap the responsibilty and expectation on him, trust him and he'll come good.

At almost 22, I think he's just the wrong side of the line where a loan becomes beneficial.

He seems to have had a few set-backs in his career so far and so he's a bit behind where he should be in his development at this age already but there's definitely something there.

Considering the patience Fergie has shown with one or two other players (who, admittedly cost a lot more money) I can see Obertan being given a little more time to prove himself here.

is it coinincidence that obertan, anderson and nani have the ability of dribbling but after coming to us, it is rare to see them doing so? anyway, it seems obertan lost confidence. maybe he needs to study how giggs played in his teen ages to improve
