Gaa 2013

I left the price of two pints for him in Rafferty's Rest, must be 2 months ago now, I called in the other day and was told he never called in so I said feck it I might as well swamp them.

This thread is awful quite lads, where's the cluiche peile crowd gone I wonder? I thought there was an All-Ireland final this weekend.

There's an international hurling festival going on in my constituency this week 'Camán For The Craic', nothing to exciting but I suppose it's bringing a bit of life to a somewhat dead town, we'll have a BBQ and a Marque with music in it, the usual craic.

San Francisco are playing Kilburn Gaels in Gort at 3:30pm tomorrow. The Rest of Britain will be taking on New York at the same time out the road in Kilbeacanty.

There's a few more matches taking place around the area as well, there's even a team over from Argentina and it'll all come to an end in Pearse Stadium on Sunday with a few finals.

There's not enough Mayo reds on here man. GeeMale tries his best, but he's been living in London for so long that he's become institutionalised. For me, my biggest concern this weekend is how I'm going to be able to see both the Final and the Derby live???

Record the match, watch the GAA. Or just flick between the two of them, but I wouldnt be up for that. You could watch the first half of the GAA, watch the soccer during half time and then back to the GAA, and straight to the soccer when the GAA is over. Should catch a lot of the soccer that way.

Still looking for a ticket, but my two best bets at getting one haven't come back negative yet so I'm still praying. Definitely gonna get a season ticket next year.

If I go to the pub there's one bar that I think will have both on, and if I watch it at home I think I'll watch the GAA on telly and have the derby streaming to the laptop so I can keep abreast of the match. Not perfect but what can a man do??

Its the best you could do I suppose. Doubt I'll see any of the derby on Sunday but I'll probably be reading BBC live commentary whenever I can. I wouldnt be able to record it and watch it later not knowing the score.

It's a pity that they didn't put the derby on earlier. I know I want to watch the minors with Tyrone playing but for most people in Ireland that would have suited better.

Not easy to do but what I have done in a situation like that is watch the GAA match live on the telly. Stay away from the telly, radio internet the whole lot for the rest of the evening so that you won't have a clue what the score was in the Utd match and then around 20 minutes before match of the day is about to kick off, tip up to Supermacs and get myself a snackbox and a smokey bacon burger meal, race back to the house put the feet up and watch match of the day.

Saturday afternoon/evening or Monday night would've been great, but Sunday at 4pm is their prime time so always going to be on then.

I wouldn't be able to do that I don't think, though I wish I could.

Monday nights are the bane of my life. I'm always working and more and more United games seem to be on then. I'm also not capable of taping a game or waiting for MOTD whilst ignoring the game. If I'm not watching it I'll spend more time checking the score on my phone than watching the GAA. Sad but true.

I met a lad from Argentina back in the Rugby world cup in france. He played for a rugby club named Hurling. Apparently it was a hurling club but they were forced to play rugby when the ash was unavailable around world war 2 or something so they couldnt get hurls. He was tracing his Irish roots when we met him in Paris and he was slumming it a bit. Turned out to be related to one of the lads we were travelling with. Small world and all that!

That's mad. Funny how the world works sometimes.

I'm still sticking with Mayo 4-6 for Sunday, but having doubts all the time. I expect that if Mayo's midfield can get to grips with Dublin, that it will be a platform the Dubs won't recover from. We could see the renaissance of young Brogan too. He kept plugging away last day out and it finally came through for him (in a way). Rock could have a major effect on the game, if given his go on time. If I was to tape a game, I would tape this one as I do expect it to be the best All Ireland since 2008.....[before that....'98.....'91......'82]?

Drove the N4 twice this week, west of Lucan all the flags are green and red. Papi has mobilised the culchies!

And as for this ... glad it wasn't the cocky Dubs.

Nuttin to do with me, moses. Honest injun.

This is off-topic a bit: I was looking at some club championships from the noughties. Anyone remember the Dunshaughlin/Rathnew sagas from 2000-2002?

2000
1. Dunshaughlin 2-5 Rathnew 0-11
2. Dunshaughlin 1-11 Rathnew 0-14
3. Dunshaughlin 3-8 Rathnew 1-6

2001
1. Rathnew 0-10 Dunshaughlin 0-10
2. Rathnew 0-16 Dunshaughlin 2-10
3. Rathnew 2-9 Dunshaughlin 1-6

2002
1. Dunshaughlin 0-12 Rathnew 1-9
2. Dunshaughlin 1-7 Rathnew 0-4

Eight matches in three years is unreal. Dunshaughlin have not won the Meath SFC since.

London??? I've spent maybe 5 days there ever, the Olympics last year - great week, but hardly institutionalised!!!

It's a pity the 2 games clash alright. I probably won't even know the score in the derby until well after the game. I can just imagine, gettign back to my brother's place after seeing Mayo lose, depressed as feck, and then find out United were battered too. Would be a long flight back to India after that!

I seem to remember Buenos Aires having a few GAA clubs while I was over there. There's a fair bit of history between the two countries really, the founder and first admiral of the Argentinian navy was a Mayo man, Admiral Brown, from Foxford I believe.

That being said, slumming it in Paris is a great way of tracing your Irish roots.

Dara O Se has a decent article in the Irish Times today which goes into the midfield issue too (link: http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/gae...spite-mayo-s-upper-hand-at-midfield-1.1531092)

I think he's right to be fair, I can see Mayo doing OK around the middle but maybe just not living with the Dublin forwards and half back line. We need the Dubs to pick O'Sullivan midfield really, so that Brennan is centre back and we can stick Dillon centre forward. Dillon wouldn't do too well going backwards against the speed of the Dublin half backs. Higgins could cover that off pretty well.

When are the teams announced, does anyone know?

Can't wait now, fying tonight so won't be on the Caf again for a while. Here's hoping for a great game, come on Mayo!

Yeah I'm recording this one too. Can only hope it lives up to the billing. I've been mightily impressed by O'Shea for Mayo but same with Mike Dara McCauley for Dublin. The pace of O'Sullivan and McCaffrey could have a huge bearing on this one and may be a reason why Mayo will employ their first sweeper of the championship. I hope not though and I hope it's like a rocky fight with all punches and blood and guts!

Yeah I read after that it was the most popular country for emigration after the England, the states, canada and oz and loads of midlands fellas went over in the early part of the 20th century. I remember him well because we went to the opening game between Argentina and France and he was in the same hostel as us and we arranged for him to get tickets to the Ireland Namibia game in Bordeaux I think and we all got buckled. He told us he was staying in a hostel but it turned out he slept in the train station and he got he texted us the next day because he got his camera robbed with all his photos. Fairly gutting as he had loads from Ireland. We got him a few pictures of the rugby nights out back on our phones and that but still felt bad for him.

Apologies for not putting these in spoilers (I'll figure out how to do so yet) but here's a few pic's of the Argentina lads whom apparently or going by what a lad that's involved in the looking after them in their time here are a (team/club) that are the descendants of Irish famine immigrants. Their club isn't far off being 100 years old. Mighty how they managed to keep the game of hurling alive within their or what must be a small enough community a after all these years or nearly a century.

Lucas Ruiz Cugat on the left there is their club captain with Bernardo Devereux on the right.

I was sure geemale was living in London.

He's abroad in India alright. Just goes to show too how far them Mayo lads will travel for love. I'm not to sure if there is any truth in it but rumor has it he's going to surprise the family by bringing her over with him. The spudz and the Kerry gold could do with being at the ready I'd say!

Good photos TBP. There won't be a fanny wantin' in Gort this weekend. Though how will those Argentinian lads get on with your Brazilians? First game of hurling between Argentina and Brazil?

I hate saying this this week, but... my girlfriend is a Dub

Ya culchie bastard, stealing our wimmin'!

But it's all good, I stole one of yours.

I hope you end up getting a cracking sympathy shag off your one on Sunday evening.

Stealing??? I was offered a fecking grant to take one of the Dublin birds! I sometimes think of our relationship as a community outreach program

Edit: This is not a cheap dig at Gee Male!! ;)

 I don't think me or any of the family would qualify as bandwagon in fairness!

That photo with a slightly edited caption would have been great to throw around facebook back during Euro 2012 though. For all the feckers that went along and wouldn't even watch Ireland on TV, because we were "too shite". I'm still bitter about that
