Fullbacks for the summer

What’s the actual stat? Attempted crosses or “successfull crosses” and what is the definition/ how do they determine which is which?

A successful cross is one in which the player from the same team touches the ball first after the cross.

Jose might think Valencia he can go on till he's 36 or 38 (give or take the odd Equador excursions) and pick him Ivanovic-style no matter what the grumblings.

He might be looking for back-up in that position, a Fabinho or TFM, with left-back being the priority.

Shaw is still struggling to convince the manager he can be the long-term solution so I'm sure Jose's got someone in mind for next season.

I think we are set at RB for next year to be honest.

Valencia, Young, TFM and and even Tuanzebe can fill in there.

I would hope Shaw will win the left bac role over the summer with possibly buying some competition for him and also Young covering there.

Whatever happens I don't want Young full time in either role - rotation for both sides no problem.

Should not sign anyone unless Its someone who is going to be one of the first names on the team sheet. Don't need any more rotation players.

Clearer than ever, the shiteshow at RB & LB is killing this team. Honestly Valencia and Young are midtable quality ...

Yeah, been saying this for years now. RB should be our top priority in the summer and we really need to sort out LB as well, either fully trust Shaw or replace him as well.

Even though I like Shaw very much, his fitness was and still is a problem he can't sort out. I hope that Darmian rumours to Juventus are true and the deal involves Alex Sandro.

We need to do a city and buy two quality fullbacks this summer.

Was it me or does Shaw is back to looking fat again?

IMO we need more a left back, I like Shaw, but it seems he wont have a run of games.

Alex Sandro is a must if he is available.

RB is more difficult. Sidibe and Meunier is the only candidates i know of, unless we plan to get Rafael back

Some reports have linked us to this guy and I really like the look of him. Looks like a fantastic crosser, has a variety of passing in his locker from effortlessly dispatching low accurate crosses to the higher floated ones. Love the way he glides on the right hand side.

I agree with that. If we are buying, we should buy someone who will be in starting XI straight away. No point in buying youngster with potential or someone who is seen as 'equal' to our existing options and has to rotate.
Jose does not trust Shaw, so there is no point in keeping him - even as a backup. Shaw has had enough time to show what he can do, and I am afraid its not enough. I will bring in an established LB - who will be cemented starter.

Yeah this team needs starters, we have enough back up players, especially as FBs
Darmian, Young, Blind, Valencia, Shaw - that list has 2 30+ wingers and a multi utility player.
The two true full backs we have are a bit meh.
100 mill on FBs and 100 mill on CMs, with about 30 mill in sales shifting the likes of Blind, Darmian.

I wouldn't sell Shaw, I mean Jose doesn't trust him and he won't be our starting FB next season, but I would keep him. He's still relatively young and he's English.
I would give him a 2+1 contract see how he does for a year or even two and sell him If things don't work out.Althogh I'm not his biggest fan, I believe there is a player in there somewhere.

My first choice would be Sandro and Meunier, although the latter could be a bit difficult to acquire. But he loves united, follows United and has good connection with Lukaku.
Maybe add Alderweireld too, the Belgian connection.
Not entirely sold on Sidibe as I feel he is a bit meh defensively.
And I wouldn't mind a super talented youngster like Odriozola although I can see him going to Madrid. Even if we sign a RB and sell Darmian our cover at RB is pretty poor as I don't think TFM had enough attacking qualities to makea good modern FB

For me, and I've been saying this for a long time, none of our defenders are particularly outstanding players, I think they are all quite standard, and none that I'd feel really gutted to lose, with the exception of Bailly.
In my opinion, all of our defenders are 'squad players' none of them are what I would deem automatic first choice XI players.

Yes I accept all the stats about defensive records blah, blah, blah, but I believe that so much of that is owed to the cautious and pragmatic brand of football that we have played since SAF retired, and also in no small part to the fact that we have the best Keeper in the World.

Just to throw a few names into the ring....Rio, Vidic, Irwin, Neville, Evra, Stam, Bruce, Pallister.....I could go on, but which of our current crop are anywhere near as good as those players..?
Forget about talking about potential, I'm talking about players that deliver top class performances, on a consistent basis, week in week out.
Players that you have 100% faith in?

As many have already pointed out, in the modern game, a defenders role is so much more than just destroying attacks and hoofing it up the pitch, and if your defenders aren't capable then the whole team will be stunted by this deficiency.

Hopefully we go full tilt at trying to bring in FBs such as Sandro, Ghoulam, Fabinho or Meunier this Summer.
I also believe that we really need an outstanding CB too, and I really hope that Mourinho ruthlessly targets these positions over the Summer.

Fabinho or Meunier for me at right back. I love Tony V but feck me he is afraid to cross to anything thats not a shin. As for left back...sigh Im losing faith that Shaw will ever come good and subsequently I would be nervous of Sessegnon and Tierney being bought due to their age. Young has to be let go this summer in my opinion. Our full back play is a huge part of our problem.

For sure, I really like Alvaro Odriozola and the way he moves on the field. Along with someone like Benjamin Henrichs from Bayer Leverkusen, I rate him as one of the most exciting young full backs in europe. The question is of course if they are ready to take the step to the Premier League at this time.

That's our problem. Too many players "who can fill" in. Too many players who can cover and do a job. We need players in their dedicated positions. We need genuine, legit attacking full backs to provide width. Jose once said he wanted "specialists". Let's see that them and stop messing about with players that can fill in. Some versatility is needed in every squad but not to the extent we have. Our team isn't close enough this season to city. They will improve their squad in the summer. We need to as well. Young, Valencia -good servants but time is up. They have to be at best squad players next season.

I agree with the above post, this "can do a job" mentality needs to end, it's ok for squad options to a degree, but a club like United should have 2 trop class specialist fullbacks.

I think both are our best options there, but I am not sure there's a chance either is happening. Fabinho would be playing for us by now, if we were interested. If we go for him, you have to wonder what we waited for. Meunier I can't see leaving due to Dani Alves' age and PSG needing to sell other players. Then again they might do what they did with Aurier and loan out Meunier's replacement, before they buy that player later on.

Absolutely. Top quality FBs will take us up another level. Its a must given our narrow wide players approach

I completely agree with every single part of this post . Apart from Bailly and Valencia none of our defenders are even close to being world class. We need someone like Alderweirald he’s my dream signing. Someone senior and premier league proven to organise and delegate. Our best defender shouldn’t be a 23 year old Bailly.

well no transfers dont work that way, it sounds like he could be on the move this summer though.

runmours about Alex Sandro are picking up pace (with the "evidence" being we have and Italian who can go the other way)

Definitely. That and midfield

Wide forwards and full backs for me. Pogba / Matic + Mctominay / Herrera and Pereaira are good enough.

We have no top wide forward, just potential in Martial and the rest fairly poor out wide (barring the occasional goal from Rashford, Lingard etc).

Valencia is better than fine and since Young is going to be staying he can be a backup. We absolutely need a new left back more than anything. There isn't a whole lot to choose from. Isn't it time for Kurzawa to step up?

I think we'll go for Rose - not that I'd want us to sign him. Last thing we need is another defender with injury problems who struggles to defend.

The injuries are a shame, he was at a very high level in his final full season at Spurs. Legs are gone now. Second best left back at his club.

My dream would be to get Alex Telles from FC Porto and Florenzi from Roma. Alternative would be Ricardo Pereira from FC Porto.

Edit: Alex Sandro would be first choice for me but just don't see us getting him.

what is the profile of fullbacks you'd like to see this United sign?

Also does that differ from the profile of fullback you think Mourinho would like to bring in/if not how do the two differ?

Alex Sandro and TFM, sell Shaw, Blind and Darmian.

Not sure if TFM is the answer. Palace fans seem to have mixed feelings about him. Has good physical ability but not the qualities on the ball that a fullback needs nor seems to understand how to position himself there.

Personally still think of him as a cb, but that's probably mostly based off my (very high) opinion of him back at Ajax.
