Fullbacks for the summer

It's amazing how we haven't looked at Tierney at Celtic. Say what you want about the standard of Scottish football and that but his performances in the Champions League in the past two years against teams who play at a higher standard have been excellent.

People rave about Andy Robertson at Liverpool but Tierney is a much superior left-back and I think he's ready to go to a top club, even though he says he'll find it hard to leave Celtic right now.

There have been zillion reports that we have scouted him a numerous times but apparently he wants to stay with Celtic.

If you think we’ll win the league with raving Shaw and a mediocre 33 yo winger - you’re having a fecking laugh.

We need at least one more LB otherwise we will have 0 chance with these duds.

Makes me wonder if Jose is of the outdated opinion that full back is a low priority position where you can save money and stick any two players.

United should take whatever they can get for Shaw. Waste of space and clearly doesn't care enough to save his faltering career despite many opportunities to step up to the plate.

Sandro should be United's top target for me. Great crosser and otherwise good on the ball, physical (strong & quick), proven at the highest level and in his prime. He would transfer United's left-hand side IMO. Question marks are of course if he'll want to join or if Juve will sell - price will likely be at least €60m I would have thought.

Other potential options:

Jonas Hector (would likely be cheap and Germany's starting LB, but apparently looking to stay at Koln despite their relegation)
Bernat (good player but not a starter at Bayern)
Gaya (think he might have just signed a new deal however)
Ghoulam (quite expensive now due to new contract and recent ACL injury)
Rose (form has taken a massive dip though since last injury)
Bertrand
Grimaldo
Tierney (great potential but unproven)
Ferland Mendy (had a strong season for Lyon and looks a good player)

Right-back is obviously done with Dalot, who I don't know much about to be honest but is highly-rated and cost south of £20m so doesn't seem a bad bit of business.

I do think Meunier would have been perfect but whether that was ever realistic I don't know. United maybe could have got in there early with a good bid when PSG were in need of cash for FFP, and he is a United fan and probably still being Dani Alves so might have been tempted. Odriozola is a player I rate as well and maybe could have been looked at as a more proven RB signing who's more ready to start day 1 than Dalot.

I think Meunier looked really good in the last match
But PSG won't let him go most probably

Are we actually in for Sandro? Possible we might have baulked at the asking price and lowering our sights elsewhere whilst saving most of our budget for other positions.

His understanding with Lukaku makes him a very good option plus he’s a Red. Easy decision.
Agree, those two reasons alone are enough to buy him. Plus he's 191 cms tall.
But the probability of us signing him is almost zero

Damn only just heard about Real signing Odriozola for €40mil. From what I saw he looked like a great prospect for our RB position who was ready to go in and play.

It's looking like another season of has-been wingers at fullback, with a teenage understudy at RB and Shaw basically becoming the new Anderson with yet another "This season will be the one where he cements his place!" chance where he'll likely not get enough consecutive games to even stake a claim.

We signed Dalot for RB, its the LB that has me concerned.
True but for me Valencia needed replacing and I’m not sure Dalot will be given that role or just be back up to him for a year or 2. Maybe Fosu will take the RB spot but I’m sure I read they are looking to send him out on loan.
LB I’m not that overly concerned with, Shaw when he played did well and hopefully with more consistent playing he’d start to affect the attacking phase more. Will Jose play him is another story tho.

I like Shaw but putting our faith in him to come good is almost as naive as when I thought Anderson would eventually come good.
No other top tier team would have persisted with him this long and the team should not be planned around him.

We have to buy a starting full back who can give the strikers consistent service in the box...we havent had that in years

I suspect that Jose views the full back positions as low priority, where he can save money to spend elsewhere.

It looks that way. A CB is likely to set us back £60-70m+. Probably then a case of picking between a leftback and a backup striker (my guess is we'll go for the latter).

We're the richest club in the wotld and people are talking about us not bothering with fullbacks to save money. Utter nonsense. We'll be trying to bring in a fullback.

LEFT OUT Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho scraps left-back search to focus on signing Romelu Lukaku back-up

Jose Mourinho to prioritise signing a new striker over a left-back

Man Utd have prioritised signing a centre-back this summer but they have their ideal left-back in place next summer.

True but his problem at the moment just seems to be Jose. Anderson was injured pretty much every couple of weeks. Shaw was fit and playing for a good portion of last season. It is a risk I just think he can do the job we want, it’s just will he be allowed to. I just feel like he needs to be played this year so we can actually see if he can do it. The few outings he had this past season he looked quite decent. Still had room to improve but overall I was pretty impressed.

Heck we’ve stuck by Jones for how long now?

Jones is another that should be long gone

I'm not sure.
Last season Jose was hell bent on getting a LW (Perisic). The saga went on all Summer and in the end, we didn't fork out the money which was being demanded.
Perisic would've been great for us, as he is a natural crosser of the ball and fits Jose's profile of players, perfectly (late 20s, grafter/hard worker, willing to run through brick walls, follow instructions to the letter).
Imagine Perisic crossing the ball into Lukaku (or even Fellaini). We'd definitely have had more points.

This bring us to Summer 2018. So far, we have only bought 1 first team player (Fred).
Then there is the issue of Jose being lulled into a false sense of security, that he won't be fired if we do badly this coming season. LVG and Moyes both fells for Woodward's assurances and I hope Jose doesn't fall for this. He needs to win the league title this season and get the players in, to achieve this goal.

My only hope is that Young has a goat season and stays fit while Dalot will have an excellent breakthrough season pendling between LB and RB

I know the ship has likely already sailed, but Perisic was immense last night. Can understand why Inter did their best to hold onto him.

If we aren't able to sign Alex Sandro or Alex Telles, I'd be happy with Jorge or Maitland-Niles as competition for Young.

Maitland-Niles? The young Arsenal star who’s real position is CM?

We won’t be getting him and certainly not for LB.

We're starting the season with Valencia and Young in the first XI, aren't we? I know it's early and all that but I don't have a good feeling...

Played well on the left last season. They also have Kolasinac and Monreal. Not saying it's going to happen btw, just hoping for someone there.

I hope for Sandro or Telles. Maitland Niles will be a top CM imo

I'd cheekily bid 60m for Marcelo, try test the waters for better wages.:D
