Fullbacks for the summer

It will be Young and Valencia starting the first game of the season unfortunately. Mourinho is happy with them.

Amavi would be another, I'd be happy with, if aren't getting one of the usual names.

It's almost as if Jose wants to fail.

I don't think he wants to fail, but I'm definitely getting a strong vibe from him that he genuinely knows he cannot win the PL with this team. He knows he can't bridge that gap this season and it'll probably be his last, just the feeling I get. Partially right, partially wrong - yes, we need stronger signings, but he can't get much of a tune out of what he already has anyway.

I don't think that's the case at all, our Record against top 6 was perfectly fine last season,it was against stokes, burnleys, Leicester, west brom, Huddersfield's we struggled against and that's very manageable if one can improve as a team in creativity and ruthlessness in final Third.

Have a strong feeling that with Ronaldo's arrival at juventus Sandro might not be very keen to come here and would want to stay on improved terms at Juventus if proved otherwise. In terms of right back we have already addressesd the situation with Dalot and Valencia too has not been in danger to loose his place ever. The team has enough potential to become champions with the right tactics and mentality in every game. It's just that if few improvements are made we must be completely ready to challenge for title. If Mourinho takes enough risk when needed and shows flexibility I see no reason why not.

It's almost as if Jose wants to fail.

Somebody needs to tell him that if he doesn't buy a LB and a RW, he is probably going to get sacked.
The problem we have is Woodward is making the managers feel very comfortable and when they inevitably fail to make top 4, they sacked and the managers in question wonder what the hell just happened.

I...I'm definitely getting a strong vibe from him that he genuinely knows he cannot win the PL with this team. He knows he can't bridge that gap this season and it'll probably be his last, ....

It is possible.

Sandro Is the obvious choice. But it seems that is more realistic to see him staying at Juventus or signing for PSG. If that happens, we should try to go for Tierney, a young player like him would allow Young to rotate with him.

I would like Sandro and happy to give Dalot a chance at RB for this season. We need a CB and a tricky right winger also.

I would rather prioritise other positions. Like getting Bale. I'm happy with Young and Valencia for now.

So our back four, to face Leicester on 10/08, as it stands will be:

Valencia - Smalling - Jones - Young

Everyone to the 'Optimism' thread, quickly, to claim we're going to turn a corner this season and give City a really good bloody run for their money...

Scary isn't it. What a mess.

If that’s what’s going to stop the likes of Sané and Co. then god help us. To me, this is what giving up looks like.

Have you seen his latest pictures? He's ripped believe it or not. Still don't think he'll come good for us though.

Meunière should have been on our list. The guy has shat all over Danny Rose in the first half.

I think we missed a bullet with Rose.

28yo full back who relies on his pace and only really looked top class for 12-18th months of his career. Barely played in the last year so shouldn't be too harsh on him.

I do sometimes wonder if in the modern game full backs have a shorter peak than other positions, so much required physically from them.

I think right back is sorted for the season with Valencia and Dalot.

We can't go into the new season with Shaw and Young as our options at left back, I don't really know enough about left backs around Europe to give any names but i've always liked Tierney at Celtic and Sandro at Juventus.

As it stands, the team which starts against LCFC, is essentially, the same which finished the previous season (+Fred).
And given that Lukaku and Pogba will be missing, our first game of the season will be made up of players, worse than what we had at the end of last season.
It's an unbelievable situation which could well see Jose sacked. He'll have to work miracles to get 2nd place, again. IMO, we are gearing up for a fight for 4th place, unless we can bring in some top class players (which I do not believe is going to happen).

We never learn, that's the depressing thing. Season after season we tolerate shite players stinking out the first team.

This is very worrying. I have no idea what goes through the heads of the managers we have had. They constantly fail to address the obvious failings in our team and predictably it always goes wrong.

If he isn’t getting any new full back, then at least I hope he gets a right winger in... and I mean a proper right winger who stays out wide a lot of the time and getting consistently good crosses in the box.

One of our main problems is lack of true quality of width. It makes it easier for teams to defend against us if they know literally all our attacking players like to cut into the middle.

A RW means the pressure is off of Valencia to get forward and provide an attacking outlet and that he can first and foremost defend which is what he has become good at.

This is a bit like Ferguson with the midfield at this stage. Maybe we should grab Evra back.

Fergie still managed to win league titles though, so we'll see.

Fully agreed. Feel like we haven't had any decent full backs for 5 years now.

I would love Pavard on the right.

Anyone see Mourinho talking about Valencia being injured?

If you don't think he wants a full back you're mental. He obviously wants to strengthen this area, and has even hinted we are weak there. Positive deals are going on in the background but just haven't happened yet hence why Darmian is still here.

What did he say?

Basically said we should get used to these injuries hinting that his age means he's going to pick up knocks.

Sounded to me like a push to United to get something done. It's obvious he knows we need to strengthen here but I don't think it's as easy as some here make out. PSG, one of the richest in the world, had to settle for an out of contract Dani Alves remember. It's a difficult position to fill unless you get lucky with a Robertson like Liverpool or pay an obscene amount like City for Walker and Mendy.

Think we will have to go big in the end hence why negotiations are going to the wire.

I took it in a more negative way in that we’d need to get used to seeing Valencia pickup more knocks at his age because he’s going to be playing a lot. Remember we’ve already signed his understudy in Dalot

And whichever way you take it, he wasn’t talking about a LB so get used to it now lads and it will hurt less in 2 weeks time when the window shuts
