Where are you seeing that he’s legally owed nothing?

Barcelona then negotiated a new deal for De Jong to keep him until 2026, with De Jong earning just €3m fixed salary in 2020/21 and €9m in 2021/22, giving up as much as €16m in total. That amount is due to be paid across the four years left on his contract.

There, right there!

He like any footballer, has been paid to date. Ergo, he's "owed" nothing legally.

If he stays, he'll be paid as per his contract. Of course, morally, if he leaves now he won't get the money from year 1 and 2 that he agreed to instead receive in years 3-6, unless he and Barca come to an agreement. That's the issue here, and not an easy one settled in court.

As Danny Murphy confirmed, often a footballer leaving a club, say himself from Liverpool to Charlton, where the player is likely to get a lower wage, the current club and player agree on a severance package.
It looks like FDJ and Barca are absolutely miles apart in agreeing what that package should be. Hence, "you're a back up centre half you knob, now take what we are offering and feck off".

This article explains it in detail.

At current, De Jong still has four years left on his contract with Barcelona and Marca have reported that across that remaining time Barcelona will owe him €88.58 million in fixed salary and loyalty bonus payments.

However, there are multiple other clauses in the deal that could be added. They include:

1. A variable payment of €8 million (€2 million per year) if he stays at the club and plays more than 60% of games in each of the four seasons left on his contract.

2. €12.8 million (€3.2 million per year) for title wins and progression to the finals of the UEFA Champions League.

De Jong's annual wage

Furthermore, De Jong has seen his annual wage decreased due to the impact COVID-19. The report from Marca reveals that de Jong received €12.32 million in fixed salary instead of €14 million due to the club enforcing a 12% paycut on all first-team players.

Nothing you have said contradicts what @WPMUFC has said. Barca are paying FDJ what he is entitled to each week and whenever any bonus is due.

The problem is that FDJ signed away a chunk of what he was originally owed today for even more in the future. He sees it as a matter of fairness that Barca make up what was originally owed to him today, as he considers having signed away today’s money as a goodwill gesture to help Barca through a sticky patch. Meanwhile they see him as a badly advised mark who can now be sold, perfectly legally, so they no longer have to pay him tomorrow’s greater money.

I doubt United are paying much of that up front. De Jong would still be saleable in future seasons too, so not as if selling him is a case of now or never.
The problem is that they need to get his salary off before the can register the likes of Rafinha and Lewandowski.

Unless you think they’re ok with not registering them for La Liga andjust letting them sit in the stands while collecting their salary.

Imagine being told you're moving into CB then finding out your club is signing another CB meaning you won't even get to play there either.

Talk about being the shittiest club on earth haha

This is correct. De Jong got played like a sucker.

spot on and the contract language will say absolutely nothing about "owed" or "deferred' wages. The contract will state exactly the terms he agreed in the reduction. The balloon wages over the length of the contract are "assumed" by FDJ's team as "owed". Legally, Barca are following the contract to the letter. The moral scumbag part of it is trying to now get another wage cut to lock in future losses for FDJ, seek MUFC terms or sit on the bench as a reserve CB.

It’s so obvious that they’re forcing him out. Presumably, they’re confident that he’s not going to agree to the wage reduction. This will happen

Bench CB for an entire season, in a world cup year. Or play every single game with a manager that is desperate for you, and play in your exact position. Not hard, imo

I think it's been well reported that he doesn't want to enter into any kind of discussion about wage reduction, but this is Barca were on about and they'll definitely try to force the issue

It's a bit of a dangerous game. For sure there are some dubious clauses in the contract Frenkie signed, otherwise this would have been done and dusted by now, either by mutual agreement either in court.

One thing Barsa did during this whole saga is feck their image even more.

You'd think so. But Lewandowski basically threw Bayern under the bus to go there, Raphinha had only eyes for them when Chelsea were interested, it looks like Koundé is also disregarding Chelsea in the hope that Barca might actually be able to pay him something and Bernardo Silva is (allegedly) looking to leave the best team in the world, playing in the best league in the world, to earn substantially less money (factoring in the under the table payments from oil clubs) if any at all at Barca.

I think that's what is most infuriating about this saga is that players would still sell their souls to go there in spite of the fact that they routinely stab loyal players in the back, are a mess behind the scenes, have a rookie coach, are struggling to register them, may not be able to pay them the wages they agree with them and have not looked like a threat in the CL for many many years now. Their reputation does not suffer from the stuff that would tank any other club (except Real) and it irritates me.

He's mugging himself off now. This is like when you put someone on an impossible performance plan at work. It's over. Either leave with your head held high or go through months of being forced out.

Let this all be a lesson to you. Never ever help your boss by leaving money on the table.

Now that EtH is back from Australia I would think there will be some serious chit-chat with the transfer negotiating team. Next week will be pretty vital in deciding the course of action.

It's a dirty tricks campaign. De Jong should hold firm, Barcelona will have to pay him his money one way or another. They're just hoping he'll blink first.

Nope, but they are making crystal clear that option comes with a caveat of being a rotation option at CB, and during a WC year.
I just can't see any kind of way he can stay at Barca now and play regularly. He's not wanted at CM and he's not even really wanted as a CB, so his only option to get playing time is to leave?

Equally they aren't going to want an €85m asset on huge wages who just isn't playing at all either. It's a headache from their perspective too.

He moaned about his Barca position even when things were rosier with them, as he wanted to play deeper... careful what you wish for Frenkie.

Chances are, the later it gets into the window and he's getting very little playing time, he quite possibly could blink first and hand in a request.
I'm thinking the only reason he's holding strong is because it's a lot of money and Barca will want to get someone else in like Silva with the transfer fee they get from him. So if Barca are content with their options now, they'll play the waiting game until de Jong blinks. If Barca desperately want Silva, they'll blink first and pay what de Jong want to get him out and a replacement in. It's a bit of a tense situation at the moment

They've done and are continuing to do business, so they have a headache regardless of who aint playing. Someone on big money will be on the bench if Kounde comes and FDJ stays.

The Frenkie headache they are clearly pushing the hardest to get rid of asap.

It sounds like he isn't owed any money legally but if barca want him gone they will need to come to some sort of compromise

Eventually a champions league team will come in and he’ll be happy to move which in my opinion is a silly attitude to take considering he played his best under ETH and we should be out of CL for one season.

If reports are true and he really doesn’t like or want to come to United it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and I don’t like the idea of forcing a player who will be unhappy to join.

In all seriousness I think he does leave Barca but I think he ends up at either PSG or Chelsea and most likely just becomes another name in their squads like he is at Barca. At United we’d build around him.

I think he’s being poorly advised and he is a little bit blinded by Barca and his love for them and doesn’t really consider any other clubs beyond their “on the face of it” opportunities.

He’s coming across a little silly.

Of course, they're a badly run club. There was a report saying he'll be their highest earner with Lewandowski this season if he stays. I can't imagine that (and missing out on a huge transfer fee) is something they can ignore entirely.
