I don't blame the club one bit for pursuing this deal. They've met with Barcelona and have had the deal agreed (if reports are to be believed), so United have done all they can. Barcelona's behaviour throughout all this is pretty terrible, to be honest. Announcing that Raphinha is coming for £50-60 million whilst still not giving de Jong the much-publicised money that they owe him is scandalous. How can you plead poverty one minute and ask players to take pay cuts, and then make signings like that? It's appalling behaviour. I fully understand de Jong digging his heels in and refusing to make any moves until he gets what is owed. This is all on Barcelona.
United have made all the right moves up until now. If there is truth that our deadline is Friday, then I'm fine with that. Set the deadline, and either get the player, or spend the rest of the window looking at and getting other attainable targets. We can't get into a situation where this is rumbling on until the end of the window and we miss the chance to get our other targets, and still miss out on de Jong.

He doesn't have to accept it of course, he can leave. Minus the monies owed.
If he wants to stay, he'll have to accept it... the contract he has runs until 2026 and so long as Barca pay the monies by June 26 they've legally done nothing wrong.
Barcelona can't afford to pay him 88 million over 4 years to have him benched. That should go without saying. Barcelona is under much more pressure to resolve this situation than de Jong.
It's not so much they'll do anything to stay there, more so that he simply accepted the reality of the situation and decided to take the lesser wage to stay. He's just the most recent and obvious player to do so.
FdJ holds all the cards in this but contractually Barca have to pay him so it's up to Barca to figure out the HOW part and it's not his obligation to make things easier for him.

simple truth and solution would be Barca lowering the asking price to 50m euros and United paying FdJ the 15m in a bonus for signing with United then pay his wage packet

Well we don't know what the future holds and what other deals they have in mind to create revenue.
They held onto the ESL strongly for a reason, it isn't going to go away. TV revenue will likely increase and I'm aware they've sold off a percentage of that to investors, they should still likely earn more.. its not like the price is going to drop for football TV contracts in the future.
Why does De Jong have to accept a paycut to stay? His contract is bound by law. If he doesn't want to change anything then they have to pay the money he is owed. This won't make De Jong popular among club management and fans. But he absolutely doesn't have to accept a paycut in order to stay.
Now he could accept a temporary wage deferrment as earlier. Get paid everything over the contract length by June 2026. But why should he agree to this when he's already done this once and they are in no better place? If it was me I'd be worried that Barca might be bankrupt by 2026, and want what I was owed up until now to be paid now before I accept to defer any more payments.
yeah, I agree. Barca are waiting for their finances to get better so they can use a higher proportion of sales to buy players.
However; we have to understand one thing though, this is not a problem from the United side, people saying our board or whatever, this is solely a Barcelona problem and it is unfortunate that we are stuck in this deal.
Unfortunately, we cannot just move on because there is no FDJ alternative out there, even the likes of Neves would cost £50m plus but his quality is nowhere near of FDJ.

The semantics of it are irrelevant. He's earning less, you know... a pay cut.
At this point I kind of feel like it's more likely that we chip in to pay part or most of his deferred wages rather than walk away

Some in this thread are willing to decry Romano as a fraud, a tap-in merchant and a guy who knows nothing about our business right up until he says that De Jong doesn't want to leave and then he all of a sudden becomes ultra-reliable, that is until he then says that the deal is not dead, when he's once again "just recycling old news".

As of today they can't even register Kessie and Christensen and they just announced Raphinha on top of that. Yes, we can say with decent certainty that missing out on de Jong's transfer fee, demoting him while seeing his current contract out is a completely impossible option for Barca.
I specifically phrased it as "not willing to sacrifice anything to play". Barcelona's 40% reduced offer was still the best offer Dembele got, he doesn't sacrifice anything by accepting as he has no better option financially. If de Jong were to accept the ridiculous Barca offer it would absolutely be unprecedented.
Also, what are the less recent players to do so outside of la masia regiment for whom it was still mostly wage defferals?
We'll never know the true details to this deal but rest assured, FDJ will get his deferred wages. My guess is we agree a lower fee with Barca and then agree to pay FDJ the deferred wages over the course of his contract with United. Barca is in no position to play hardball over this. ETH definitely wants the player but he's not stupid to suggest we get bent over and risk losing other targets. The alternative is we pass due to financial reasons and they're stuck with him and have to pay him. They still owe other current and past players including Messi if reports are true. They still owe other clubs money for players they don't even have anymore if reports are true. They're signing players so they must have found the money somewhere. Barca is a mess but I still think we'll do a deal that makes sense for all three parties. I'm not losing any sleep over it.

Seems a bit of an over simplification. If he's owed them over a timeframe like his remaining contract he's not going to get them as a lump sum just because he wants to leave. As for their expenditure if it's spread out in instalments then they could very well be reducing their yearly outgoings at the completion of the FDJ deal.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's the player holding this up as he wants the lump sum. You'd expect United and Barca could sort the books out to pay him as is but if FDJ wants a lump sum then the deal will be a no go.
