The contract is legally binding, if its still in effect. Which it won't be when he leaves the club and signs a new one with us.
The wages were deferred to the remainder of his contract which runs till 2026. I think thats the point of contention and where barca are trying to weasel their way out of paying anything.

FdJ has a contract. If he stays he will get his agreed salary which includes his deferred wages. What about this don't people get. He doesn't need a stronger hand with Barca. He quite literally has the best hand. He holds almost all the cards unless Barca, a club in a financial clusterfeck of a situation decide to completely shoot themselves in the foot and not play him. They would still be paying him though. That is the only power they have over him. Will he play or not. Thats it.
Everything else is a question of "will FdJ accept any reduction in his deferred wages due to move and how much of those deferred wages are Barca will to pay to persuade him to move".
I of course know the contractual obligations are still there, but De Jong stating publicly that he wouldn't mind a move would give Barca an improvement to their negotiation stance.
You say he would be the good guy to everyone but the Barca fans, well what happens if he says he is open to a move, but they cannot agree on how to make this deal happen. Then he would have to stay and be abused by the Barca fans.

De Jong gains nothing by stating in public that he wants to move, as long as United know privately that he is open to move as long as De Jong and Barca can agree on what to do with his deferred wages. For now it's a Mexican standoff between them, while we wait to see what happens after triggers are pulled.

I'm addressing the point about his public statements and wanting to stay. He could easily say I want to move, It puts the ball firmly in our court and forcing a deal as it puts pressure on Barca to resolve, essentially its all parties vs Barca then. If he wants the money that badly go in for the kill, get the deal done and move on with life.
Instead he is choosing to kiss the Barca badge and say he is happy and allowing it to drag on relentlessly.
Pretty sure Bale opted for similar actions to force the move from Spurs to Real many moons ago.

If a player publicly states he wants to leave, then it might be construed as an official transfer request, which would likely forfeit even more loyalty payments/bonuses due to him.
I don't think any player who is professional would openly state he wants to leave his current club.

The contractual pay he was on vs the new deal is 40% less. That is reported literally everywhere, a simply google search confirms it.
Basically if he was on 100k up to the point of the old contract expiring, he is now on 60k... 40% pay cut.

A transfer request is in writing, they can construe or perceive verbal sentiments how they like. I'm pretty sure the written agreement would trump most every sentiment he makes about considering his future / proposals from other clubs.

It’s definitely not smart at all. They already have a massive squad with plenty of good players in young to prime age that all need to play to develop. Since Kessie the only area they are really short on top quality or potential top quality is full back and striker and they go out and sign Raphina even though they already have Fati, Torres, Dembele and Depay who can play there. It’s daft squad management. They just needed to tighten up for a season or two and sell the older lads, return the terrible loans, sell their players out on loan and take a hit there and regroup. Instead they are forcing one of their best and most saleable players out the door (who’s to say they couldn’t get far more for him the future) and selling their future income streams at a cut price not taking inflation into consideration. They actually tried selling him in Jan and the only reason his has this new offer is because he managed a couple of good months without injury to tempt Xavi and the club into what likely will be another mistake.

Mitten is as close to Manchester United and Barcelona as any journalist, if not closer. 60% chance it is. Another two or three weeks will really test fans patience though.
This is wrong. A legally binding contract is a legally binding contract. The relevant provisions will almost always survive termination. FDJ doesn’t waive his rights just by leaving Barca… if he doesn’t come it’s because he doesn’t want to come.

I understand his old deal ran out, he was a free agent. The point I am making is they let it run out, they didn't make him a new proposal with increased wages.
That contract ran its course, then they offered him a new deal which is 40% less than his prior one.
And I don't disagree at all on how much of a disaster he's been, doesn't change the fact they are now paying him 40% less then then original contract he had with Barca.
