Clearly, he isn't entitled to the salaries for the future years if he moves to United. He only just needs to claw back the deferred payments. It really isn't that complicated to figure out -- unless Barca is being cnutish about it.

Someone must be confused with pretax and post tax number. Over 4 yrs for the remaining contract, he will receive 70-80m pre-tax salary. They thought it as post-tax.

Messi's last contract at Barca was reportedly €35-40M net / yr, so €15-18M net /yr for de Jong is not that unreasonable (especially as there was a bidding war with PSG/City at the time of his transfer). Add in deferred comp, loyalty bonus and tax and yes, €170m over the next 4 years sounds about right.

I believe Marca said they owe him about 88.7M over next 4 years (fixed salary plus loyalty bonus). And addons of about 20M if he stays through all those 4 years and Barca wins titles etc etc

I believe the higher tax in Spain is over 50%,so, if the numbers stated by marca are net, the gross will be around 170 million.

If that's correct, that's €17.5 - 20M a year gross, or about GBP 283k - 320k a week. That's a "normal" contract for a player of his stature, and if FDJ was on a "normal" contract Barca wouldn't bend over backwards to get rid of the guy.
Barca awarded stupid contracts to a lot of their players which got them in the current debacle. Don't they owe like €50m in deferred comp to Pique? You don't end up there by giving "normal" contracts.
I have a close family member who was a professional footballer, he went into management and was assistant at quite a large club and fell out with the newly appointed manager and wanted to leave after an altercation but his lawyers made him sit tight for several weeks until the club had no option but to pay him out of his contract.
Different circumstances, granted, but I suspect De jongs advisers are telling him the same thing, keep schtum, say the right things and you’ll get your money and perhaps the move.

I did work in a place before, was there about 4 years at this point, one guy wanted to leave after being there a year, had a job offer. Boss offered him a payrise and all of a sudden he stays for another and leaves anyway. I got offered another job, offered payrise to stay and did, payrise never materialised, got a big bill in and couldnt afford the extra £20 a week. Money wasnt the motivator for me it was more the acceptance I was wanted. Got the other job on less money and never looked back. Moral of the story, trust no one. I worked every single weekend for overtime, pushed for overtime and new jobs in different sites to help the company and still got treated poorly, only to find out one of the other guys got a payrise and was being paid it cash off the books. Fast forward 5 years and Im in a far better position than I would have been had I stayed there so Im grateful for that, FDJ will look back in 5 years and think the same, I can feel it.
