Brozovic is not a player who can pick up from defenders, he is a destroyer if anything, which is fine, but then you are asking one of McFred to be your play maker, or you need to buy another midfielder. Its certainly viable, but you would also need a better defender than maguire if you do.

ETH can do that with his teams, he can build around the players he has, but if we don't buy FDJ then we would need to go buy v different players to suit a different way of playing. We can barely get one signing done. Imagine we now turn our attention to Brozovic and we end up with him and Fred, are you confident that is much better than mcFred? So now we have to go get another player. I think this is why we are holding out with Barca, switching to plan B is not just a case of selecting another midfielder.

Wait what? Brozovic is a destroyer and can't be a playmaker? I'm not sure you've watched him play very often mate.

Let’s not forget that this could again be Barca and Spanish press trying to get us to cough up… if a reliable Chelsea source reports it, then and only then, we’ll know that they’re in for him.

If they’re really in, it’ll speed us up and we’ll still get him I think

Exactly. Bollocks do Chelsea want him, they've just brought back Gallagher and they're not just going to drop Jorginho or Kovacic for him. Would be a huge waste of money for them.
While I agree generally with the point, there is also a rumor that Jorginho could goto Juve as part of the De ligt deal and they would need a DM then.

But it's a far fetched one.

Imagine if we pretend to let him go to Chelsea so we can get Kante.
Everyone will go mental. Oh no we signed an old midfielder and let Frenkie go!
Right after we signed Kante, Frenkie will be seen wearing a blue shirt when he's about to fly to England - Oh it's official Frenkie to Chelsea let's go!
Then when he arrived, his shirt is actually holographic and as he walks it turns from blue to red.
Then he gives a big feck you to all the Chelsea fans waiting nearby before heading to Old Trafford to sign a contract.
Feck Chelsea they don't have money anyway.

Chelsea used to get their signings done quickly. If they are really interested and go sign him it will be done quickly. For us it will be like ripping of a band-aid fast instead of, if we dont sign him, this long and painful proces.
How long has the Sterling deal taken them? Feels like they’ve been doing that deal for around the same amount of time that United have been negotiating for de Jong.

I'd agree ordinarily with the idea that the Chelsea link is conjecture, but ultimately their new owner is a kid in a candy store with loads of cash and no football directors to stop him.

I'm still confident he'd pick United with ten Hag over Chelsea if it's a choice. More concerned about them just offering more than us and United not matching the bid.

I think the De Jong/Ten Hag relationship will be key in any other bids from any club.

it might prompt United to match a Chelsea offer if it came.

honestly though i think this is nonsense. Barca trying to squeeze a few more million out of United.

Chelsea have bigger issues at CB and an attacker. I think they are looking at a 150m outlay to fill these positions.

Yeah, like they've speedily sealed Kounde, De Ligt and Sterling.

Clearly Kounde was a target for the old regime. They have almost distanced themselves from him.

Actually, Sterling to Chelsea is far more advanced than De Jong to United, even though they were not linked with him from April.

While I agree generally with the point, there is also a rumor that Jorginho could goto Juve as part of the De ligt deal and they would need a DM then.

But it's a far fetched one.
Maybe, but in which case, they have to negotiate 2 deals prior for that to work.

Agreed, it seems very farfetched.

I repeat. They need two defenders and a striker. They aren’t spending that much in one window. Also another attacker if they don’t get Raphinha.
But they're about to get Sterling and they'll probably land De Ligt/ someone else at CB. They don't even need to commit more money to come up with a better deal, if they change the payment structure to a more front-loaded structure but offer the exact same amount to Barcelona as we have, its instantly a better deal because of Barcelona's desperate need for the cash ASAP.

All i'm saying is Chelsea being interested is not really far-fetched at all. Its a player that would improve a lot of teams including Chelsea's. Its fairly normal for them to be interested and quite frankly i'm surprised its taken this long for another club to be interested. De Jong is not just any midfielder.

Oh you mean when Peter Kenyon moved and took a list of our transfer targets?

Don’t think that’s quite the same as we didn’t formally go for those players as such. I’m looking at it from an open bidding war.
Yeah exactly. So since we became shit and splashed the cash to fix it basically no one?

It’s all coming from Spain at the moment so if it’s credible new information will come from the UK later on.

If not I’d suggest it’s being generated by Barca although I’ve no doubt they may well be offering him about in attempts to get a club to help pay him out.

It won’t matter much though if, as widely reported, the player has already promised Ten Hag.

Was never going to happen it it will drag on until the end of summer we need to move on.

If you can’t get a deal done within 2 months it’s time to feck it off.

All this ‘negotiating’ for a player who doesn’t want to join…absolute mess.

Aaah yes, and this won't be Barca leaking crap to the press to speed up United giving them what they want.

Some people are just pure gulliable

Anyone think it’s chelsea telling United if you don’t give us Ronaldo we will take de Jong ?

I think De Jong could be transformative for our team. However, there’s obviously a point where we need to be willing to walk away. Murtough is under huge pressure on this deal. I think, as fans, we can’t assess his whole regime on this one transfer (although it’s worrying we don’t yet have more through the door).

If Barca try to screw us and it just isn’t happening, I’d rather we don’t do anything crazy like pay another 20m or something. If we ultimately walk away, I don’t think it’s fair to see it as a Murtough failure. I just think Barca are shady. We may need to call their bluff or indicate a deadline to get the deal done. If terms are too ridiculous, we mustn’t acquiesce.

I just hope that, if this one falls through, most of the fans are thoughtful enough to not necessarily see it as a huge blunder by the club.

If this is a planted story to increase pressure on united to pay extra money then... It will be a great success is say
Half this thread will pay 100m, the other half have already run and hid under the bed
