Also we wouldn't be in the race for FdJ if it wasn't for Erik ten Hag, and the opportunity to sign a player of de Jong's immense quality in a position where we're poor, is a opportunity that must be grasped.
I also fully expect us to sign more players after de Jong.
I don't know what's going on with Nunez but he's got to have something special to get both Pool and Utd interested at such a huge transfer fee. Benfica just went into the saga straight up with a 100M demand for him even when Pool were not strongly linked - unusual with Portuguese clubs.
Maybe he really is the next big thing.
Yeah it's very concerning if the owners are involved in the day to day instead of leaving it to Arnold / Murtough. I really really hope their input is limited to the amount we can realistically spend this window rather than how it's actually spent.
Maybe they don't trust the new regime - the value of their asset is dropping and they have no idea what they can do to fix it.

It remains to be seen how things develop but I can't see us moving swiftly in the market if Joel Glazer maintains a similar stance. Getting deals done quickly and efficiently isn't really difficult for football men, if there isn't interference from the owners.

I don't think it's going to be de Jong and that's it for CM, we'll likely bring in another albeit someone further down the list as he'll have to be a cheaper alternative.
I think the fact that it's one big fee signing and that it, suggests signing Anthony or Nkunku is now out the window.
We'll likely get de Jong, Timber, cheap DM and that's our business done.

There were many reports even under Woody when our transfer negotiations took time because of the timezone differences between Europe and the US.
The bigger deals seem take time and Di Maria was signed with days remaining in the transfer window. So it does seem like what's being reported about Joel Glazer wanting to sign players later in the window, may actually be true due to the potential price difference.
Maguire and Wan Bissaka were signed late in the window as well. We also completed the Bruno deal late in January, January 30th to be precise. It seems like a strategy that hasn't been the most effective.

But surely things have changed materially since then. I am not denying Joel Glazer wants to ratify deals but we have apparently overhauled the process. There must be some better autonomy in the process to enable deals to be done earlier.
I can see Joel Glazer wanting to four eyes a Darwin deal but not say, Timbers?

Exactly, also the only reason we have chance is because of ETH, not because we aren't big club but we usually hire managers who can't use players like him.

We've had different situations in different summers. In LVG's first summer we got Herrera and Shaw early, and were then probably affected by LVG's late arrival, his desire to examine the squad and our terrible start to the season - and we ended up getting FOUR players very late on, including Di Maria. In his second summer we got several players rather early and only Martial late. Mourinho got most of his signings early. Also, AWB was signed in early July, it was hardly late.
If the opportunity to sign a player of Frenkie de Jong's quality is on the table, then I believe we should always make a concerted effort to sign such a player.
And we also now have a head coach who knows the player well, and the player has proven in the past that he enhances the method of play which ten Hag implements. And the method of play has been on display in the champions league.
Signing a player of this profile actually fits with the way the coach wants to play and I can't fathom why anyone would be against signing him considering our midfield is a weak point. FdJ has the potential to be among the very best midfielders in the game.

It definitely hinders preparation and tbh with you we have form for that. And it's been reported several times about deals being slow due to going back and forth with Florida.

He is probably the player i would sign to fix that. If we had signed striker without investing in midfield then i would worry. This is why i didnt mind United trying to convince him from the start

If we get Frenkie in early I would be happy and in no rush to get anyone else in immediately.

This may be a little overly cynical, but I wonder if fan engagement numbers, or whatever they're calling it, played a part in that strategy. More traffic when all the news outlets are all over the run up to deadlines day and all that.
We seem to have been paying the quoted price in the end anyway.

This is the part I was talking about. There were some rumours from less reliable source that we dont have budget for both Nunez and FDJ. I could be completely wrong but this mention by Laurie made me think that Joel definitely had some influence on not getting either deal over the line.
Mind you we may go and buy some other striker for huge amount of money and my assumption could be completely wrong. But i believe we will go for a young upcoming striker for this season if budget constraints are true
This transfer window will be a true litmus test for Arnold and Murtough. We will see if they can walk the walk.
