The last remaining excitement of this thread reaching 2000 seems far away but we are one false rumour of a last day push to do it. Come on muppets believe.

Deal doesn't need to happen this window. De Jong's missus clearly need some convincing. Give it some time for the entourage to change her mind.

The looming deadline doesn’t mean anything for Frenkie though. Why would he suddenly cave in now when he hasn’t flinched for months?

My guess would be that after the deadline has passed, he really has no other options. He can continue as is, on his current contract and play a bit part role, here and there, or he can reduce his wages and be back in favour again. He goes from holding all the card to holding none of them to be honest

For us to have any chance of signing him, I think barca need to generate funds to pay off de Jong. Possibly why Chelsea are trying to lower their fee for Aubameyang with Alonso as a make weight. They don't want to pay more for Auba and potentially strengthen us.

Even if we miss out on de Jong and get Depay, I think it would be an important deal for us to cover a few attacking positions.

Well aren't you just a lovely cheerful chap. Such insightful posts too
What is best in life?

To crush the muppets. See them driven before you. And to hear the lamentations of their women.

But in all seriousness, this thread is an unreal psych class on hysteria. Not even a whiff of him coming or wanting to come and the thread has whipped itself into hysteria and still feeding off of scraps. It's insane.

I'd love it if he came, I really would but I have to say, seeing reality dawn on the muppets is just as exciting.

I think it has been turned into ‘just a bit of fun’ by people who were in fact deadly serious, perhaps as a way to climb down without looking foolish!
I mean it doesn't matter either way to be honest it's just a thread on an internet forum, doesn't affect anyone.

Not at all. I've been confident the whole way through, and if he doesn't come then i won't feel or look foolish at all. As a club, we've done nothing wrong at all. We must have had some assurances that he wanted to come, but other things were at play that stopped it (wages, partner, family etc). All things outside of our control

You've got us bang to rights! Handcuffs on! We were caught attempting an irony-laden climbdown. Oh, wait, this just in... the transfer window isn't shut, and it's still on! As you were!

If he's given us assurances, you can count family and partner out of it. He would have known about that prior to assurances.

As for wages, yes, that's the likely hold up but that's something United could cover and make an offer to cover too. I don't believe it's as big a stumbling block as folk say.

Slightly off topic but i just saw this on a rival forum (so take it with a pinch of salt) -

"When we heard Manchester United were interested we were hoping to get around €20-€25million for Fred as he had had such a bad season.”

“Two days later, we received a official faxed bid of €60million from United, the room erupted into laughter. I told my assistant to fax back asking for €64million. Next morning a new bid arrived of €64million."

“I remember thinking had the World gone crazy, we had better players in our youth team. I ordered my assistant to open a bottle of champagne, it felt like we had won the Lottery.”

—Paulo Fonseca (Shakhtar Donestk manager)

If that is true then no wonder we have acted like buffoons in the transfer window in recent years.
