What does “no bottomless pit” mean? You mean are funds are not unlimited? SHAMBLES! Next you’ll be telling me this De Jong guy doesn’t really want to come here… SHAMBLES, I TELL YOU!
We’re competing against teams with an effectively bottomless pit in City and Newcastle so this is actually kind of a problem.

Don’t see how this can still happen if we’re getting Antony. Think we go for Antony this window and then all out for de Jong next season when we get back into the CL.
‘We can do things in the market that others can only dream of’

I don't think anyone would be expecting any different, i.e. if we were to sign Antony and de Jong I don't think people would be expecting as big an outlay next summer. But it would make perfect sense to do it now as it will help us qualify for top 4, it will immediately improve ETH's ability to transform the team's style of play, and it will thereby make the team better, raising the overall value of the team which may help next summer if we're in a stronger position to sell, as oppose to finishing way down the table again with a goal difference of zero.

Buying him now and decreasing the budget for next summer would be sensible long-term planning.

Much as I disagree with United ever being ‘short of money’ for transfers given the amount taken out by our owners, and the amount they should fecking well put in from their own wallets, if they were to say ‘ok we’ll get De Jong and Anthony, but next summer’s budget is max c£40-50m’ , I’d actually be ok with that. Liverpool have basically worked with that scenario to cut their cloth over recent years to good effect.

Yes but like sky sports have already said… we just like any other club have a budget. Can’t just go spending ridiculous amounts of money in one single window. Especially when we’ve made nothing on sales. We very rarely make money on sales these days. We find it hard to bring in money because no one wants our players or they can’t afford them because of the ridiculous wages we’ve given them.

I'd spend next seasons budget on FDJ now and rely on free transfers next season if given the choice. Just cant see that happening, the club won't risk it and I still don't think he wants to come anyway.

I personally don't think it happens but I don't believe for one second if FDJ tomorrow decided to leave Barcelona we wouldn't find the money to sign him regardless of Antony(if he's signed) or Casemiro even if it means using future summer's budget

Yeah feel exactly the same way

Skysports know literally nothing about United’s budget. Obviously every club has a budget but we don’t have a clue what ours is - remember you don’t pay the money all upfront on these transfers so there might be a view that we have to get CL football this season and so we’re going for it but our next couple of windows will be quiet.

That did sound like an opinion to be fair, wasn't like a scoop he was releasing.
Yeah, no one waits until a podcast to release that kind of news. It's tweeted instantly for fear of someone else stealing their glory. I don't think any of the usual suspects really know what de Jong is thinking at this point.

You’re both right probably, but I was struck by the difference in tone of the message. He has always been 50/50 or 60/40 coming to United, but for him to flat come out and say ‘he never wanted to come’ seems a real change to the narrative.

Are you good folk going to be genuinely gutted when FdJ doesn't arrive at OT or do you know deep down that it isn't happening?

Personally, I believe that when we signed Casemiro the move for FdJ was over.

I'm more gutted for Erik who wanted this deal for 3 months and had especially planned his tactics around him.

Can't see them selling with only a week left in the window though. Shame because think he and Casemiro could have worked well.

Yeah it really would, so if Mitten says he believes De Jong never had any intention of coming then why not move on to Casemiro right at the start

I don't buy the idea that he never wanted the move. It's such a strange stance to take now. If he'd flat out rejected us, it would have come out straight after the bid was accepted that we'd moved on to other targets. The usual suspects just aren't in the loop this summer and most of what they've said has been sitting on the fence, for fear of guessing wrong

It would be a perfect midfield.

I see people blaming the board ect... But I'm not sure what else they could do. FdJ just doesn't want to move to us, it appears that simple. Shame though

Wonder who was the most in the loop over this

We could apportion blame to players for not getting Champions League Football, that has made his decision easier

If it is the case that FDJ never wanted to come, then someone should have stepped in earlier to say we can't spend all summer on this. I don't know who you would blame for that. Clearly United felt they could do a deal with Barcelona, but what made them think that FDJ wanted to come? Did Ten Hag Speak with him or someone at Utd speak with his agent?

This is the part that doesn't make any sense to me. For them to spend most of the window pursuing De Jong either they had some kind of signal from the player's camp that an agreement could happen or they chased it with no clue as to what De Jong wanted. The former should have had a quicker deadline, the latter would be supremely naive and daft.

In fairness to Mitten hes always towed the line that de Jong wasnt interested in moving (to United). I think there was one week where he said he felt confident but apart from that he was always doom and gloom on the likelihood of the deal.

Don't need Mitten to tell us what we already know, if he wanted to come here he would have been here by now. Maybe next summer once we get Champions League and Barce have filed for bankruptcy we will see him. Im hoping for a miracle on deadline day but maybe Barce don't need to sell him after all.

Smacks of 2 years ago when we chased Sancho all summer even though Dortmund had set a deadline for the deal to be done by in July I think and for one reason or another the club thought they were lying when in fact they were telling the truth. Sounds crazily amateur when you think about it. I dont know maybe theres a (false) arrogance about United in the way they think they can do business? Whatever it is they fecked it again. It is absolutely, and I wont say the word, but it starts with E and rhymes with Tembarrassing.

Frenkie not wanting to leave Barcelona doesn't necessarily mean that he didn't want to join Utd. Now I'm not saying that he did want to join either, it's just that I think some people see FdJ trying to stay at Barca and think "Oh, Frenkie obviously rejected Utd, he clearly didn't want to come" whereas I think it's more of a case "Oh, Frenkie wants to stay at Barca, he'd be ok with joining Utd if he left Barca but Barca are his dream club, he has a contract with them that they have to honour, why would he leave?"
