The issue with de Jong appears to be his reluctance to leave Barcelona, no matter how shabbily they treat him. His feelings might change by September 1, but the point here is that the cards are all in Frenkie's hands and it's unlikely that an improved bid for the transfer fee itself would impact his decision in any way.

His reluctance is why this hasnt ever caught fire

IF United agreed to partially cover his wages, this kid is a fecking idiot.

Barca are pure scum. Some sort of a compromise should have been made.

If no progress is made, I hope we don't go for him again. Really can't be dealing with a Di Maria situation.

I was always adamant he was likely to stay at Barca but now that it's really happening, it is really scummy how Ten Hag has been strung along.

"enough encouragement"

Yeah IF he really strung Erik along can get stuffed

Only way this sparks again now is selling Maguire & Ronaldo along with Barca reaching a compromise on wages, safe to say neither of those things will happen

Why? I don't really think that's necessary, if we could get him we would, im sure Eric has asked specifically for him and him only to be a must and I think the management is in agreement with him on that.

Also I doubt we'd listen to any offers for Harry, varane is injury prone and we're already light in that department with the departure of baily.

This transfer is not over just yet..

Remember this transfer is dependent on Bernardo Silva, imo. If there is progress, we will likely see Barca come to an agreement on the deferred wages and we will see if that truly is the hold up.

I can't post tweets but:

Pep Guardiola: "There are 7 days left for the transfer market to close. That being said, Bernardo really likes Barcelona..."

Pep Guardiola: "I'm not the one to tell Barça that they can't go for Bernardo Silva."

Interesting.

I have a strange feeling when I woke up in bed today that we will sign him.

I really like FDJ and I can’t help but feel that a lot of people who are now saying ‘Good riddance, he’s terrible anyways’ come off as the lad who’s been turned down by the lady after asking for a dance.

Truly, the point of this rebuild was to get players in who want to play for ETH and United. Casemiro jumped at the chance. Malacia and Martinez as well. I don’t blame FDJ for demanding his wages, but I’m also confident that if that was the sole issue, Barca and United would have come to some compromise and taken care of that. FDJ just isn’t interested, and that’s okay. But I’m not going to cry over someone who has no interest in being here.

Hoping for the best still, but also fine moving on to Antony and another cheap player (and no, it’s not possible to sign Antony and FDJ this window. If one signs, the other won’t. That’s common sense)

Really wanted him at Utd, would have complimented Casemiro so well. Shame that he is contracted with Barcelona and their problems.

I've given up hope. But then again here I am checking this thread.

Honestly we should hear news within 2-3 days if it has legs.

Frenkie will need to leave so Barca can sign Bernado Silva. FDJ won't be a deadline day signing because of that, FDJ needs to sign to get the money to then pay Bernado within FFP regulations.

I think if there's nothing within 72 hours it's dead.

He'll pair up well with Casemiro. A good keeper and a striker we may even be set. But de Jong, January surely?

By January I am sure the urgency to register players will be gone. There will be more levers to pull before the end of this window.

Imagine Liverpool getting De Jong and still ending out of top 4... This is Klopp's 7th season there, the magical number of relegation battling.
the sad fact is, once Liverpool start winning they are more likely to sty on a winning/not losing run than us. I honestly can't remember our last winning run

This one feels over. Missing out on De Jong really feels like we will lack that missing piece this season.

I don't see us getting both Antony and De Jong in one window, given the outlay with Casemiro & Martinez already. Unless of course Maguire gets sold to Chelsea for 60m.

It's this one I feel sorry for:
