Imagine the scenes as we get this guy and he ends up getting benched by Fred

Fred is a good player, gets unfair stick on here. He’d look a different player with Casemiro next to him too - he can push further up field - where his actual position is

If Frenkie signs all we need is a RB & a goalkeeper!

Antony
Gakpo
FDJ
Casemiro
Eriksen
Martinez
Malacia

best window ever?

Come on there simply isn't a chance in hell we have this sort of window. It's nice to dream and I'd love nothing more, but this is wishful thinking. I'd be amazed if we make more than one more signing this window

Barcelona order transfer meeting in last-ditch attempt to sell Frenkie de Jong to Man Utd
Barcelona are now desperate to sell Frenkie de Jong and five other first-team squad players as they scramble to raise funds before the end of the transfer window

The most interesting bit from the article:

Ten Hag recently instructed United to remain patient on a deal after holding fresh talks with the player but Premier League rivals Chelsea are believed to be becoming increasingly confident of launching a late move for the midfield star.

So our manager had a talk with the guy and then went and told the board to stay patient. Sounds like he's getting encouraged by Frenkie to me.

These signings simply will not happen without the universal power generated by the muppetry that this thread generates into the transfer cosmos. You all have a duty to adhere to.

Think that has always been the case, ETH has been the conduit. Otherwise, no sane person like Arnold or Murtough would allow themselves to put themselves up for such potential humiliation. I bet they badger ETH always every day.

Now we’ve actually got a proper DM, how would he work alongside De Jong if we got him? I assumed De Jong was a bit of a hybrid - an 8 who would take the ball from the back 4 and move up the pitch. Do we even need both, or would another type of midfielder be better? Someone a bit more attack minded?

De Jong plays fine with Koopmeiners for Holland and, though people will argue blind it wasn't so, at Ajax Schone did the defensive dirty work and let De Jong do his thing.

De Jong could play fine with Casemiro. Will he? Not sure. De Jong started last night for Barcelona and, from all reports, he does not want to leave. Even if United somehow find an extra £100m down the back of the sofa.

Im a bit worried about what we are doing right now. Its unsustainable to sign Sancho and Varane last year on about 300k a week each (+Ronnie but he could be off yet), then sign Casemiro on about 300k a week plus de Jong on I would guess upwards of 400k a week. If we dont look out we could end up another Barcelona in absolute shit.
We let go of Pogba, Matic, Cavani, Lingard, Mata and potentially AWB and Greenwood which would accumulate to some serious wages off the books.

I’d say thats over £1m a week of wages off the books.

Ok thanks. I actually don’t think we’re serious about this, I think we’re prepared to walk away now and Barcelona are doing their best to force it through. We got Casemiro done in record time, I think we ran out of patience and told them to go feck themselves.

Indeed, and if Ronaldo goes that increases to £1.4m a week.

Since Casemiro isn't really a playmaker and really benefited from Modric and Kroos around him, and since FDJ isn't an anchor/shield/destroyer type, they would both benefit from each other's presence, I'd reckon.

Schone was defensively horrible, but he was disciplined and intelligent enough in his positioning to block some of the passing lanes and slow down oppositions that way. Add to that the fact he was pretty trustworthy on the ball too, he balanced out Frenkie's dynamic nature. Casemiro isn't as technical as Schone, but he is technical enough and I think would make for a great balance to someone like De Jong. Plus, he is better than McTominay, but with one of McFred next to him, I don't think play from the back would improve that much... Maybe this hands us the option of getting Eriksen in deeper, to take that playmaker burden off the players put in DM/CM right now, but otherwise you really miss someone like Frenkie or another playmaker to allow Casemiro to do what he does best, too.

And Frenkie is excellent next to Koopmeiners, but Koopmeiners himself really needs to get over his nerves to be fine next to Frenkie, notlol. He is much better at Atalante than he is at the Dutch NT.

Casemiro is good enough to adapt his position based on what de Jong does. He can both cut passing lanes and win the ball effectively in the middle of the park and further up. He is also technically skilled enough to provide a release should the opposition pressure de Jong too much.

There is nothing inherently difficult about those two playing together - one likes to tackle, defend the team and position himself in support, provide safety and to stop attacks before they get going, while the other likes to pick the ball up from defenders, drive it forwards, make himself available and constantly look for passing opportunities.

de Jong's main strength is his playmaking ability and his ability to progress the ball up the pitch, his defensive ability is only decent. Casemiro on the other hand has his strength in the defensive work, and not in playmaking ability, but is a decent enough passer that it doesn't become a problem. Given their widely different skillsets it should be more than possible to play them together.

That is, if we land de Jong.

Ok that sounds promising, I didn’t really know De Jong was that much of a playmaker. I assumed Eriksen or Bruno would be doing all the heavy lifting creatively. I guess it’s no different really to Scholes who was excellent alongside Carrick.

Not sure they are fake?

Van der Kraan has said we are going to go in again and he’s been reliable. The Mirror has said something similar today with the EtH addition.

Yep that's true, but the extra spice of us travelling to Barca to do the deal he never said. Logically we will be doing that, but I'd rather they just stick to what he actually said.

Let's do this. All in.

We'll be their 5th, 6th and 7th lever. Need money? Just call us anytime and we'll send 200 million their way, interest free for 30 years

Fairs, Casemiro - FDJ - Bruno/Eriksen would be quite filthy...

Just hard to get dragged back into this circus saga  :wenger:

Maybe the extra money will make all the difference

Always maintained he’s ours and nothing has changed. Screams deadline day 10 pm signing, but it’s happening.
