The irony of the FDJ saga is that we conceded todays first goal because of the very guy he’s going to replace trying to do the very thing FDJ does best. McTominay trying to drive forward with the ball at his feet before completely losing control of it and it leading to a counter attack goal.

Tbh, the only thing that gives me hope is that it would be absolutely crazy if ETH hasn’t spoken to FDJ this week and most certainly after this game and said “Mate, wtf is going on? Are you coming or what, you swanky blonde Dutch sausage!” I can only believe he’s been given some kind of strong assurance after the shit hit the fan today.

This transfer saga should be renamed "The Red Herring"

Wtf, how have I got to 500 posts in this thread! This is as a part time muppet as well. Brings back memories of 2019 when I was chief muppet bellend in the Sancho thread.

Yeah keep it in your pants Chief. No one likes a show off.

This simply cannot be true. Surely we have someone as a backup? To spend all summer chasing de Jong, to not get him and then sign no one in that position would be an outrage.

Seems to be the case that our targets are coming directly from ETH which imo is a bad sign, seem very limited because of course they are he isn't a scout.

So what are we employing a director of football for if he ultimately isn't actually director of football?.

2 things;

1. This isn't happening.
2. If it does, its still not enough.

Just highlights the lack of Sporting Director again doesn't it. Either ETH vetoed every single player the club have scouted over the last few years or the club just haven't scouted anyone over the last few years Whichever is the answer it highlights a massive problem

Our biggest problem this summer has been an inability to get players through the door and convince them of joining us, as well as selling players.

Lautaro Martinez was reportedly a target, Sesko is up in the air, we were too late for Antony, Timber rejected us, no one knows what the feck is going on with de Jong, Ronaldo hasn't managed to get any clubs to come for him, we can't seem to sell AWB, or anyone really.

We should have had

Lautaro
Sancho - Bruno - Antony
de Jong - Fred
Malacia - Martinez - Maguire - Timber
De Gea

That was "the plan". It was a good plan, not great, but good. What seem to have happened is that we failed at executing the plan and seemingly couldn't get secondary targets for whatever reason - not being able to offload anyone hasn't been good - the fact that we are barking up Arnautovic's tree all but confirms that we are way down on our list of priority targets.

Has any one considered that, in being overly deferential to Ten Hag, and not wanting to upset his relationship with him, could have given him bad signals? Like “I would LOVE to play for you again… if I couldn’t play at Barca there’s no one else I’d want to play for” kind of thing. But on the flip side he never really considered not playing for Barca or what he would really do if Barca forced him to move.

Yes, but that would mean they only spoke once through this whole saga - which frankly seems far-fetched.

He's the biggest improvement we can make, though. I believe he will be a game changer if he joins.
Yeah, but he's not gonna.

When was the last time we had a saga like this and the player actually ended up here?

Berbatov maybe? (Nowhere near the level of this saga).

This is a rerun of the Fabregas saga.

Alexis when it looked like he was joining City?

It's also possible ten Hag's relationship with him is overstated - as that is realistically the only thing United have to seduce him at this moment in time (maybe 450k pw in wages also but as said before, I don't think this is a player obsessed with money). I think EtH backed himself to persuade Frenkie (with Barca pressure coming from the other side, we want him gone so you can open talks with him etc) but it seems Frenkie just has no intention of leaving. Even now, it has been reported his agent is looking to move him and he has conflict with his agent about it.

Someone referred to Eriksen as a bloke that died last year, guys what is actually going on?

What sort of meltdown is this?

He’s literally refusing to take a pay cut under immense pressure. He had his pants pulled down, his head flushed and his shoes shat in and he’s still standing firm.

According to people on here though, that is owed money for the service he did during the pandemic so it's hardly a player who only thinks of the money, he's well within his rights.

This is like what clubs do when selling an average player, they mention a big club is interested to convince a smaller club to complete the deal.

Here we are, using De Jong's name to try and convince the world that Manchester United are capable of signing players of his quality. The truth is we can't, but maybe we'll trick other players into coming to us by pretending we're not a Europa League club.

I think that stance is more his agent trying to right the feck up of a deferral he had Frenkie sign in the first place. Insane that it seemingly didn’t have a ‘what happens if I leave or you try to sell me’ clause in it.

Blind homerism much?

“People on here”? Are you disputing this as established fact?

So he’s not refusing to take a pay cut?

Even if we get De Jong, we clearly still need another midfielder. Someone in the shape of N'Golo Kanté but with more years in the tank. De Jong is not a natural defensive midfielder. He's a brilliant player of his type, but we would still need a better screen in front of the defence to allow De Jong/Fernandes/Eriksen a platform. Crikey, when you actually mention all those players in the same sentence and imagine a quality DM backing them up, it sounds great.

We witnessed the player first hand today. He was incredible, I had the same feeling watching him as I did Kante at Leicester. A must sign now for me.
