This is the only thing that gives me slight hope that the Chelsea "interest" is a ruse. Notice its now growing in intensity when the news has emerged that Barcelona can't register any of their new signings

If Chelsea get Fofana and FDJ, their spend this window would be over 300 million.

Chelsea have new owners that are looking to spend big this summer. They are going for it. Them spending 80m on Fofana and another 70m on De Jong is absolutely possible. May not happen every summer, but they have been desperate this summer for statement signings.
Possible but very very unlikely. Then how much do they spend on getting a striker? They need a forward player more than a midfielder. Fofana will likely be signed for £80m or so i bet. They're not going to go out and spend another 85m on de Jong then god knows how much on a forward are they? It's just not feasible

ETH, Murtough and Arnold will have serious questions to answer if he ends up at Chelsea.
I think it's unthinkable we have chased him this long without knowing what his desires are.

Massively so. It would be a disaster of a first summer for a new manager and regime that was meant to be a fresh start.

And when you do sign him, I don't wanna hear any "he chose us over Chelsea" horseshit from anyone!

you’re just upset that he will choose the righteous, og yank dollars, not brash new yank spondoolies.

Yet it looks like exactly what they’re going to do.

We can’t compete with that with our owners, they’re just not that bothered.

Chelsea are also going in stupidly hard for Fofana and they need a striker too. I don't think de Jong is a priority to them and the media are exaggerating it big time based on what Barca are saying.

If Unites believed he was going to Chelsea as a fact, they won't stay involved, it would make no sense. We'd run, brief and that's it
Boehly hasn't a breeze what he's doing. He's playing real life football manager, which seems incredibly fun for him, but there's no rhyme nor reason for half of his targets. He's just saying "well if United/Barca/Liverpool want that player, so do we". They have a midfield United would dream of and he wants to blow a fair amount of his war chest on a player who while being incredibly valuable for a team like United, would only provide marginal improvements for Chelsea. Think they will fall out of the top four this season and Tuchel will lose his job at some point although not sure if we will be strong enough to capitalise on this if we don't get Frenkie and another forward.

Ornstein? Romero?

Ornstein has tremendous credibility within the game and Romero is incredibly close to the Barca hierarchy.

Ornstein has zero reason to lie or look for RTs.

I just think you're in denial because you don't want to be hurt like earlier this summer.
Ummmmm why would Duffer be in denial? He supports Chelsea? There is no way he'd be hurt haha.

Yes these guys have great credibility in the game, but they can also fall to false information that the clubs want out there. You don't honestly think everything a club wants out there is the absolute truth do you?

I'd say it isn't a great situation, but how do you know a player is "liable" to change his mind? As asked previously, are the club meant to be psychic?

They identified a prime target and went for it, I can't fault them for trying that. I would wonder why they didn't set an earlier deadline on getting it done, but if they feel De Jong is a unique opportunity then I can see why they would pursue it to the end.

Of course you don't know for sure if they are liable to change their mind. But the line all summer from this transfer window from reputable sources has been that his wish is to stay at Barcelona and his salary situation. Now Chelsea interest is more concrete, all of a sudden he is now open to moving? It doesn't take a genius to read between the lines and United should have set a deadline for the transfer or at the very least, have a contingency plan ready, not consistently brief how relaxed and confident we are that it will happen.

You're right that it isn't a great situation. It's a total and utter disaster.

We have already said it will be De Jong or no one. It that the right decision? Probably not but that will be on the manager I agree. This does however justify chasing the player until it is absolutely off the cards if that is their thinking.

"Zero reason to look for retweets"? Come on.

And I don't want to "be hurt"? I'm a middle aged man, the last time I was hurt about Chelsea not signing someone was in the mid 90s and we were linked to Matt Le Tissier! I barely know what position this dude plays.

Serious questions need to be asked if we have wasted our entire summer courting after one guy for Chelsea to swoop in in August and get it done just like that. What kind of indication have the club had that FDJ would want to leave? Because that is legitimately the ONLY reason they would have held out for so long. If that is at ETH's request, then he also needs to answer for that serious miscalculation. I doubt FDJ would have sold us up the river like that, so that only leaves one possible explanation. Sheer incompetence!

Ralf was right about the team and the club structure. The people at the top just don't want to make the changes necessary to move the club forward.

That's all this club is now. Jobs for mates and a profit first, football second mentality.

This isn't Manchester United. Its a hollow shell of its former self :(
People were glad to see the back of Ralf but he was desperately needed upstairs to avoid nonsense like this where manager has all the power to call shots. Isn’t that we were trying to get away from?

They are not going after any expensive forward at the moment. Most of their links are for Aubameyang, Ronaldo and Bellotti I think. And they could pay for them easily if Werner goes out

We’ll see once the Frenkie mess is resolved won’t we?
But you said we haven’t strengthened our midfield, we have.
We haven’t strengthened our deep midfield so far, absolutely. But don’t make the mistake of thinking Ten Hag wants a specialist DM.
Any midfield will do as long as it massive improves us and the way we play. I say specialist DM as we haven’t 1 DM in the team which is stopping us from playing a natural 4-3-3… city and Liverpool both have DM to protect there defence which allows the other mids to help out in attack. I know we’re playing Fred quite deep at the minute but he shouldn’t be the long term solution.

Ten Hag has already said if we don’t get him then we make our own. I’ve been against this for a long time but why wouldn’t United wait and see if this didn’t interfere with other transfers?
Muppets getting overly invested isn’t really United fault
In the main I agree.
Can't get my head around the "make our own" stance as a fall back scenario: how long would this take, and where is this option going to be found? No candidates have presented themselves thus far, who aren't at least two loans away from realizing even their PL potential. And as the clock ticks down lets just hope that the body of incomings ( whatever that constitutes? ) can be done in quick succession whether FDJ is the king-making transfer or not.

This is what i mean... why are we still saying stuff like that if he wants to go to Chelsea? I just don't get it.

IF he doesn't want to come, we need to just admit we're done and walk away. The fact we're not just makes this whole thing so confusing

Why are you so sure Chelsea aren't in for him?

If he's ready to depart Barcelona a week or so after Chelsea's interest became concrete, while having kept Utd hanging for the best part of a couple of months, then you know where he's headed. It's not 50/50 anymore.
That isn't the case though is it, nothing to do with Chelsea's name cropping up.
They can't register players, economic levers haven't helped and they have until next friday to register players.
FDJ has stood his ground because he won't take another pay cut and shithouse Barcelona are running out of time.

In the same article he says ETH is happy to carry on without further signings. So it's probably just a case of, if it happens then great. Otherwise we'll go with what we've got.

I don't know anything about this guy. If Chelsea are interested, long term Jorginho replacement?
Immediate Jorgihno replacement for me. The talk that the negative way Jorgihno often plays annoys Tuchel is what makes this a possibility to me. De Jong can give you the technical nous and defensive capability like Jorgihno or better, but also can create and link up going forward in a way Jorgihno doesn’t.

Who knows what will actually happen, but I could see it actually being an excellent fit.

Generally speaking people think we would need to move on from either Jorgihno or Kante soon anyway, so this would just mean keeping Kante for me and allow Jorginho to move on to Juve or somewhere else.

I see Conor as a more forward player in our current system, so that would give us Kante, De Jong, Kovacic, Carney in the middle.

If it doesn’t amount to anything, Kante , Jorgihno, Kovacic, Carney is t exactly a bad spot.

Not really reliable. Whilst a bunch of Tier 1's are saying Chelsea is looking increasingly likely. Maybe this is to speed up United because Barca need the transfer to be wrapped up next week, or maybe the T1's are just right.

I'm just glad it sounds like it will be over next week. There should definitely be more discussion though about Chelsea's spending this window. Absolutely ludicrous and is going to contribute as much to inflating the market as any recent transfer.

It's not the best source to be fair, and I see know reason to believe that this info comes directly from us, rather some speculation on the journalists part
