Clear as day we have been the backup plan all along and he was waiting for some CL club to come in.
Murtogh got played like a damn fiddle.
What a shitshow.
Must we start every manager's reign with a monumental blunder?

But surely if someone at the very very very very top of United is leaking to people that de Jong wants Chelsea, then why aren't the board putting a stop to it? Surely if he wants to go to Chelsea not even ten Hag could change his mind, and it would make no sense to carry on. For us to still be in either means that he's not dead set on going to Chelsea and Harry is either lying or has been fed bad info, or we're going to to brief later on that the wage issue just couldn't be sorted and Chelsea have agreed to pay it all off, something we didn't want to do as we felt it wasn't our responsibility.
My opinion is that 'Arry is probably exaggerating rather than outright lying. His person at the "very very very top of United" (is that enough verys?) probably isn't as involved in the deal as Redknapp is making out, and this person's statement probably wasn't as concrete as he's making it sound.

I have little doubt that Redknapp has connections with people fairly high up at United but I am somewhat dubious that he's getting the inside track on any of our transfer dealings.

“We want Frenkie! We are working on it.” - Ten Hag at the press conference just now. It’s still on. Hold the line.

The annoying thing about this now is that it’s becoming quite toxic. If it hasn’t already, it’s overshadowing (along with Ronaldo) the start to a new campaign which should be mostly positive with all the changes that have happened.

The only way to redeem this now is to seal two transfers in the next week or so and draw a line under everything.

I thought he was responding sarcastically as in - we want Frenkie?

Your optimism in the face of certain doom is admirable.

Anyway, whether we get him or not wasn't my point at all, it's where the blame lays if it goes tits up.

Murtough tried to play chicken with barca to save 17m, thinking they were desperate.
I don’t blame him. It’s a scummy move by Barca to move their bad calls onto the buyer to pay up.
murtough is between a rock and a hard place, damned if he does and damned if he doesn’t

Thought he said it was 50/50?
He said he prefers Chelsea but it’s 50-50.
If we both offer the same deal he will choose them is what he’s alluding to. As far as I know they haven’t offered anything yet.

Thats my guess too. There is no way we'd continue with something that was absolutely impossbile to conclude. I just can't understand why we'd even bother.

Us signing De Jong would be the equivalent of City going out and spending big on another attacking midfielder despite already having De Bruyne, Mahrez, Foden, Bernardo, and Grealish. It’s just nonsensical without us selling off 3-4 midfielders.

This is why I don’t believe these links no matter how many sources confirm our interest.

Agreed. Only thing I can think of is if its already been decided internally that one of/both Kante and Jorginho's contracts will not be renewed and we want a successor in now rather than waiting until next summer. They might have seen the situation with the CBs leaving this summer and leaving us scrambling around panicking looking for multiple players, a situation they might want to avoid going forward.

We could also see one of Kante/Jorginho leave this window but I would've thought that would be done first before pursuing anyone. We'll see I guess.

United can't legally pay an additional 17 m for Barca to use it to pay his wages.
This keeps getting repeated without any proof and despite it not making the slightest bit of sense. There's nothing stopping us or Chelsea from giving De Jong a big signing-on fee, for example.

ETH insisting on only De Jong and not examining other players as alternatives would be so utterly idiotic and amateurish, that I'm not ready to believe it. No manager (that's not daft) operates that way.
Why is it a shock?

He keeps repeating "we want the right player and not just any player".

How many links have we had to another CM?

He has specific targets in place - Martinez, Malacia and Eriksen being particular targets. De Jong is a specific target.

Antony was one specific target and now he's after Ziyech - another one of his Ajax lads.

Personally if his whole decision is based on location then he’s no great loss.
Location, CL, current squad quality and who knows what state we will be in, in the near future.

I think it’s more than just location. I also think Manchester as a city is underrated.

You and many others in this thread have been led on a merry chase.

He’s said he prefers London over Manchester from the start, but if Manchester is his only option then Manchester it is

If he is serious about his money, living in London will take a bigger chunk out of his wages. Manchester is 31% cheaper to live in than in London.

Its not all rosy in London.

Shouldn't need journos or pundits to tell you that any top level footballer will prefer Chelsea to United this summer, assuming equal deals are on the table. They've been a much better run club the last decade, are in the CL and have the London advantage.

If we don't like that then next time we appoint a shithouse CEO don't let them hang around for 10 years. Next time we hire a no mark to manage us dont give them 3 years to drag us down.

Thought he said it was 50/50?
He said 50/50 but also that he heard Frenkie prefers London and Chelsea with CL football. But 50/50 because Chelsea don't actually have transfer plans and are just going after a player that another big club wants, and nobody can spend endlessly, and they have other positions to address that it's not logical to spend so much on Frenkie for them essentially.

Well if we end up with FDJ going to Chelsea, it will be on ETH (not the board) - he is the one who has insisted on us chasing him all summer instead of getting someone else, and he is the one who knows the player. And it will make him look a bit stupid to be quite honest.
Partially correct.

The board should have sealed the deal or sussed out De Jong's interest.

However, same with his Antony pursuit. Who are our alternatives? Apparently Ziyech for heaven's sake.

The fact we've gone after De Jong, who is in constant comms with Ten Hag, and he doesn't come after so many months of trying to nail his transfer is tragic.

Well if thats true, and United know that and are still staying and putting out briefs that they're still confident, then they can expect and deserve all the backlash they get when he goes to Chelsea.

It makes no sense for us to be sticking around if they know for a fact he wants to go to Chelsea. If he truly does, then you can expect us to be out of the race pretty soon then.
Why would Harry Redknapp say that he has spoke to someone at top in Utd, when he hasn't. Are you surprised though its come from someone at the club? With the way we have been acting as a football club, the people within the club brief each other as to who they have spoken to, not a chance, it's blind leading the partially sighted. FDJ is a fading dream now...

The location thing is a nonsense in my opinion. Neither London or Manchester has a beach or sun. You’d live rurally in both areas not central.

CL football is literally the only thing. If he doesn’t want to be part of what we are looking to do at United feck him.

Well he's not given up then it seems, and if the Chelsea news is true, he's being very very naive
I think he asked the question - we are in for Frenkie?

As if to say - who told you that

To negotiate with his agent and make sure the player wants to come. Which he obviously hasn't done.

Not only hasn't he done due diligence he's also failed to plan for the deal collapsing.

Its been said all along they've been given the idea he'll come, he rightly doesn't want to give up his money owed before hand so he isn't going to leave without those guarantees of that money regardless of us or Chelsea

The future of Chelsea vs the future of United is all he should be looking at. Hard not to give Chelsea the edge.

De Jong is the equivalent of Fellaini tbh, he's really good at one thing, in a specific system that caters for that one thing but limited elsewhere. This talk of him being a generational player is wrong imo, generational players aren't 25 struggling to hold down a place at their clubs.

I think that's unfair, he's a very good midfielder but he excels in a role that Ten Hag values, which is why he would be more valuable to Utd than maybe another club and probably why the summer has been spent chasing him.

I'm torn on this all, on the one hand I think the club should support the manager and provide him the tools to implement his ideas. On the other hand if it doesn't work out you're kinda starting a rebuild again because of that specificity and needing to adapt to a new approach.

It's all a bit fecked.

I think he asked the question - we are in for Frenkie?

He was being sarcastic as it’s common knowledge. The fact he mentioned it though suggests he still has some confidence though otherwise why bother.

Thats what Klopp said about players who demand CL as part of the requirements for signing.

It’s like people have not paid any attention to our transfer dealings in the last decade. This type of nonsense is exactly the amateurish crap we do.

We are the only club that would actually be better off letting some kid playing Football Manager make decisions, as that’s essentially what we’ve been doing anyway.

He wouldn't be living in Manchester, he'd be in Hale which is one of the most expensive areas in the country. Cobham/Esher, Surrey is where he would probably live if he moved to Chelsea
