How is it dilly-dallying if the issues lie between de Jong and Barcelona regarding his deferred wages? How exactly can we speed that along in any possible way?
We can't just turn round to Barca and say "Oi lads, hurry up, this is getting daft now". I don't think it works like that. Plus de Jong isn't going to just give up 17m is he? The club will stick with him until they either sign him, or it becomes absolutely crystal clear that he's not going to come, and we're not at that point yet
We still have 3 weeks for the window. Plus, it's not like we've been dilly-dallying doing nothing.

We've agreed a fee with Barca. We're just awaiting a resolution between FdJ and Barca. In the meantime, we've signed other players, and looking to sign others. Wouldn't call that dilly-dallying.
Well, in that case, we will have to wait and see out the transfer window, or the signing up of FDJ, whichever is sooner.

About a month ago when United had agreed a fee with Barca about Fdj Chelsea were trying to get Koulibaly and other players and were not interested in Fdj.

If what we are hearing that both United and Chelsea are now willing to pay the deferred wages is true then yes we dilly dallied as we could have paid the 17M a month ago.

This is going to become the largest transfer thread and it really doesn't deserve that title :(

Hazard flashbacks going to haunt the Cafe.

Thats pretty much it. We can't do anything until the issues are sorted with Barca. Either with them paying the wages he believes he's owed, or United stepping in and saying we've had enough, we'll pay it.
If a point arrives where we believe that chasing de Jong is becoming pointless, and we're not going to get him, then i can imagine we'd just pack up and walk. For us to not do that yet, we must have some pretty damn strong assurances from the player that he wants to come and we're his preferred destination, as you can be sure that ten Hag would know of any other interest and how that would affect us

Hmm, if this is true then his pending decision could be worrying. If he's finally ready to make a decision after 14 weeks now that Chelsea have got involved, I'm not sure the decision is going to be in our favour :nervous:
Has anything Sport reported so far been true? I honestly don’t know.

Yup, you’s potato munching Guinness swigging eejits get everywhere! :D
It’s all good, I’m the direct descendant of an Irish immigrant to the midlands as my mammie was born and raised in Dublin before moving to the midlands as a child. I’m proud of my Irish heritage but consider myself English. But hey, we’re all on the same team here!

You have some of the good stuff coursing through the veins. We claim you as ours.

Honestly, in all my years of supporting United -- starting back in the pre-Fergie days -- I have never ever heard of a deferred payment/owed salary scenario.

Back then, this is what I was more focused on:

Shoot magazine insert/gift at the start of every season. And not someone's feckin deferred salaries.

Simpler times.

Oh my, what a blast from the past! Those were some great days. I used to love this magazine. Used to be an event purchasing it, taking it home and playing with it.

Without sounding old, I prefer those days.

Or maybe we didn't want to pay the 17m because we were the only team interested at that time and we figured it was in our best interests to let it play out and allow Barca to sort the issues out? We had nothing to gain by spending an extra 17m when we didn't have too.

Even now, we don't fully know Chelseas stance, and it's only Sport reporting that Chelsea are willing to match the €80m (even though United have agreed €85m, so wheres that extra €5m gone). Other reports are saying that Chelsea have been offered numerous Barca players, including de Jong and are considering them. Others saying Chelsea are waiting for a green light from the player over a move and will bid when the wage issue has been resolved (even though if they were paying the wages anyway, they wouldn't have to wait for a green light, because by paying the wages, they'd CREATE the green light???). It just makes no sense, the whole thing is a mess of speculation

That's all good in a digital world, however, this is not how it works in the real world.

We are getting close to the longest Caf thread on a failed transfer, if this deal doesn't go through. 1342 was the previous longest, wasn't it?

You know what works in the real world?

So answer this simple question:

Are you happy with our transfers?

I also got this mag every week, and I'd forgotten all about the league tables insert. It was all so simple then.

If he’s been giving positive vibes to ETH for 14 weeks and then changes his mind last minute that’s a pretty poor show. I think he’ll come here .

I love this chart. What a memory!

Yup, look at Timber and Brobbey. They changed their minds and decided they didn't want to come, we moved on sharpish.
I know ten Hag wants de Jong, but i don't think he'd be stupid enough to stick around for a player that doesn't want to come and would go elsewhere given half the chance. ten Hag would know about the Chelsea interest, and would have asked about it as soon as they know. How do we know that Chelsea aren't hesitant to bid because they know de Jong wants to come to United and that they'd be wasting their time and it's Barca thats encouraging them to just go for it? We just don't know

Match/shoot/90 minutes were a staple of my reading growing up

No talk of levers. No deferred payments. Less hate or self-loathing of your own club. I always remember every start of every season was discussions of transfers and optimism.

Now the favourite pastime is to moan that the sky is falling. It cant be healthy.

One of the takeaways of Fever Pitch (movie) is that we love football because every season in August is like a re-boot or hot starting your life. A form of escapism and yet it felt real. The rollercoaster of life -- the elation, anger, hope, disappointment all packed into 10months. Then the great thing is we can re-boot and start again every august.

But we seem to have 50% of the folks here, being miserable gits that seem to be casing the destination rather than enjoying the journey. Maybe its the social media generation where affirmation and instant gratification are the primary objectives.

Thats changed. In that sense, the old days are much better, and certainly a lot healthier mentally -- filled with hope, ambition and optimism.
