Fair enough, although I have concerns giving huge salary to a player who isn't commited (possibly, I wouldn't know, but there are rumours he doesn't want to join United).
I just don't know, will trust ETH on this one. High risk high reward transfers (Pogba, Varane, Ronaldo) don't work for us, so I'm sceptical though.
Can we stop with the ‘not committed’ crap. This isn’t some Di Maria situation where the player isn’t interested. He will be playing for a former manager who knows his game inside out. ETH also won’t stand for shoddy lazy players, give him some credit! He will perform!

Honestly wouldn't mind if we did whatever we could to get it over the line.

Would be much better than the alternative of not getting the improvement in midfield it would provide and missing out on the manager's number 1 target.

That would set off his debut season with more negativity and bad feeling than it needs already with all the Ronaldo bullshit hovering overhead.

The need and benefit would outweigh the material price in my eyes and I doubt we'd do anything better with the money we'd save if we don't pull it off

Citeh losing Silva and us signing Frenkie would be a nice way to end the window

With the 25% wage reduction all the players are on, £450k would make FDJ our highest earner. Actually we should do it just to see Ronaldo throw a hissy fit
That’s why I have a hard time believing it. You can’t reduce everybody else’s wage and then smash the wage structure. Quickest way to upset the squad.

I'm past caring.

When did we decide we were fine with waiting it out for decisions from a club that doesn't want to honour contracts + a player that is clearly not that bothered to come to us?

Such a shame we made it so clear we would wait to the very last minute if needs be. Upside is we could reclaim some dignity with a last minute broken fax or something. Egg all over their faces, wankers.

But no, we will meekly finally get our man two months too late and many on here will celebrate like we have won the World Cup. I very much doubt he is worth it.
Watching him he isn't worth all that time and money. I hope I am wrong if we get him but I have not seen that he could make us instantly better. This is, for me, just another vanderBeek saga. People think to much of player just because Ajax came far in Champions League. Little bit like making Pochettino world class just because he came to final in Champions League.

There are lot of players out there who would be better for us, cost less and are easier to get.

You can do it without this kind of stuff. I believe in you. Try once again to write more politly

Problem is I'm starting to wonder whether ETH has the foggiest about what it takes to compete in the Premier League. You just can't sit around waiting for your centrepiece like this, too many ways it can go wrong and no wriggle room whatsoever.

Can anyone explain to me why City wouldn't get the bloke as part of the Bernardo deal? It's a no-brainer for all involved.

And no, this is not me getting nervous about rivals. Last year I actually wanted them to sign Ronaldo and crash and burn with him.

City don't really need him and have shown no interest in signing him so far.

As 'reliable' as Sport are, I really hope we aren't doing this otherwise what was the point of the brinkmanship?
Well, they have called our bluff. If it's a case of pay up or we don't get the player I hope we just pay the money and get this over with. It improves us significantly.

Sometimes, the message is so wrong and ridiculous that all you can do is retort in disgust. This is one of those times.
If the poster genuinely believes FDJ isn’t a star then frankly it’s not worth my time to write out ‘with all due respect yadda yadda’. He is clearly clueless and I called him out as such. Sorry if that upsets you.

Everything involving the Catalan club is bizarre, but it's hard for me to understand your club's position, both for agreeing to pay more than what Barcelona paid for him when he only devalued and for never issuing an ultimatum or getting up from the table.

Nobody else wants to buy Frenkie, no matter how much the bizarre Catalans try to abuse the innocence of newcomer Todd, who has already been well ridiculed for those people's dirty methods.

Betting everything all summer for a player who has never shown any interest in being your player is not the way to go.

And then you have the case of Cristiano.

How about changing direction?

Do something better with that money?

Let Cristiano go with his ego wherever he wants (that's not Chelsea) and let the blonde boy in the sun with his rain-hating girlfriend.

It's us who should be calling their bluff. It's Barca who need to sell. Yeah our midfield might be shit and we really want him, but life will go on and we'll be fine in the grand scheme of things. Barca are in financial dire straights and can't register new players. It's them who will eventually cave in and do whatever it takes to get him and others off the wage bill.

I'm talking about the wage issue specifically. There has seemingly been a standoff over it.

Yeah United are unstable... that's how you know its utter BS. Chelsea and Bayern have no interest in him, its Barca trying to get more money or more bids in for him and it won't work
Barca, a club who may or may not exist by the end of his contract and Chelsea, who have a new owner after their mobster boss got kicked out. Pure stability

It's perfectly justified to have concerns, don't you think?
He's coming after a meh season, being pushed out by Barca, nobody seems to be interested in signing him for those wages, coming to a new and very demanding league, and will be asked to do a lot of dirty work on top of running our play. I'm not even so sure he's the right guy for current United team, not because I doubt his quality, but because there is a huge effort required from our midfielders to cover for all forwards. Maybe that will change, but too many "maybe's" for me to feel confident.
Like I said, I will trust ETH on this one.

We're unstable yet his dream club have quite literally had a club president and the man who signed him arrested during his time at the club...

And that he has been proven innocent. You should find out about the mafia that was in that operation by the government.
Search Commissioner Villarejo.

It's Barca propaganda to make it look like we've made a ridiculous offer that they can't turn down, rather than a distress sale of the family silver in order to pay the gas bill.

I just read this as meaning it's getting closer, as they're already rationalising the sale.

What is wrong whit what I said? If you have watched spanish league and Barcelona you would say, why are we paying this much attention to this player.

DeJong is not a star. He is good fotballer but it is far from being a star. For me star is someone who is above lot of players. He isn't. He is not even best midfielder in Barcelona. Good player and thats it. If he was that good why isn't it more interest from other clubs for him.

Yes, Barcelona disappears tomorrow or the day after tomorrow.

They'd have to change the constitution of the club for a sale to private owners.

If the choice is between going into administration or selling up private owners then I think that they'll go for the latter.

Maybe we should offer him a £20m release clause if we don't win the CL or PL within 2 seasons. Keeps the club and the manager on their toes

Keep him at Barcelona. Keep him. Keep him. Keep him. Drama can stay where it is and we don’t need to have more of that.

This thread is getting beyond anything. We are not even talking about a ”star”.
Thanks. I’ll let the board know.

Justified concerns are justified. But Frenkie would be joining us primarily for ETH because of his previous relationship with him. I don’t think he would come if Erik
wasn’t there at this point, it’s not just phoning it in for the money because he doesn’t really want the move.
Trusting the manager at this point is the correct way forward. We agree on that.

I understand you buy into the Barcelona can do no wrong narrative, but as a fan you must at least have some concern for the future of the club. Your financial situation is dire but you act as if its fine. I don't get it

This is getting ridiculous now. Surely Barca need to just pay up and let him leave.

Barcelona clearly want him gone since they are trying to screw him everyway possible by not paying the deferred wages and asking him to reduce his salary WHILE also signing players like Lewandowski. It really wouldn't surprise me at all if they ended up paying Lewandowski a huge signing on bonus that should have been used for FDJs deferred wages.

I think we should start to apply some pressure and give Barca a deadline otherwise go for alternative options. As much as we want FDJ if we wait too long our second choices will become even more expensive the closer we get to deadline day

You guys don't get it. It has nothing to do with Barcelona keeping up this deal, De Jong simply doesn't want to leave. There's no poker to be had here. De Jong stays and they'll pay an insane amount of wages, paying him 17m to leave as an alternative is quite straightforward. The transfer isn't going through because De Jong doesn't want to leave. And why would he? Dream club, insane wages, and now their squad can compete for major trophies. He's not coming. If you guys don't get this by now, maybe you'll get it when he's playing for Barcelona on the 30th of August.

Fair enough if he joins for ETH. The second bolded bit about whether he does or doesn't want to move we really can't say, the only thing we know for sure is Barca want to get rid of him.
