French Open 2011

How I wish Djokovic was playing today. Can't stand that fecking fistpumping of nadal's coach. Although the serbs do it as well, but really would like a different French Open champion.

Is there any doubt that Nadal completely owns Federer? 17 wins from 25 meetings after this, most of those played during federers golden spell whilst Nadal was still a relative junior, and in the big grand slam meetings? Federer has never beaten Nadal in a final outside of wimbledon.

Amazing player.

The thing that makes me disagree with Federer being the best player of all time. No number one player in the world should be dominated by any one player like this, let alone someone who's supposedly the best in the history.

Fully agree i share exactly the same opinion, Nadal has mastered him on every surface so much so whenever they meet in any major event you'd put your house on the Spaniard winning with ease.

Yes, people will point out his record of grand slams, but you can't be the best in the history of the sports when someone has beat you 17 out of 25, many of those in the big occasions where the best (like federer) strut out their real tennis. It simply means this guy is better than you, so how could you be the best ever at the game then?

Nadal is 101-0 when leading 2-0 in sets in grand slams. Unbelievable!

It's over, unless a bigger miracle than us beating barca from 3-1 down ensues before our very eyes in the next couple of hours.

Federer is a great, but he was lucky to be born in the era he is. He didnt have a genuine challenger.

I mean when he was talking about rivalries and cited his rivarly with Roddick... Federers such an arse. Hope Nadal bitch slaps him and makes him cry for the millionth time.

He keeps hitting it back to Federer's back hand. This has been a good strategy for a few years now for players.

If Federer was absolutely dreadful on clay and never won a match, he would have a positive record against Nadal overall. The fact he has played him so many times is a testament to how good Federer is on Clay, that he consistently reaches Finals. On the other surfaces, Nadal doesn't play Federer as often because he doesn't reach the Final as often as Federer does on clay

Thank you! For me Sampras is the best player of all time even though he did not win the French Open just because of the fact that he had so many good challenges.

One thing I believe is that Sampras has the game to not let any one player dominate him, as he has said himself.

Federer has the better backhand, but Sampras has a more powerful forehand (he hits them flat and heavy, often their opponent don't last three shots from that side of him), the best service and second service of all time and far better netplay.

He would get thumped worse than Federer on clay, but would win more often than not on other surfaces.

Nadal is the greatest clay courter ever BY a huge margin(Bjorg second *another big gap* Federer third btw) and his rivalry with Federer is completely lopsided because of that. What was his headstart because of clay 7-1 or something? Love both players, they are 1 and 2 easily, but in terms of all-round game, I think Fed has the slight edge....longevity, consistency(7 years without missing a QF is insane, forget that only 2 of them were QFs) his slams mixed about more etc.

This is the best Federers played on clay vs Nadal in years and it's gonna be a 3-setter, absolute shame if so, for us fans if anything. Nadal clearly not in his head as once was as he would of completely caved in after the first otherwise....give me Wimbledon please.

I have never seen anyone in the modern era come into the net after serving like Sampras and Becker used to and dominate the serve games. Plus there is this monster serve that Sampras has.

Sampras got dominated all the time on clay and he never even ended up playing Kuertan on it often.

I guess if Federer just went out in the first round every year, people would ignore this and he'd officially be the GOAT. Their record would also be more like 6-6 or something too -_-

Awesome from Federer the last few games. He was 2-4 down and its now 6-5, serving for the set.

Respect.

By domination, I mean having an overall hold on you. Let's be honest, Federer played close to his best and played a few amazing finals on HIS surfaces, grass and at the aussie open and still got defeated by Nadal.

Nadal would last 4 sets max against a Sampras in his prime on grass for example.

No number one player prior to this has been dominated like Federer has with Nadal because they tend to not to get further enough on their other surfaces to play the best on it(Sampras-Kuerten, Borg just completely ignored Aussie Open)

To come back from 2-4 down in that set and win 7-5 is simply awesome.

Federer wasn't anywhere near his best in the 08 final, especially the first 2 sets. So many terrible errors, it was obvious from the prior two Slams that year he was off his game a bit. For Federer to even get that to 5 was insane, he was so below par and yes that was partly Nadal being in his head due to the French thing.

The Aussie Open I give you, superb match between them both being as close to their best as possible....if not here today, since this is the best Federer has looked on clay for me, and Nadal is Nadal.

Nadal had Federers head because he held the French over him for so long, and since Federer won it finally, they haven't met in a Slam now that thats gone....today they finally met and look at the difference in Federer, the mind control isn't what it was.

It probably won't make a difference to who wins the match but it's good to see more of a game being made of it.

Federer has changed the game plan in game. No more short stuff for Nadal to eat up, he is going for broke like Del Potro did to him.
Nadal is tired too, thought the game was over.
I have always wanted Federer to play Nadal this way, bring him to the net a lot, get him to go back and fought and he will get tired, he is human no matter what is in him.

Nadal began having a hold on him on HIS surfaces as well, until Federer stopped getting far enough in tournaments to face him. Although lately he's been beaten by Nadal on hardcourts again in non-slam tournies.

Federer NEVER had it easy on his surfaces in garndslam finals and you saw Nadal taking over soon enough at age 21 or 22?

W bring kuerten up btw, muster was by far more dominant in his time.

Look I support federer nowadays as he's the closest to Sampras was in his time. But even I can see Nadal's game was troubling Federer and even when the latter fought hard to win one, you always felt it could have easily gone the other way. Put it this way, Nadal is at least on par with Federer on his surfaces. On his surface he dominates Fed.

His started getting in his due to his dominance over him on clay though, thats obviously going to translate onto the other surfaces. That headstart Nadal got in this rivalry was a killer to Federers mind whenever they played.

I bring up Guga because he was the better clay player. I could care less about someone who wins Masters and then mostly fails at the French.
