I think Southampton targeted him a bit as someone not that comfortable in possession but he did really well to get the ball moving forward. Good game on the whole and certainly one of his more promising displays on the ball.
Yeah that was the part I was thinking of, lovely little roll back and just left his marker for dead. That trick which he did in the end to avoid press was just class. Clearly shows that he is becoming more and more confident and hopefully he keeps on improving like he has been over the last two years. Credit to Ole for making him adjust to this league and giving him confidence
It was very late. Almost before the third goal.Yeah that was the part I was thinking of, lovely little roll back and just left his marker for dead.
The confidence is flowing and showed exactly why Guardiola wanted him - he'd be ace in this city team currently.
@GifLord any chance of a clip? was fairly late around 2-1/2-2

or this?
posters are starting to say that he and Bruno are the heartbeat of the team and I fully agree. First 2 names on the team sheet. You go into the Fred thread where people should be happy and they still just can’t see it with him. It’s a pity. People have defended Pogba’s half hearted performances here for years but can’t get fully behind someone who seems like a very hard worker and who actually betters his competition every week. Like it’s
there happening on the tv in front of you over and over again. On balance Yes he’ll misplace the odd pass in a dangerous area but that’s where he plays it goes with the territory, it hasn’t led to a goal in a while whereas his interceptions have created a lot of attacking opportunities for us but people still chose to focus on the negative. He’s a box to box player. He’s supposed to take risks from time to time. He does so much for us already that people are in danger of mixing him up with a DM. That’s not his job.
if he does not do his regularly really bad 1-3 misplaced passes, he is definitely a great player. I would not say, we need an upgrade on him. Fred, Bruno and a DM
Some saying we need an upgrade on this guy like they grow on trees. Not many better at what he does around.
It's not about being wrong. I am sure a lot of people were right in slanting him for his poor performances in first season. They just don't want to admit they were wrong.
People find it hard to understand how important off the ball work is.It's not about being wrong. I am sure a lot of people were right in slanting him for his poor performances in first season.
Problem is that people are unwilling to accept that he has improved alot. They just bring up one or two misplaced paces to back up their claims when they should actually be looking at the larger picture, they just don't want to change opinions
That is true. In fact there is a stat flying around that with Fred in the team, the percentage of winning is increased by 20 percent or something and we have only lost one game (arsenal) when he is playing and that too he was played as a CDM which is not his natural positionPeople find it hard to understand how important off the ball work is.
It's easy to see when a player is scoring goals regularly or doing the final pass for an assist - that means they're a great player.
It's the same for Kante, nobody would have picked him out originally but somebody smart at Leicester (probably through statistics) spotted him and obviously watched him closer. You can watch a highlight reel of them and see nothing special, but it's what they bring the team that just improves everything 10%.
The thing I love the most about Fred is his stamina, he genuinely never looks tired so he can keep running and pressing hard even when his opponents get tired. While he might not be the cleanest of tacklers the pressure he exerts either allows us a 2-1 advantage or makes them over play and lose the ball.
There's no coincidence that with Fred in midfield we've looked the best for a long time, and probably a key reason to why our away record is so good.
And even that was a penalty, not a true loss. (still don't know why they played him at the base of the diamond that game, very odd decision)That is true. Very rightAnd even that was a penalty, not a true loss. (still don't know why they played him at the base of the diamond that game, very odd decision)
But yeah, nobody is saying he's the next Modric but he's a steady work horse who gives us 110% every match, and is improving on the ball. Get a proper playmaker next to him (DVB) and I think we will see the team flourish.
Um that argument should be like let a CDM play with him so that he can do box to box more which seems to be his strength? And even that was a penalty, not a true loss. (still don't know why they played him at the base of the diamond that game, very odd decision)

He's not really a box to box, he isn't a goal threat and is better holding outside the box ready to sweep up any potential counter attacks.Um that argument should be like let a CDM play with him so that he can do box to box more which seems to be his strength?
And, we have a player maker playing ahead of them.
I'd say his perfect partner (and the perfect fit for our team in general) would probably be a deep-lying playmaker. Basically someone like Carrick or a better version of Matic. Someone who is defensive in the sense that they are normally well positioned to stop or at least slow counter attacks, but just as importantly they are playing a big part in controlling the team around and setting the tempo when we have the ball. Put Fred and Bruno next to someone like that and it gives us an incredibly solid combination of defensive and pressing ability while also having the ball-playing ability to control things ourselves. The latter is what we miss when we play McTominay in that role, while Matic improves things in that aspect but still isn't good enough IMO. VDB (and McTominay) could then rotate with any of them depending on form and what we need.Um that argument should be like let a CDM play with him so that he can do box to box more which seems to be his strength?

Thanks for reminding me of that. It was hilarious.WTF was he at for the free kick - like a saturday night fever dance move sliding behind the wall
Hilarious stuff. Thanks for reminding me of that. It was hilarious.
He does it occasionally, and I'm pretty sure Young used to do it occasionally as well. It's obviously done when they think there's a fair chance the set-piece taker will try to go low under the wall, but the way Fred did it this time was just spectacular.
