Went forward well, didn't do anything else well.

He keeps confirming this for me, he's not a good defensive player, which is why we have to use two rather one of him and Mctominay/Matic. It has nothing to do with how this or that the defence is. I don't like Lindelof, but our back 4 is not our problem, Fred and Mctominay are just not good enough individually to have solid starting positions at a club this big.

perhaps, but I think what we saw tonight is that we need Fred and McT together. Neither are perfect, far from it - but they are our best combination in the middle.

The aim should be to improve that rather than let it sit that way. let them compete head to head for the lower partner role next season. Fred did show some good things today finding a few key passes, which is a stark improvement, but we need a player who can both protect us against counters and help our build up from the back. I'm sure Fred would look more solid with the licence to simply press his heart out.

Exactly. Stuck with Pogba losing the ball and Donny hiding. A one man midfield. Nice assist but he can’t do everything by himself
He wasn't a one man midfield, he was equally as poor as his team mates, hence why the entire midfield fell to pieces.

for next season, sure and I personally think we would really improve with a specialist DM. All tonight proved was that Fred/ Pogba is not a good combination and Fred/ McT is currently the best we have, and by some distance.

He got an assist and he worked his arse off. Gave away a goal trying to take charge, at least someone tried. He’s got his flaws but he still did more than the other 2 combined.
He did something decent and something terrible which leaves him at a net gain of 0.

The goal contributions aside his all round play was nowhere near good enough, same with the other two. He shouldn't be coming out of that game with any credit, it was a poor performance and he'll know it better than anyone.

Captain Chaos at it again, but what a tidy assist.

He really needs to make up his mind if he's shit or just brilliant.

Im not trying to say he had a good game. I don’t think anyone in the team deserves any credit when we lose but at the same time Fred was still better than Pogba and vdb. Two superior players supposedly.

I still really like him. The frustrating thing is that almost every other game he has a bad error and your deepest midfielder shouldn't really be that error prone.

Otherwise, can't fault him for the work rate, interceptions, tackles etc.

One of his better games on the ball with a nice assist but he was constantly higher up the pitch than Pogba and then tried a Cruyff on the edge of our box to gift them their 2nd goal.

That’s nonsense. Fred’s all round performance was decent. And his job was made even more difficult than it should have been by playing alongside a CM who seemed to think making a tackle or tracking runnners was beneath him.

If he had pulled this trick off, he would have creamed ourselves. It was a nice brazilian thing, Roma player got the perfect touch on it.
I don't think he did anything wrong there. He reacted fast, it's not like he had time to think about it, he took his chance to get out of this tight area and failed

Was brilliant yesterday MOTM for me. Did mess up for there second goal but everyone makes mistakes and it was a great finish to be fair.

That's called confirmation bias. When you actually watched the game, the issues we had were feck all to do with either midfielder. Bailly was determined to give them opportunities with poor tackling, while as soon as we brought on two reserve fullbacks they managed to get in down the sides again and again.

He should be able to handle being put in that situation if he's going to be a first choice midfielder for Manchester United, lets get real here.

That's as bad as people blaming Maguire for the Leicester goal.

Bit of both isn't it. Make a pass to anybody in that position, surrounded by players like he was, and eventually they're going to get caught out. He shouldn't be turning into a blind space like that though.

Some have permanently plastered 'flop' or 'not worth the price on his head'. His mistakes will be exaggerated and his good plays will be understated. He's also not flashy enough when you look at the other top European teams centre midfielders. His place should be As a solid squad option but he could also be a starter in a world class team

Agree. I think the pass to Eddy gets lost because he put it over the bar. Second pass wasn't easy either. Pogs went AWOL yesterday and looked leggy. There was no tracking back either from anyone else either. Not saying Fred is the answer but equally Scott goes missing too at times.

Well as a team we obviously try to get out of trouble by playing out from the back. So the central midfielders maybe more than anyone have the responsibility to be an outball for the centrebacks.

Yeah everyone gets caught out sometimes, the likelihood of that will increase if you dick about trying to do tricks though.

It didn't cost us but in another game like the Leicester cup match it will. So Fred really should be aware of his skill set and keep it simple in those situations.

He was also the one who put through a first time ball to create the great opportunity that Cavani put just over the bar in the first half. Pretty sure it was him that also put a slide ball out to Greenwood in a good position as well. And then of course there was the through ball to Rashford that he just overhit.

It wasn't a great game (surprised somebody said it was his best all-round performance for us) but he was far better than some of the others.

Fred had a lot of very good moments, the assist for Cavani's first goal, created the big chance when Cavani hit the bar, plenty of interceptions but also some poor mistakes, including Roma's 2nd goal.

I tuned in to the match in the first minute, so I missed the lineups. 10 minutes later, Fred fouled someone, and I was surprised he was playing because he hadn't touched the ball that whole time (or so it seemed / they didn't say his name).

Fred's good qualities are the minimum we should be demanding for anyone playing for United. Meaning, any midfielder of note we would sign to replace him would be at least as good, and probably better, in all of the areas in which Fred is believed to excel. His weaknesses are too great for him to be realistically considered a long term option. Just like Fellaini, who played his hardest and tried his best and came up with some goals, ultimately Fred just isn't of the required standard.

Against Roma he showed us each Fred: the good (his through ball that should have been converted), the bad (his inability to shield the defense or to break up play in midfield), and the ugly (his pass the lead to them scoring). He wouldn't get in any of the top six sides, but for some reason he starts for us.

Aston Villa 1:3 Man Utd
Very good in the second half. Dominated the midfield along with Pogba.

He was very good in first & second half to me. McTominay was passenger in first half but performed better in second half.

I really value his forward passing.

The deeper he plays and when he plays facing our own half - he can be prone to mistakes that leads to goals.

Not a CDM but a CM.

Very close to my MOTM today, he was good in the first half with McTominay being the passenger in the team

2 games in a row where miscontrol from Fred near our box has cost us a goal.

Wasn't a miscontrol, pass was short'ish but thought Scott could still have done better. Then there's poor defending by Lindelof. Only an agenda puts that solely on Fred.....

Good performance. His pressing is very important to the team, even though he only won 3 out of 6 tackles attempted. 96% pass completion including some good switches of play to Wan-Bissaka in space. Nice backheel in the 2nd half. Shot from distance that was saved in the first half.
