He was ok.
I have no clue why the commentators keep saying he cost us £60 mil.

Surprisingly, from my perspective, he actually made a really positive difference. Our use of the ball in midfield visibly improved. I admit, given how crap it was before his introduction, that's not saying too much. However, it was a pleasant surprise to see Fred a) not totally left behind by the pace of a Premier League game; b) improve us. Fingers crossed he shows me up for writing him off by kicking on from his average (at best) first season.
Because it would've made perfect sense to play a CB further forward than proper CMs...As the holding midfielder.
He played in a pivot at Shakhtar just fine didn't he? I think it's a coaching issue. It's the same with all our talent to be fair. We haven't had a competent framework or coaching to maximise the talent and it's been the same for how many years now.Not sure we have the right protection for him. He has a lot of similarities to Pogba.

There's a quality player there in him, we see glimpses of it, but we just need to provide the right platform.
The problem is, bar Matic, all of our CMs do, and Matic looks done.He needs defensive cover behind him to thrive but he is a very good creative player. When he defends he often plants himself and that makes him very easy to bypass.
He did ok.
When he came on, McTominay pushed higher up and Fred dropped deep. But then Fred got caught out of position a couple of times, so Ole brought on Tuanzebe to play as the holding midfielder instead.
I'm still struggling to figure out what role he should have in our midfield. He has some quality, but also a few glaring weaknesses.
Our problem is we don't have a competent defensive mid.The right platform is to play him in a 3, with Mctominay and Pogba.

Unless you mean McTominay alongside Fred in a pivot with Pogba in attacking mid. That could work maybe.

He was settling into our team well after finally being given a consistent run, with standout performances against PSG & Arsenal, but he made a couple mistakes and all that has seemed to have been forgotten now.Surprisingly, from my perspective, he actually made a really positive difference. Yeah that could be promising. Pogba wouldn't have the problem of being starved of service further forward with Fred behind him i think. Matić's legs being finished is what let us down when he played that role.Yes that's exactly what I mean, Mctominay and Fred behind Pogba.
Is like to see a Fred, mctominay and pogba midfield being given a shot. On paper at least, it seems to have a bit of everything
So true. McTominay must be one of.the first names on the teamsheet now.Fred's good games last season did tend to be when he had McTominay next to him rather than Matic, so now that McTominay has established himself ahead of Matic in the pecking order hopefully that'll help Fred settle. Play those two along with Pogba and if it works we suddenly might have a decent midfield.
