Formations to fit in Rooney, Van Persie and Mata?

Acceleration is the forgotten hero in terms of dribbling ability, top pace is not as important for dribbling and more important for making off the ball runs in to open space.

By the way, Rooney's actually a lot faster than a lot of people give him credit for.

That's not all. There are many other arguments that seem like they were pulled out of thin air. Like how Rooney is somehow suddenly slow. Now let's see if this is true.

Not according to FIFA.

Definitely wasn't slow during the game against Arsenal last season either. Rooney also covered quite a lot of distance in that game as well. So he definitely isn't lazy or declining in work rate. Nice to note Carrick covered the most miles in that game too. :)

And he has historically maintained that speed range. Nothing's changed, really. At least in terms of physical performance.

I always like statistics and saw it earlier and it is interesting indeed, but like I said max pace isn't constantly important in many situations per game in comparison to technique and acceleration. I don't think anybody doubts that Rooney could play the wide role in a Barcelona being served with great through-balls he was allowed to run at. LVG doesn't play with that sort of winger though, he wants them to be able to beat their man as the first priority.

4-3-3, 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1, and 4-3-2-1, would all work. Thats without doing something weird like going to a back 3 or back 5.
I gotta agree. I can imagine those formations working.

Well do you happen to have any statistics about Rooney's acceleration? In comparison with other players?

I suppose he is far from a Robben or a Ribery, but judging from the Ronaldo era, he did do a decent job as a left forward cutting in. He is rather fast, has good technique, good work rate and a good football brain. Seeing as LvG is a very adaptable man, he may consider allowing that.

Posted in another thread, this is given that we sign Vidal and a CB which i considered as Vermaelen. Players can be changed based on our signing though.

I don't but that would be interesting to see. He has clearly lost his explosiveness which was one of his best traits when he broke through. It allowed him to blast past players without actually having great dribbling technique and ball control. Even if he didn't get past the player he usually had that half-a-meter to get a shot of.

He hasn't shown that ability in quite a couple of years and the same applies to RVP who used to be played out wide but now wouldn't have the same explosiveness for that.

Robben and Messi are great examples of how important acceleration is for dribbling compared to top speed, they don't possess that extreme top speed that Valencia or Ronaldo does but their change of tempo in their first steps is incredible.

Of course, we have Cavani in PSG where they had a similar situation as we have right now of having two top strikers where neither is a dribbler. They sorted it by playing Cavani out wide and he is more of a forward who starts out wide than a winger so if LVG wants to change his tactics to suit in Rooney I think it can be done. Looking at PSG though they are better off with Lavezzi and Moura than with Cavani out wide though.
