Gaming Football Manager 2009

Said I would not buy FM09 but broke ankle yesterday and with feck all else to do for three weeks I brought it today. Anyway, simple question, as I can't be asked to find this out for myself through trial and error. Is there any way you can get wide players like Ronnie and Messi to make runs into the box regularly now that they have fecked around with the arrows that dictated were the players made runs to. I used to play 4-2-3-1 and have Ronaldo make runs into the box to mimick the way he plays for United but Eidos have done that in now and wide players can only make runs in straight lines. I don't want to do something unrealistic like have Ronnie upfront as a striker. Any simple tactical fix to get him into the box from a wide position like he does for United.

Cross ball rarely (makes them loathe to stay wide), shoot from distance mixed (get them into shooting positions, then let them decide what to do), forward runs rarely/mixed (so they're the ones doing the dribbling and passing), run with ball often, through balls rarely/mixed, high mentality and moderate-low creative freedom (to stop them fannying around - get them into position, then let them do their work).

A free role would work on Messi, but not sure about Ronaldo (not sure what his Free Role attribute is). If he's an F C rather than an ST, free role would be OK. It's recommended as it allows them to drift everywhere. If you do use this, drop creative freedom lower a notch or two.

Oh, and play narrow.

I got bored of my Reading game so I decided to start a new one. Sold Pirlo for £22m at the start of my Milan game. Bought Kuzmanovic, Alexis Sanchez and Andre Ayew with the money. Next up, N'Koulou and Sakho.

My best ever effort with Rochdale on an FM game, delighted to get them up to mid table Championship so quickly into the game. I've played on a bit further than that, and it's hit the rails a tad. The next season I survived with a few games to go and finished 18th, but this new season I'm 7 games in and have 1 goal and 4 points to show for it. I've managed to raise a transfer budget (something I haven't had on my rise up the divisions) from flogging players who wouldn't sign new contracts, the problem is my wage budget doesn't match, and few decent players want to sign for me! A bit like City, I've been left with a squad not good enough, and a couple of million in the coffers I can't spend

My tactic has been to play very narrow, 4-1-3-2, concentrating on buying the best midfielders I can, and having pacy strikers up front I have running onto the ball beyond the defence. I still have good midfielders, but the strikers have dried up. The transfer market and player generation always lets the game down as the game time goes deeper if you ask me

Brad, go to Board Room < Make Board Request < Adjust Budgets
(or something like that). Then you can put a wee bit of the transfer money towards wages, and get a few players.

Yeh I did that Brophs I'm not daft! But we're still only talking upping wages from 4 grand to 6, and it doesn't change the fact players don't want to come!

Fair enough. When I'm playing as a small team I tend to sift through the clubs teams of smaller nations(Romania, some of the South American teams, Australia etc.) and pick up a player or two from there. Failing that, get yourself a parent club and get a few loanees.

It's these moments that makes Football Manager so good. I've just about played a full season in my new "long term" game, where, unlike most games I play, my plan is to go where the wind takes me. If I get good offers, then I'll take them, instead of only trying to build my current team into Champions League winners.

I put my experience as a professional football, and managed to get a job with Senegal. I've also got a job with rubbish Norwegian side Bodø/Glimt, and I've done a fairly good job there (not getting relegated would be fairly good, to be honest). But it's with Senegal I've done the best. I won my first 7 matches (friendlies and World Cup Qualifiers) before losing to Belgium in a friendly, and then Ghana in the 3rd Round of the Qualifiers. We're in groups of 4, and only one team qualifies to the World Cup from each group. You can imagine my dismay when I was drawn in the same group as probably the best African team (together with Cameroon, perhaps).

I beat both of the other teams twice, but my loss to Ghana meant I had to beat them in the last game, while they only needed a draw. I went for it and played very offensively. It paid off and I completely dominated the game. I scored on a penalty after having an earlier shout turned down, and I had like 20 shots by the end of the game, including one which hit the post. I didn't get another goal, though, and all it would take was one goal to put me out it. They went for it in the last 10 minutes, and it was incredibly nerve wrecking. In the end I managed to hold on, and the feeling was incredible. It's just a game, but as far as game-feelings go that ranks up there.

Yeah nice. I've been planning to do the same thing for ages but don't have time because of my uni work. In summer, or maybe as soon as Easter I'm gonna do what you've done and see where it takes me. I've never done it before. Most I ever did was getting Bournemouth up to the premiership and then champions league, but i started to lose all my best players to bigger clubs, and i couldn't stop the board overiding my transfer policies, so I quit the game and haven't been back since.

I've not really been into this one as much as previous years but i gave i booted it up the other day and gave it a go.

Been playing around with tactics a lot, just to see what works and what doesn't really and one thing I've noticed is that the DM role is nowhere near as important as in previous years. It doesn't seem to have a bearing on how well you defend at all.

Strikers seem to get shite ratings almost every game too, it seems playing a lone striker bares more fruit.

Also, my team seem absolutely useless at defending set pieces. Is there a way to improve this?

Real madrid payed 20 million for fran merida, 2 seasons later i got him back on a free transfer.

Yeah, Real are clueless in the transfer market. They bought Paolo De Ceglie for £37m, Juve offered £5.5m to buy him 3 seasons ago.

Anyway, Balotelli is the BPITG.

Real are clueless indeed, anyone tried the percentage trick yet?

Might have been fixed with updates but I have 9.2 and I do it all the time... sell a player for tons, buy him back for TONS less, then when you sell have the percentage on the players next sale set on 10 or 15% so it's accepted, then you get additional funds rather than the deal voiding.

Did this once, totally by accident though.

It was one of those situations that, someone enquires about a player that you clearly don't want to sell, so you put something silly there just to shut the other team up.

In my case it was a 21 year old Rafael, who i said Roma can have for nothing, but have to pay me £40 million for his first International call up. As well as this, there was a £5 million buy back price (the minimum i was allowed was nothing, since the initial transfer was nothing) and a 50% percentage of next sale.

They accepted. It took him a few years before his call up, and Roma did nearly sell him, i don't know if still would have got the £40 mil if they did. Either way, i didn't buy him back, but it still seemed like some form of bug.

Just signed him for 7mil. Not played him yet though, he will arrive in January.

He good then?

Flamini just got signed by Arsenal for £27 million in my game. Also, Tottenham won the league.

I know about that trick, of course, but why do it? If you're going to blatantly cheat, why not just edit in a 200k stadium and all the money in the world?

Yeah, I got him in January 2010. £7m is a steal, I bought him for £23m. He wasn't great then, 2 goals in 12 games. Next season he did alright, 25 goals in 35 games, followed by 21 in 34. Then, I decided to use him as the main set piece taker. Scored 37 goals in 33 games, with 16 assists . He could've played more but I rotated and played Pato upfront against the weaker sides. For some reason, they don't play well together

In FM 2009, Only Madrid do it

Seems like everyone else is too smart

On my "do what I want" game United just lost the last game of the league 1-2 at Home. To Fulham. And finished 2nd, 1 point behind Arsenal. Who scored an 85th minute to win their last game of the season. After losing the three previous games (Arsenal, that is).

At least United won the Champions League, beating Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea and Werder Bremen (in that order).

Tottenham could not follow up their League winning success from last season, and only finished 9th. They did get the pleasure of beating Arsenal 3-0 in the FA Cup Final, though.

Oh, and Liverpool went out of the UEFA Cup group stages.

This is 11/12, by the way, and I just gained promotion to the Bundesliga with St. Pauli, after barely keeping them from relegation when I took over halfway through last season :D

I'd love to have a pc capable of running that many leagues.

Currently in my second season with Fulham. I went on holiday for my first 6 months in the job and came back with my team in 17th. Well that's where I stayed for the rest of the campaign. I really struggled to make progress, I'm a relegation battle veteran but I just couldn't make any headway. I bought Uche to play up top with johnson and I just couldn't score. Plus I conceded at least one goal every game from mix ups between my goalie and defenders in the six yard box.

In the summer after just surviving relegation the board were generous and gave me £20m. I sold a feck load of my shite team and brought in some class young players.

Asenjo in goal to replace the useless Schwarzer
Diogo at rb instead of crappy Paintsil
Mattock to replace Konchesky
Dunne in a bargain from City
Gioda on a free
Reginiussen for £1m (all good cbs, better than Hughes)

Zapater
Sunny for £1.6m
Zuculini for 700k, what a bargain he's turned out to be
Afellay for £6m

Uche
Paloschi
Sturridge for free
Fleck from Rangers, 17 year old genius
Ander and some other 18 year old potential talents.
Oh and my biggest expense was Demba Ba for £12m, he's scored 5 in 5 with a rating of 7.4

I play diamond 4-4-2 and have started the second season really well, already won 5 or 6 games, I only won 8 all last season

That sounds a bit like what I "went through". When I took over St. Pauli at the middle of the season they had been expected to do decently, and were around the relegation zone. For the rest of the season I battled against relegation, and seriously started wondering if I just wasn't good enough at the game (though in the end I finished a few points in the clear). Then after the summer window I had replaced almost all of the team from when I took over, and it went a lot better.

That just confirmed by theory that I'm quite decent at tactics, but my real strength is finding the right players, often cheaply (I don't use Genie or any other scout problem, it takes the fun away from the game). :p

Gioda on a free

In terms of overall value, he's the best CB in the game. He'll also score a shedload if you get him up for every set piece.

Seems to me that the key to the game this year is attacking play. Through balls and long shots are absurdly effective, as are lightning quick strikers.

Yeah exactly the same as me, I really doubted myself and changed my tactic a couple of times (which obviously doesn't help). Thing just didn't go well, but I figured it was the games way of doing things and not my faults. Anyway this year things are massively different with my players.

So I also confirmed that my tactics on the whole are good but my strengths are finding the best and right players for the tactic at bargain prices (no cheating also). The only time on this version where I've created something extraordinary was when I went balls out attacking and played 4-2-1-3 with Newcastle, in my second year I won the prem, in my third year I won the treble and had Ageuro, Kaka, Balotelli etc.

Well I signed him as backup to Dunne and Hangeland but Dunne has been injured so far and he's stepped in brilliantly.

I try not to sign attackers that don't have an amazing physical.

any suggested (english) team to start a new game with .. united is too easy

I'm playing as Wrexham at the moment, started in the Blue Square Premier. Tough job, but enjoying it. Up to League One now(2 promotions in 3 seasons), and on the cusp of the play off zone mid-season.

But then I don't tend to play as the bigger teams for very long.

i played with bury with the older patch .. got players on loan from the prem league and it wasnt that tough ..
wrexham it is then .. hopefully united wont loan me fabio and possebon in my first season :p

Does anyone have a download link for this that actually works properly. Like no injuries every game and Strikers not being able to score.

This is FM2008 but I'll stick it in here anyway (my laptop likes 2008 more than 2009...)

Played as Southend United. Signed no one in the summer transfer window just after I started, and Foran and Leon Clarke formed a lethal strike parntership. I was playing Kerrea Gilbert (on loan from Arse) at RB, and my backup RB Lewis Hunt had a whinge so I decided to give him a game - and he socred from halfway. Signed Alex Fernandez (striker) and George O Callaghan in the winter window - O Callaghan immediately said he wanted to play every game and that I should build the team around him, but in fairness he justified that by giving me a mass amount of assists and goals from him attacking midfield playmaker role. Fernandez got a hat trick in his first game but then failed to score for like 15 games and then demanded a rest.

Won the Johnstone paint Trophy, and then was in a good position for playoffs until I lost two in a row, and was 8th with one game left. Mathematically I could have come 6th still, but the team above me was playing the team in 22nd. So that didn't work.

I'm now in my second summer transfer window and looking for signings

(and how the feck do I schedule friendlies? I never knew how before and I'd like to find out now because im sick of starting each season with fat players)

go to fixtures and then arrange friendly, or get your assistant to do so in the manager opstions.

Just let the assistant do it.

I'm currently playing FM2007. Top of the Blue Square South with Havant & Waterlooville. Tearing the league apart - happy days.
