Florian Wirtz | Leverkusen player

Banter aside I think there is a possibility he ends up at Bayern but it isn't highly probable. Most reports say you eye him but think he'll be too expensive as you won't go all in since you want to build a team around Musiala. And last summer, you had to sell a few players before making the next transfers, suggesting you operated without huge reserves. Add to that that your squad in midfield and defense is very thin and you need to sign at least one starter at CDM, probably on the winter already, I don't see that you'll be willing to pay what we'll ask and possibly you won't even have that much even if you were primcipally ready to put the money on the table.

That aside, I don't have the impression that you'd be his first choice. That would be Barca or Pep I think.

I would probably stop following Bundesliga for a season or two if he ended up at Bayern, though. So I'm definitely biased
We wanted to spend 65 millions on Palhinha on deadline day and i think we will get him in the winter (or an alternative for a similar price) so our problems in CDM will hopefully be sorted soon.

For Wirtz i can imagine we would pay around 100. If City or someone else will pay significantly more than this, we will be out.

Has he ever said anything about which clubs he prefers?
He said that he always was a Barca fan and can imagine playing for them.
According to the BILD (who are most of the times very well informed about Bayern transfers) Wirtz and his father both like Bayern very much.

Has he ever said anything about which clubs he prefers?
It doesn't matter which clubs he prefers, unless he runs down his contract. At this point it is a matter of which club is willing to spend big on him next summer.

I don't think 100m will be enough for us to let him go to a direct competitor when he still has three years on his contract. And isn't you paying 60m for a CDM (and possibly a RB and CB backup) rather making it less likely you'll be able to even pay 100m for an AM than more likely?

Personally my money is on City. That is if Alonso is staying. If not, I say he'll be off to Madrid.

Unfortunately I agree with this.

Regarding Bayern: If Bayern buys a DM (and it is looking very likely) then IMO the only option to make a setup work is if they sell Kimmich or Musiala. And they are not doing that.
This isn't supposed to mean "Bayern says no to Wirtz." I don't regard them as his prefered option - only if he wants to stay in Germany.

Where does he play in Madrid?
I dont see a position for him at Bayern either. At city Maybe Pep will take the money for Bernardo and splash on Wirtz

Rüdiger Militao Alaba
Carvajal Tchouameni Camavinga Mendy
Bellingham Wirtz
Mbappe

Same formation as Alonso is playing in Leverkusen

That would mean Madrid sidelining Vini, Rodrygo, Guler, Valverde and Endrick. Not impossible, but hard to see, particularly Valverde and Vini who have good connections with the fans. Would be pretty ruthless, but if anyone can manage that, it would be Madrid.

Edit: especially when both fullback positions will likely need near term replacements as well.

Leverkusen's setup is dictated by Frimpong (and since this season also Grimaldo), I'd wager Carvajal and Mendy aren't considered formation-shaping players for Madrid.

Because Musiala is not an option out wide anymore - or what's the reason?

Vini, Valverde Rodrigo?. You wont bench Vini one of the best wingers in the world would you

It was just a spontaneous formation, you could field Vinicius in as well, the same way Alonso sometimes plays Adli instead of one of the CBs to form a 3-2-4-1 formation in possession:

Militao Rüdiger Alaba
Tchouameni Camavinga
Carvajal Bellingham Wirtz Vinicius
Mbappe

There are countless variations of this. You could even drag Bellingham back into CM like he played for Dortmund and play Wirtz behind two strikers Vinicius and Mbappe. Or in possession one of the fullbacks rotates into CM and Bellingham pushes forward like Alonso sometimes does with Grimaldo. The only thing that's consistent in all line ups is the 3-2 foundation and a box midfield but within that frame every formation is possible.

I fail to make a setup with Palinha, Musiala, Kimmich, Wirtz, Kane and wingers work.
But Wirtz is not coming so it is a pointless exercise.

Opened this thread because I just watched that goal he scored. Brilliant. But what is with all these assumptions

If we lucky we get Alonso and even that is not a given. No chance at Wirtz, don’t think Flo will spend a bunch of money on yet another midfielder. So you’re safe from us in that regard. Dunno about City or other teams though.

Well, the debate started with me saying that if Alonso does move to Madrid in the summer, they might be in the pole position for him and a poster claiming that they couldn't fit him in. If it were up to me, he stys with us until he retiees ;)

But he'll move this summer or the next. And as for Madrid, the club was linked with him the most this year. Fabrizio Romano tweeted just yesterday that there is much interest from La Liga and as Barca is reportedly already out that only leaves Madrid.

it's not that hard imo, I like Coman and Gnabry but they are a clear level below the other guys in attack

Option 1, my preferred one and in my opinion an absolute CL favorite:
----------------------Kane--------------------
Musiala----------Wirtz-----------Sané
-----------Palhinha--Kimmich---------
Davies--Kim--de Ligt--Mazraoui

Option 2, the Leverkusen system:
------------------------Kane--------------------
-------------Musiala---Wirtz-------------
Sané--Palhinha--Kimmich--Mazraoui (or Coman)
--------Kim----de Ligt---Upamecano----

Certainly even more attacking with Sané (and Coman) as wingbacks, but I think with a double pivot of Palhinha and Kimmich in front of that back three it could work

Option 3, Kimmich gets sold to Man City:
----------------------Kane--------------------
Coman-------------------------------Sané
-------------Musiala---Wirtz-------------
--------------------Palhinha----------------
Davies--Kim--de Ligt--Mazraoui

Think he stinks of City personally. De Bruyne’s hamstring won’t ever be the same now at 32, it doesn’t seem Guardiola will ever trust Foden in midfield, and I don’t think the 2 midfielders they signed this summer are all that.

I see. Haven’t read any reports on Wirtz moving to us. Or maybe I have forgotten.

That being said we need other spots secured. Backs, RW and striker. Midfield not a concern for now.

I can see City/Bayern. But from what I have seen of Leverkusen he might not be the only one. Fear you lot are gonna get the treatment all clubs get when they have a brilliant season. Thinking Boniface (Chelsea?) and Frimpong are high on the shopping list of other clubs.

Is he better than Bruno?
He is definitely more composed and less "moany" then Bruno. He wouldn't lose the ball half as often as Bruno for sure, while actually being able to create chances on his own. I'd consider him an upgrade right now.

@Zehner can you compare him to Foden? (Apart from the same goofy haircut of course)

I don't really think so but I haven't seen Foden live that much to be honest. I'd say Wirtz gets you off your seat more often and has the certain x factor but that's subjective I guess. Looking at stats, Wirtz seems much more integral to our play than Foden for City. He is on the ball more often, plays more passes with higher accuracy, dribbles more, progresses the baĺl more, creates more chances, scores more, etc

Think he has City written all over him. KDB declining and he is pretty much perfect player to take over his role. Pep is gonna love him.

So he was just voted Bundesliga Player of the Month for the second time this season. Think this deserves a bump ;)

Here's a nice, fast paced compilation of his year 2023. A few more recent scenes like his great solo vs Stuttgart and the nice lob against Frankfurt are still missing but it still gives a good impression of his season so far:

A few stats for context:

He's also 5th for total sprints among all Bundesliga players and 19th for total running distance.

Smells like a city player, but I desperately hope is the sort of player we start getting. Would take Bruno’s place in the team. We should be building a midfield around him, Mainoo and either a 6 or an 8, because I can see Mainoo filling either too. I’d certainly take Onana and Wirtz this summer to pair with Mainoo. And I’d happily cash in on Bruno. I love the guy but he doesn’t treat the ball with any care, and I think we have to move away from him.

If we could only get one transfer done in the summer it would be this guy, he's the type of player you can build a very successful team around for the next 10+ years.

Problem is that we can get him, but we have another 5+ holes to fill and no money for them then.

Considering Bayern have Musiala he will probably end up at City. Lovely little player who i would love to see us sign especially with Bruno ageing and becoming more erratic but pretty much zero chance we sign him.

is fbref that reliable? Every player I check seems to be superbly ranked

I think he's really good but also bundesliga tax, so who knows. He looks agile/explosive enough at least

Should be City, Arsenal or Liverpool i think

So far I had no reason not to believe it ;) They include all players from top 5 leagues, so roughly 100 teams. Assuming each team has played 5 different AMs/wingers, Wirtz has to be among the top 5 to be above 99% but only top 50 to be above 90%. Sounds legit to me.

That aside, people will only link those stats when there is something to show which might contribute to the impression that every player is highly rated

He looks like a very interesting player, could maybe do with some physical development still but looks very clever already.

Would imagine he will end up at Bayern or city anyway. We are stocked in his position on the pitch (with quality or not is up for debate), not that he would likely be interested in United at this stage anyway.

He's been on the radar of all Europe's top clubs for a while now but wanted to stay put until after the Euros at least.
I think there will be a lot of competition for him if he finishes the season well and has a good tournament.
There's always the possibility that someone like Real might nip in first and tie up the deal in advance like they did with Bellingham though.
