Final: Italy vs England

I was more nervous as a United fan leading up to the finals of 99 and 08.
I want England to win because I really like this team but I'm not at all nervous.

For me it's United over England but I'm well aware I might not see this again in my lifetime and whatever the result it's been a great tournament for England and the country so far. Just hope we can get over the line. Especially after the disappointment of the Europa final!
Likewise!

United always before England. Same in cricket. Lancashire always comes first.

I'm pretty disappointed with the line-up if rumours of Trippier starting are correct. Basically, he's putting 7 players out on the pitch who are defenders first. It's Wembley be brave!

It'll be a day of national celebration. People will be walking around with a smile on their faces. The city centres and shops will be full of happy people. And everybody will be singing the same handful of songs over and over ad infinitum.

So Christmas in July, basically.

I'd love England to win because it'll bring the nation together and make everything feel like a dreamland for a week or two.

But it's ultimately not that important to me.

Shaw, Maguire, Stones, Trippier, Walker, Rice, Phillips, Mount. In a single team.

In a European final, quite possibly one of the most negative team selections I have ever seen. Sterling and Kane are going to need to work miracles
I agree!

It's immediately saying to the Italians we're scared of conceding.

To be honest Sults I would have liked to have seen the front three with Sancho/Grealish - Kane - Sterling however it looks like Mount will get the nod to drop in centrally.

I can see why he's done it but being United fans we want attacking football!

I think the first goal is so important today given how Italy will want to approach the game. If we can go all out early on; high energy, pressure and aggression, then nick the early goal we have a chance. If Italy get it though they'll look to do us on the counter and they'll be difficult to break down.

I think whoever scores first wins it.

Is this the biggest game of all time for English United fans ?

Yes. The whole country will be at a standstill tonight, people who don't even like football will be watching the game tonight and England winning the Euros will be massive for all the country, major competitions at international level goes a level beyond the Champions League for me and I'm sure even footballers themselves will say the same thing. Look at all the shit Messi got all these years "he's not won anything for Argentina", it's like what he's done for Barcelona and in the Champions League doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things when comparing a players legacy to past legends, it seems to be all about what you do for your country 1st and foremost and that is how you are remembered the most.

The only thing that can top this would be England reaching the World Cup final.

World Cup>Euros>Champions League>Premier League.

If England win this, it puts Declan Rice on par with Messi and Ronaldo with one continental title each at international level.

Obviously, neither of the other two is anywhere near as good at tackling so it's an unfair comparison on them.

It's bigger for the neutrals and non-football "fans" but I think 99 and 08 were still bigger. This is a bigger occasion but I doubt many would trade our wins then for a win tonight.

you realise being jabbed isn’t supposed to make you stop catching the virus right? it just helps you defend against the symptoms.

people seem to think once they get 2 jabs you can’t catch it for some reason. anyway get better soon!

Not entirely correct.

Both Pfizer and AstraZeneca offer some protection against transmission of the virus, and yes, empirical evidence suggests those infected having been vaccinated are less likely to suffer severe symptoms or require hospitalisation.

Rice could fill in at CB, but not Messi, so I’d say they’re even as footballers.

I think it’ll be an interesting game.

England have by far the better players but Italy has the better manager by a country mile.

IMO if England win tonight then it’ll be due to our players superior skill and athleticism . . and if we manage to lose tonight then it can only be down to whoever sanctioned a blunt tool like Southgate.

Shouting for England but the match will be brutal to watch i feel. England are setting up to score a free kick or corner. Italy can score goals but will find it difficult to break down England. Good chance it goes to penalties.

All my family are at Wembley. Let's hope with the way social distancing is lost on most today they don't bring Covid home instead of football coming home.

Yeah, I'm not nervous, it's great to be alive while we've got to a final and have a chance of winning it. Such a rare thing you have to savour it and hope for the best. Took England 55 years and I've seen 4 of those decades.

I think they would. Scottish/Irish/Welsh United fans (fans from any country) would say the same thing if Scotland/Wales/Ireland was in a final too.

Maybe you don't realise it, but once you are there you do, the love for your country (and knowing what it will mean for your country) goes a level above club in my opinion and as said I'm sure it does for many players too, there's talk of a bank holiday if England win this, that stuff doesn't happen with club football or within the city who win the Champions League, that is how big and important this game is.

I’m English and an England fan

But looking at this with my head, how are England favourites?! Italy haven’t lost in God knows how long and have a much better XI. Weird odds.

11/10 on skybet for Italy to win the tie. I feel like I’m missing something. A couple of days on English food and the Italians will get a stomach bug?
They don't have a much better XI at all and England are at home. That's it.

16 months worth of missed Friday and Saturday nights condensed into one afternoon. We were always going to get the worst (and best) of people in events like these.
But they've always been like this !
England fans have been despised long before covid.

Imagine losing the pace of Sancho/Saka against ageing defenders or the mastery of Grealish for Trippier?

you can’t argue hypothetical situations rationally…

Would I swap 2008 for a win tonight - hell yeah.

If these leaks are true on England's team and could be as these leaks have got out and proven to be true hours before England's previous games, it makes me wonder who keeps leaking them.

Fingers crossed, its a fake leak to mess with Italy's gameplan.

I'm really hoping that's not true.

Whilst I applaud Southgate for getting us this far, it hasn't exactly been via a tactical masterclass. The Italians could run away with it early if they click into gear before we do, and we all know Southgate struggles with a plan B during games.

I think the general response from these lot is they don't care (what people think of them) and if anything they revel in that reputation.

It's also like 1% of actual England fans.

The 99% who go to enjoy the game don't get in the news and have no reason to.

Yes these people acting up are twats, but most England fans aren't represented here.

For me this is bigger just because we've never seen us win anything and might never get the chance again. With United I'm sure there will be plenty more Champions League finals in my lifetime.

As soon as England have won one though, it's back to United > England.

Really?! Can't relate to that. I suppose being there in 2008 was one of the best night of my entire life. I couldn't possibly imagine that game going any other way just to see England win a Euros so many years later, just the thought of seeing Terry's penalty going in instead, then losing the following year and again in 2011, then ten years on to have been nowhere close to another CL final, horrific thought. I'm so excited for tonight, but it doesn't feel anywhere close to the same as a big Utd game.

I'm more nervous and excited for a league game against Liverpool than I am for this England game to be honest. It all feels a bit weird and alien though, not used to us being here, in a final, it's so strange.

Agree
But anyone that thinks this is automatically seen as an antiengander. He's clearly playing it safe and looking to win this through set pieces through the delivery of Trippier.

You can think Southgate is a wolly without having getting insults thrown at you.

Can't believe I'm seeing people say they would trade one of our CL wins for England to win the fecking European Championships.

I actually think it makes sense to go defensive and keep it tight for at least the first 45 mins. The Italians looked knackered from about the 60 minute mark against Spain and put a lot into the 120.

And, unlike England, they don't have tons of quality on the bench.

So, keep it tight and make attacking subs to change the dynamic later.

Not exciting but seems sensible.

Agree with this!
