Film Film RedCafe's Favourite Movies Of All Time Contest (ROUND 4)

1. M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder
2. The Godfather
3. The Cook, the Thieve His Wife and Her Lover
4. Dogville
5. Taxi Driver

Just read @Dirty Schwein was in the hospital. Hope you feel better.

"You're an inanimate f*cking object" cracked me up
The apology afterwards is great as well.

“I want a normal gun for a normal person” or “I would never hit a woman. I would hit a woman who was trying to hit me with a bottle, that self defence.”

Great choices at 1 and 4 there. I was thinking about M for my own list actually.

I loved that film but I haven't seen it recently and I wonder how well it has aged?
It’s so wonderfully weird, I think it’s timeless and easily holds up.

1: City of God.
2: Casino.
3: Godfather.
4: Silence of the lambs.
5: Dog Day afternoon.

M is one of those movies I think everybody should see at least once. It’s amazing to me how relevant it still is, despite being from 1931. And even though I rate Metropolis very highly, I think M is Fritz Lang‘s best work.

And the interesting thing about you mentioning Dogville is how completely different those movies access the question of guilt and what it really is. They couldn’t be more different in that regard.

The alcoves.
The way the dealer says dum dums will always be very funny to me. The guy makes it sound like a type of small chocolate treat and not bullets that explode heads.

Also Brendan Gleason character is has some killer lines.
Ken: Your girlfriend's very pretty.

Jimmy: She ain't my girlfriend. She's a prostitute I just picked up.

Ken: I wasn't aware there were any prostitutes in Bruges.

Jimmy: You just have to look in the right places... brothels are good.

Ken: Well, you've picked up a very pretty prostitute.

Jimmy: Thank you.

Such an amazing film. Me and my mates quote it all the time.

"have a couple more c**t kids...."

Tough one this, there's so many..

1. Godfather 2
2. Heat
3. True Romance
4. GodFather
5. Point Break

This one is such a tough round to narrow down to 5.

I think I'm going with -

1. Blue Velvet
2. A History of Violence
3. Taxi Driver
4. LA Confidential
5. The Usual Suspects

I think this might change again though...

Yeah, it's a true classic, both in terms of enduring quality and the influence it has had. (To the point where you can't see it anymore because its influences are everywhere and considered basic now.)

I'm not sure I would put it here actually, maybe rather drama. But it caught my eye because it's so awesome and unique, and yet it's mentioned relatively rarely (in things I read, anyway).

Really need a few more votes. 4-8 are all pretty much tied so don't wanna use metacritic scores...

There are too many to choose from, but I'll go for...

1. Seven
2. Heat
3. Goodfellas
4. Once Upon a Time in America
5. Pulp Fiction

Sexy Beast is a surprisingly good movie, reminded me a bit in tone of some of Ballard's later works like Super Cannes

Edit - Whatever happened to Jonathan Glazer?
Seems to have done some apple adverts since Under The Skin and a short film called Strasbourg 1518

Also seems he is making a WW2 holocaust film.

Quality genre.
getting 5 films in this genre, is hard so many good ones, but even so there is a few that have risen to the top and stand out.
Tbh I thought the sci fi was going to be the most difficult but with genre there just some many great films on the same level. Could pretty much just pick 5 Michael Mann films and it would be top list.

1. Goodfellas
2. Pulp Fiction
3. Heat
4. The Departed
5. The Godfather: Part II

Difficult.

Quite a few Chinatown selections - wouldn't the amended Thriller/ Mystery round be a better fit for that?

I’d argue Chinatown is peak Neo-Noir in the same fashion as No Country For Old Men is peak Neo-Western.

Sci-Fi and Horror for me, going to be tough to pick 5 in each.

1 - 12 Angry Men
2 - Prisoners
3 - Spotlight
4 - Inside Man
5 - Seven
