So where does the 10 mil someone mentioned earlier come from? Is this the loan fee then?

Fair play getting £10million for him.

I enjoyed watching him play when he was at Liverpool. It's unfortunate that he went down hill so quickly.
Very strange business to go from absolutely brilliant to pretty crap more or less overnight.

Hope he gets back to his best now that hes in no position to damage our season in any way.

I would love to see him get back to his best. When he was at Liverpool he was one of the best I'd ever seen...and then he just crashed. I'll never understand why but I suppose it's probably a mental issue. He terrified me, I absolutely hated it when he was playing against us.

Vidic was his bitch, too.

I understand the wages issue, my query is more about the original £50 million transfer fee being amortized over the length of his contract. £50 million / 5 years =£10 million a year. If we had let him go on a free with 2 years left on his contract, our FFP figures would look a lot worse than if we loan him with his wages paid by someone else. At least I think that's the issue.

That makes sense. If you sell him now, you have to record a loss if the fee is below his book value (e.g. book value of 20m - 10m fee=10m loss). With a loan deal, the asset remains on your balance sheet and you will record depreciation over the remaining years (10m each year), with the loan fee offsetting the depreciation this year. The overall result is the same (you lose 10m), but you defer the loss to next year.

people talk about the 18months or so Torres has a real top player as if that was his natural level, and the rest was some magical decline.

they don't think, maybe that was his normal level, and the 18months was the exception to the rule.

Reminds me a bit of Valencia. he had incredible form for a while, was the best winger In the league. Then just fell back to a cautious, slowing the play type, who never made the right decision, and lost any ability to cross.

Was he? Or did he shut him out for about 90% of the games, and just had the 3 bad games he got sent off in.

This.

I don't think Torres was even at Liverpool in one of the games where Vidic was sent off against them.

Hernandez always seemed to score against Chelsea but nobody ever said John Terry was Hernandez's bitch.

I've always said that Torres was absolutely made for the premier league and especially United. Fergie apparently watched him since he was 16 and it's no secret he put a few bids in for him over the years. As we all know, he went to Liverpool where he was outstanding for a while. Moving to Chelsea was the worst move he could have ever made. I know he often played up front on his own for Spain and in his last season or two for Madrid, but Chelsea's style REALLY doesn't suit him.. Anywhere would have been better for him than Chelsea, and especially as they always preferred Drogba up front. He would have been absolutely outstanding for United. He would have thrived off the fast, direct and aggressive wing play and thrived with someone like Rooney alongside him. Ronaldo, Giggs, Scholes Rooney and Torres would have been lethal.

In my opinion he WAS right up there with some of the best finishers I have ever seen. He was deadly, full of tricks, had a fierce shot and was very skilful. A joy to watch when he was on form. I'm not so certain Milan is the best place for him, but maybe the slower tempo might suit him a bit better. Whatever, I wish him luck and would love to see him at least regain some of his confidence and start playing well again. Ex Scousehampton or not, he was at one time a true credit to watch play in the premier league.

Do you not remember how we were in for him and plenty of people were gutted Liverpool signed him? He was very very good, certainly one of the best I've seen so to compare him to Valencia is a little bit mad!

Petr Cech was Hernandez's bitch

Football exists outside of the PL and Torres was very good for Atletico before joining Liverpool.

Milan really trying their best to create a freebie XI and a bench to go along with it

I have mixed feelings towards Torres. He has a dodgy dribbling technique, always has. He was very good at being in the right position at the right time for pool but as an all round footballer I have never rated him. He was quick and strong (he did give Vidic nightmares tbh) but his technique for dribbling, shooting and passing isn't good enough. He is like Muller imo.

Torres shooting technique was great at one time. His dribbling sorta consisted of a big touch, head down and just beat any defender for pace.
Disagree with Muller, his technique is very good, combined with a genius brain.

I'm reading that the reason it's a 2 year loan is because that's more beneficial to Chelsea FFP-wise than simply giving him a free transfer.

DOes that make sense to anyone with a better grasp of FFP than a dimwit like myself?

If Chelsea sell him then they'd have to A) pay some of his wages and B) Pay him a fee for selling him, rumoured to be £8 million. By loaning him they avoid paying the £8 million fee and probably actually pay very little of his wages if the loan fee is low.

Seriously though I keep asking myself what happened to him. Was it a psychogical problem or what?
Or he just wasnt that good, just had a few good seasons where everything worked for him.

I dont know..

We decided not to buy him as he didn't score enough goals.

such a predictible transfer... they did the same with their last expensive flop, who didn't score a single goal when they loaned him to Milan  of course, I'm talking about Shevchenko.

Shame to see such a great club resorting to signing players of this standard.

But I do hope he does well. He must feel such a complete loser to have gone from being so brilliant to a complete laughing stock.

Once Torres lost his pace, he really didn't have any fallback option to beat a defender. It went downhill from that, his pace contributed and made up for his lack in other areas. His finishing suffered due to being low on confidence which he never got over.
