Fernando Torres

I don't think the second part is true. At times he still looks lightning. I think he still has the pace, he just either can't use it or get in a situation to do so often enough.
His performance vs city at home last season was a great game from him. He did very well to recover from a bad miss early on. He ran at defenders and they struggled to deal with him in that match. That was a performance definitely worthy of the torres of old. Sadly he could not capaitalise on it and reverted back to what we have begun to expect of him over the last few years.

Hmm, you're in a better position to judge obviously, but everytime I've seen Torres over the last few years he's looked a shadow of the lightning quick player we first saw in the PL. Obviousy he's no Berbatov, and he still has speed, but just not that ridiculous speed he once had. He used to constantly burst away from defenders over and over and leave them for dead. He just doesn't, or can't do that anymore. Defenders seem to catch up with him pretty easily nowadays.

Personally, I don't think its a mental thing with Torres. I think his body just can't do the things he wants it to do anymore.

Yes I know. I referred to that when I mentioned injuries took their toll on him. That is why I said if he wants to be a "good player again" and that if he stays at Chelsea he will never be "even above average again" as at Chelsea he has been average at best. I think if he went to a small club in spain and played regularly like I said in my previous post then he could score 15 league goals which would be considered "good" (not world class or as you called it top level) and a massive improvement on what he has done in recent years. But I agree that he will never be world class again.

Who do you reckon in Spain would take him (and be able to pay his wages)? Obviously Real/Barca wouldn't, and I don't think he's good enough for Athletico anymore.

Jaysus.. I know it's only a pre season game but what happened to that man. Lethal once upon a time.

One of modern footballs great mysteries..

We shouldnt celebrate such a seismic loss of form, but..

Talk about a player being carried by his team(s). This is what he's won since he left Liverpool:
And as far as i can remember, his last season at Pool was pretty poor, aswell as his performances in the 2010 World Cup - which he got a winners medal.

So you can possible say he was carried by the Spanish team at the 2010 WC too.

He's won the biggest trophies in football (apart from the Prem) & was a passenger in all of it!

There is no team. That is why I said in my first post that he wont go back to spain as he would have to take a massive pay-cut. If he was willing to take the pay-cut I am sure there would be plenty of teams that would be willing to take him.

Surely Atletico would take him as a Villa replacement? Not as the main man but as some extra firepower to deploy next to him or from the bench if necessary.

They could do but I am sure it would mostly be due to the fact that he played for them before and there would probably be a big sentimental deal made of it in the media. I think at this moment atletico could afford much better back-up strikers than torres (which isn't saying much tbh).

Yeah it was, but that first half of the season was the Hodgson disaster season so he took a lot of the blame. He also finished the previous season with a bad injury and spent the summer recovering so it was expected he'd have a slow start to the season.

Indeed.

Beast of a player back in the day, didn't look forward to facing Liverpool with him there. Made a show of Vidic back in 08/09, leagues best centre half at the time. Real fear factor with Torres back then.

Ye his last season wasn't great at Liverpool, wanted to move after the World Cup but they keep ahead till January. Wasn't great either but he did get a brace against Chelsea before the move.

His move to Chelsea never saw the form return, but his cabinet did get some new shiny medals. CL season what exactly did he contribute? The second goal against Barcelona and in the EL winning season a few goals. As for euro 2012, he finished top scorer but wasn't convincing.

He finished at the top level of course, a shadow of his former self.

He did indeed Red, but he finished on top with 5 other players with 3 goals a piece though..

Hodgson got alot of grief alright..

It was also funny to hear Pool fans say (after he signed for Chelsea); that Torres had to be sold because he was cack for the last 18 months of his time at Pool..

What club would take him? Surely no elite European clubs. Maybe a Tottenham or Everton level club?

Indeed, googled it their beat Gomez on account of minutes played.. and two of his strikes were against Ireland in the group stage and we are hardly the benchmark for Int.Football.
I think that when it comes to a tie-breaker they use who has more assists as well. It really did make a mockery of the award tbh. He didn't even feature vs Portugal in the semi-finals and only came on in the final when spain were two-nil up against ten man Italy. I remember reading on goal.com a very funny mock article back then calling him the best striker in the world as the team he plays for always wins (ie Chelsea that year and then spain) and also calling him the best "false nine".

Its not about his pace or explosiveness its about his composure, he makes Welbeck look like a professional archer.

He can be practically on the goalline yet still not make the ball enter the goal. Plus every time he gets in a position he never ever ever ever seems to make the right bloody decision, he always seems to do something wrong. Thats why he is so infuriating, you feel like yelling at him 'Torres for feck sake whatever you are about to do, DONT, just do the complete opposite.'

Jaysus man - dont mentioned Ireland & Euro 2012 in the same sentence. Actually, lets never talk about Euro 2012 ever again.

I'd bunting all over the gaff (tri-colours outside the house) & those wing-mirror covers on the car etc.. Everyone was at it in Dublin - great spirit behind the team.

By the end of the 2nd match - Dublin had the biggest bonfire i've ever seen.. :(

He's a true "number 2" thats for sure..

It's all good, he'll score two goals against a relegation candidate in September and Redknapp and co will proclaim that the old Torres is back.

He's an absolute mystery, he used to be as lethal as anything...then just...simpered into nothingness.

That goal against Barca is about the sum of his chelsea career. I guess he'll take it though considering what happened.

What happened to this guy. Maybe mentally he wasnt strong enough. I mean those misses are funny but when you come to think of it its a sad story how his career has gone from one of the best strikers out there to laughing stock of europe..

It's the leaving Liverpool in your mid 20's as a top class striker curse. Fowler left, by the time he was back there he was barely over 30 but was well past his best. Owen left and became more injury prone than Bran Stark, then Torres left and turned to shit. If Suarez struggles at Barca, then there's something strange going on.

Yeah it's sad the way his individual career has gone, but what's ridiculous is that he still has a ton of winner's medals; World Cup, Euros, Champions League, FA Cup; apart from the Premier League, he's won pretty much all there is to win. Yet he was at his best when he was winning nothing with Liverpool.

Despite all this tropheys and despite his downfall as you said he has won a lot, I think he will be remembered as a striker who was once good but then became half a player he was...

He has singularly failed to adapt his game to take into account the changes in his role and body after injury.

Still tries to play like he is 18.

He should just bugger off to the MLS or A-League.

I think mentally it's a comination of his body failing him so he can't possibly be the player he once was and the thought of playing in the Prem against defenders that'll make whatever might be ailing him worse.

Liverpool made him into the player he could be, but he became a victim of that. Battered by defenders, no help from referees and then they played him when he was injured all the time because they had nobody else to score goals. Ruined him, just like they did Michael Owen.

Tbf he was around for a long time. He has good seasons at atletico too before he moved to Liverpool and he has done well for spain also (wc 06, euro 08) so I think that he has done enough to be remembered for the good seasons and moments that he has had in his career rather than just what has happened since his last half season at Liverpool and his whole Chelsea career. He has been playing top flight football in la liga for atletico since 2002 and has had much more good seasons than bad ones. Maybe to someone who only watches the premiership would he be remembered the way you said he would. I definitely believe his career will be looked back at in a very positive light by the majority of people. Over the last decade or so there has not been many strikers better than him at his best.

I know bud.. Was up for big time first major tournament since Japan/Korea and what a bleedin disappointment.

We always do pal, amongst the best in the world. The boys that went Poland/Ukraine were still singing at 4-0 to Spain. If Carlsberg did supporters..

Still though France in two years, new management. Delighted to see Keano in the fold and looking at the group the Germans will top it, that leaves us,Poland, and Scotland. I reckon we could qualify if We get our act together. On a side note Poland/Ireland at the Aviva should be decent. There will be killings

The way he keeps missing, Chelsea will soon have to offer clubs money to take him.
