Apologies for reporting this as the source is really questionable but the story does have a track record:

Manchester United Agree Deal to Sign Tough Tackling Brazilian Midfielder Fernandinho According to Italian Reports

According to Italian source CalcioMercato Man United have reached an agreement with Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk to sign highly rated midfielder Fernandinho.

The 27 year old box to box operator is into his eighth season at the Donbass Arena and may well feel he has achieved as much as he can in Ukraine and would certainly jump at the chance of a move to Old Trafford.

The tough tackling Shakhtar midfielder has had a splendid season this term, helping his side to a 13 point lead at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League as well as guiding Mircea Lucescu’s side into the last 16 of the Champions League with some fine displays.

Fernadinho has come in for a lot of praise during the Champions League group stage, where Shakhtar edged out Chelsea to secure qualification with the Brazilian international being especially eye-catching in the club’s win over the West London side in early November.

Sir Alex Ferguson may well be keen to freshen up his midfield and could feel that the addition of Fernandinho could help harden his first-team’s ‘soft centre’ that has been all to easily breached, leaving his off-colour defence struggling to stem the tide.

With Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs nearing the end of their glittering careers and Darren Fletcher easing himself back following illness the addition of Fernandinho could help strengthen the club’s midfield.

The former Atlético Paranaense would join fellow Brazilians Fabio, Rafael and Anderson at Man United should he indeed make the move, which this source states could be in the summer rather than this month.

The story has been reported in other sources eg Mirror, Mail, but that was just to report possible United interest.

Its probably BS but your can never tell.

I Posted this in the football forum but yes does appear to be something in this story.

Is he any good?

He was absolutely brilliant against Chelsea. Best player on the pitch by a mile.

Saw this link posted in the Twitter thread relevant to this "rumour".

Manchester United fans got excited on social networks this evening after news came through that they'd agreed a deal to sign Shakhtar Donetsk's Fernandinho. It was a claim that a deal had actually been done, rather than rumoured interest. The club had an agreement and Fernandinho would be on his his way to Manchester United.

Caught Offside carried it in this country and it's spreading across other news sources. However, everything refers back to an article on Calciomercato as a source. The Italian website, in full, posted the following:

Secondo la stampa inglese, il Manchester United avrebbe trovato un accordo con Fernandinho, 27enne centrocampista dello Shakhtar Donetsk. Ancora da definire, però, l'accordo fra i Red Devils e il club ucraino, così come le tempistiche dell'operazione: a gennaio o a giugno?

We don't need to translate that fully to shed light light on the confusion, because the first bit says 'According to the English press'. There are no reports in the English press, not even rumours prior to those relating to this Italian article. So we have English websites saying 'According to reports in Italy' and Italian websites saying the reverse.

The Calciomercato article itself says that an agreement has been made with the player but not his club, which is another reason to discount the whole thing.

It's an odd situation because at the beginning of September another Calciomercato article caused a stir, through no fault of their own that time. They did an article on Fernandinho without quotes and yet Talksport. claimed to have sourced one from them which said "I am closing a deal with an English club. I will play in Manchester in January".

Calciomercato didn't have those quotes and didn't at any point claim to have those quotes yet it was repeated in newspapers and on the TV without anyone even bothering to read the original article. Perhaps similar has happened here because Calciomercato are basing their news on reports in the English press which don't actually exist.

Welcome to the silly season.

Didnt he apparently say in the media somewhere that he was moving to manchester?

whether that was B.S though is most likely.

It does ring a bell.

I know nothing about him - so it does excite me a bit. With that being said, he won't be able to play in Europe for us this season so I don't see much point seeing as Fergie said we'd only strengthen if a player who could play in Europe came about.

Were those quotes about moving to Manchester traced to somewhere ? Don't think so.

We'd probably try to set up a deal for a Summer transfer anyway, Shakhtar need him for their Champions League campaign. When he said he was moving to Manchester I felt it was to City, I still do feel he'll end up there.

What sort of midfielder is he? Would he be able to cover for Carrick?

If he can play the same role as Carrick I think it'd still be worth it even knowing he can't play in the Champions League. It would allow Carrick to focus more on Champions League and we would have him to play in the EPL when games start getting tight.

I like him, he was superb against Juve and Chelsea.

I thought he was talking to City... Wouldnt be surprised if they got him.

He denied he said that this last week.

With Carrick and Cleverley coming along nicely so far this season, I don't feel any hint of the desperation I had for a CM last season. Still, it would be nice to have another option.

Pure limited DM would definitely be a solid inclusion into this squad. Especially with Fletcher not near 100% and available. Fletcher is closest to a tackling mobile midfielder we have when he is fit. Next in command is Michael Carrick and his game is completely different.

From what I've seen of him he doesn't look to be strictly a DM. He also gets himself forward and score the odd goal. Looks a bit more of an all rounder to me.

He reminds me of a more technically gifted ramires from chelsea.

He has that mad acceleration and stamina, but is a great passer too.

Never been completely convinced of his defending, but hes definitely more than a defensive player. Might be able to still find a video of his amazing long range free kick from a number of years ago. Also I agree he's a good passer and hes quick

Tancredi Palmeri ‏@tancredipalmeri 28m

Manchester City signed Fernandinho from Shaktar Donetsk for 23m £, according to Sky Italy. Signed back in january, only now revealed

Oops, back to their old strategy now of signing the players we want.

Yet another midfielder who could have improved us, but nope

To be fair not sure how he would fit in, perhaps he is back up for Toure?

Basically just a replacement for the last replacements they signed, Rodwell and Garcia, who were very disappointing.

Meh, nothing special and too old to have much prospect of significant improvement. A step up from Garcia, definitely, but I wouldn't want him.

I don't think he's all that good, Shakhtar had and have better players.

Santo ‏@Zizouology 2h

Fernandinho once said: "Financial opportunities of European clubs outweigh the means of Brazilian sides. Of course money is the main thing"

Will fit right in then.

I don't think he's all that good, Shakhtar had and have better players.

Who? He was aside Mkhitaryan and Willian (who left for Zenit) their most important player. I watched Donetsk a lot when they were drawn vs. Dortmund in the CL and he showed a lot of quality for them. He would strenghten a lot of the top teams, at least as an alternative.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I hate it when people pretend like money isnt important.

He has great stats from his Champions League performances!

Just saying like :nervous:

That's some ass talking right there. The dude is about to turn 28. He's in his prime as he showed in the CL this year. Would walk into our midfield quite easily. A rare all-round player of that caliber.

Fernandinho has rejected an offer of a new contract from Shakhtar and wants to leave.

Quotes in the Ukrainian press:

"When I signed for Shakhtar, the club's director told me that such a large release clause is normal for European football. He promised me that, in case there are negotiations about my future, it would be possible to negotiate a smaller transfer fee.

I trusted these people, since I was still naive, and didn't think about the consequences. My dream is now in danger because of the release clause in my contract, which is 50 million euro."

He is under contract until 2016.

Yes of course we al believe it was your dream whilst kicking a ball around in brazil to play for stockport.
