Fellaini (on his way) out? | Duncan Castles: Fellaini agrees new two year deal

It’s pretty obvious too me keeping Fellini means he will play a consider amount of game time, mourinho much like moyes and VG are the symptoms of the problem, but not the main problem. The cancer is our board, they don’t care about winning trophy’s has long has the money flows, even if it means Jose mourinho’s long ball stoke football. Get used to matic and fellaini in midfield, and the blame I put on the doorstep of the board who have allowed these managers to come in who haven’t a clue about this club and are allowing our neighbors to change the balance of power, which I will never ever forgive them for
The board splashed massive amount on Pogba but apart from that they're always usual suspects since the Glazer takeover. Sir Alex somehow managed and his last season was taking the league by a storm. There's a bit of an empty void even to this day in understanding how Manchester United should work as a whole. Woodward was waiting for someone like Mourinho for too long and now it seems Mourinho needs time understanding how the club works. No guarantees he will ever understand...

Appointment of LvG was a mistake in the end and for that it's definitely board's headache. Next month should answer a lot of questions, also third year of Mourinho will rule out many excuses of new manager coming to the club but the board can easily use Mourinho as a shield and dump entire blame on him and next managers. The vicious cycle.

I agree that Jose has to evolve himself. We have to find a way to get passed sides who just want to sit deep for the whole game, which doesn't involve just hoofing it to a big bloke and in most cases playing straight into the other teams hands anyway. We need someone who can cross a ball, in the air and on the ground and a dead ball specialist. If we can get someone who does both, all the better. We have pace up front but do not utilise it properly.
Sounds like you're describing Perisic and J.Rodriguez - two players we could and probably should have in our squad for a good year or two. This club's sometimes so slow with reforming itself. It seems like we're waiting to take the opportunities to get the players that at some point are even sending signs themselves to United - "come and get me".

Still time to fix things and avoid LvG scenario, I want to be positive but it's not that simple. Something needs to be done to stop United fanbase from being divided and giving the the logical reason behind believing in a title race.

If the other option to renewing Fellaini was to spend £40 million plus on a squad player with similar attributes then in my mind this is a sensible move!

Yes this is true. No point moving sideways and spending (probably) more money for the privilege. I would argue we should be bringing through younger players if that’s the case, but if we are switching to 433 then this is the better option out of the certainly probable scenario you outlined.

The first step is to replace the likes of Fellaini with better players. It doesn't really make sense to say we have to rely on shit players because we don't have good players. If so, we should sign those good players. A club with our resources should be able to do so.

But we are not doing it. Only De Gea & maybe Pogba qualify as world class players in the club. The other guy mentioned Barca, Real Madrid, Bayern, etc. These are clubs where every position is filled with super class players. Let’s be honest, we cannot compete.

I agree with the bolded part, tbf. If the alternative was to spend £50m on Arnautovic just to have similar physicality, then renewing his contract was a far better option.
Made the exact point in the other thread. That's one positive. Although it doesn't speak highly of our transfer business and scouting that we can't replace Fellaini, a 4th choice CM with little technical ability without spending 50mil. A like for like hoofball target should only be worth a fraction

meh, not bothered having him for another year as a squad player. Could still get a decent fee for him the year after
We will be lucky to shift him on for nothing. He will be nearly 32 and now at 30 clubs have hardly tripped over themselves to get him on a free. No, we will be stuck with him for the remainder of his contract.

No it's because some of us watch football as it is and don't conform to generalizations.

At this stage over 6 managers have trusted him by playing him in their starting elevens almost consistently throughout his career. The fans on here are the same fans that thought Cleverely was miles better than him. So now e don't rate him because of brownie points but because of actual results rather than opinions of the man at the pub or redcafe.

And how have those six managers fared btw during this period?

Jose obviously likes him in case of a plan B. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing looking forward to a new season.

Wow Fellaini, Jones, Smalling still at the club at the start of the season it really fills me with optimism for 18/19.

If you don't expect Smalling, our most reliable defender of the last 4 years, to be at the club come September... then the problem is with your expectations not with the club.

1 EL, 1 LC, runners up PL, FA Cup winners and runners up. Pathetic mate

He made five appearances last year as a starter so thats out, didnt start the fa cup either so thats out too.

Want me to check the other ones now or do you actually want to check your stats before going the pathetic mate route?

It's got to be sextapes or something hasn't it! -

Does he dress provocatively at team hotel, ply the manager with rohypnol and then do a switcheroo and get a lady of the night in an afro wig to do the business, tape them and then he uses the tape to extort his way onto the teamsheet!

:lol::lol:

I was talking about the managers not the player. I love how you single out the season he was injured a lot  great stuff!

Happy for Jose that he’s keeping his man; supporting your manager after you appoint him is the least a club can do, and that’s what we are doing.

If Fellaini is the type of player the manager we appointed wants in his team then there’s no point for those who disagree with that getting angry with the player or even the manager - it’s the club that has decided to go in this direction when they appointed the manager; the ultimate responsibility is with the club.

I wouldn’t be choosing to retain Fellaini personally, but I’ve not been appointed manager so my opinion doesn’t matter.

Young and Valencia as our starting wing backs too

Might as well not even bother next season and write it off now and I’m not even been sarcastic.

So he's keeping Fellaini and we're going to be starting with Young and Valencia as fullbacks also? Disgraceful. We're in for more of the same next season...

The fecking state of Mourinho...

How about you read the posts before jumping in to defend fellaini?
He's forever on a crusade to defend everyone who gets criticism, regardless of how bad they are. He doesn't care about Fellaini, he only cares about coming across as a top red.

He's fine as a 4th or 5th choice midfielder and a good option to throw on at 75 mins and needing a goal as long as his mere presence doesn't inspire everyone to go long.

As long as we don't use him in a deeper role then alright. I have no idea why José still occasionally uses him there - he's always out of his depth, getting overrun and doing silly fouls. Just keep him near the oppos box.

early days yet....

I would expect major activity in July as the World Cup comes to a close

if that's the case in August with the window closing I'd be very concerned

Fellaini will be 5th choice midfielder I hope and used only when necessary - it is acceptable if he extends the contract if the money is earmarked for quality additions

I would have liked to have seen Periera get an opportunity but I doubt we will see that now

Yeah we have some right weird lots over here but tbh I expect this from somebody who thought brendan rodgers was good enough for this club.

Yet we sign him on a two year deal, do you fail to see your logic?

The same biggest club in the world that signed david moyes. Then the same biggest club in the world that signed fellaini for MORE than what his release clause was like two days after it expired? Yeah you are right because we were stupid enough to sign fellaini again that makes him some great talent teams were fighting over him. There were maybe one or two small ass rumors about teams interested in this lumbering oaf. Oh and if it is more than 100k a week for this oaf? FFS.

Yup, same club that signed Bebe and other mistakes, but they were not resigned

Intriguing, probably free’s up more funds to spend on other areas but we have Fosu and Tuanzebe coming back who could have played in midfield. Mctominay can surely do the job of Fellaini. Just makes you wonder, if he was so dead cert on leaving what have united offered him to get him to stay.

Can't just be me that questions the regular reference to his work rate and 'spine'. He's been regularly found moping around, unable to track his runners from midfield - ultimately being responsible for goals conceded. The sort that Pogba would be fed to the dogs for.

Those who really like Fellaini really tend to inflate what he does well and reduce the expectations down to an almost bare minimum. Some eejit was objectively trying to argue this morning that he's been better than Herrera for three years - when actual game time witnessed shows he's been comprehensively outplayed and out picked in the biggest of matches, even by Mourinho of all people. I mean, he was generally poor when he played all of last season yet there's still some bizarre pretence to the contrary.

I don't mind having Fellaini around and I was always quick to support him when he received unfair criticism under both Mourinho and Van Gaal - go check. But now it's almost cool to like him.. and expectations have been lowered significantly. He's fecked us around for months and I was happy to see the back of him - and the Plan B that-never-works.

What the absolute feck is Mourinho thinking? When Fred signed he said he would give us that creative dimension and then he bollocks it all up by extending this prats contract. So he gets a two year pay rise for playing a handful of games over the next 2 seasons.

This transfer window is going downhill very fast.

Good news. People need to wake up and realise we do not have unlimited transfer funds.

Don't understand why people like to discredit this guy. I fully understand not liking this contract signing and believing he is not the direction we should go forward with but to say he contributed nothing is pathetic.
