Even Arsenal are strengthing with Torreira and possibly Banega. City will add Jorginho to a already world class midfield. Liverpool like you said with Keita and Fabinho. Honestly if we don't strengthen in the areas we need to I can see us falling behind the rest of the top teams. I can see us finishing 6th if we're still depending on the likes of Young, Valencia, Fellaini etc as key players.
He was injured for a big chunk of the season. I'm not saying he's going to be a starter but this notion that he's just going to be a bench option is wrong.

Those sides wouldn't want many of our players. We could lose Fellaini on a free, sign a £40m 'replacement' and still not have a midfield anywhere near as good as those sides. I'd rather we spent the funds elsewhere.

Well on second thoughts I think McTominnay, Herrera and Fellaini will alternate between 4th choice depending on the opponent and who they are replacing so some games he might be first off the bench if we're playing Liverpool and Matic is burnt out at 70 mins. But I think he wont get significantly more game time than the other 2 and that Matic Pogba and Fred will be ever presents.

None of them are remotely similar to Fellaini though. Mourinho wants him to play in a very specific role. He’s useful in certain types of games where we need an outlet and an aerial threat further up the pitch. We all know he isn’t going to be a starter and I’m really not fussed that he signed a new contract, especially when knowing that Mourinho was looking at spending money on players like Arnautovic to replace him.
