www.netflix.com

i split an account with two suitemates, such that we get three movies mailed to us at a time, and as soon as we're done, we send them back and get the next three movies that we've lined up. it costs about 5 bucks a person per month.

Can you rip them?

that's a fair point.

is it difficult to install/set up?

you have one, "bergo"?

I've got one. I've never used it, but now that I've networked my desktop and my Vaio laptop, I'm only one step away. That step being to buy some DVDs.

Not that I endorse lawyers/barristers breaking the law, but you can download ".iso" files of commercial DVDs to burn using Nero.

Close to 50 pages and 2000 posts and nobody has noticed that this thread, being in the general forum of Redcafe, is a total and complete oxymoron.

So it will end up in the classics no doubt.

Can't I burn films I've downloaded via torrents?

That was inherent in my original concept.

This thread is live art.

You torrent ".iso" files. They are bigger (about 4 gig) than the DivX and .avi files you've probably been downloading.

You can burn the others, too, but you need a DVD Authoring program as well, and the quality will not be as good.

Yes you can Slabs. But only in DVD quality if you downloaded pure DVD rips (usually around 4 GBs or more in size).

alonso, I have a Superdrive in my powerbook, it's a cd reader/burner + dvd reader/burner. Never burn dvd's though, I view all my media through my modded xbox (best investment ever) so I just transfer stuff to the 250gb harddrive in the xbox.

Ah...

That all sounds a little complicated.

But if I burn what I've got, will it at least be in the quality of what I've got?

Yes. But your TV (especially if it's an HD) will show up the artifacts more than your computer screen (unless your screen is an LCD one, in which case it will be the same).

It's a TFT monitor, or a Vaio screen, which is quite flash. I don't think that makes it LCD though, does it?

Vaio screen? Your telly?

No I mean I've watched the films on my TFT monitor and the screen of my Vaio, whatever that is. I'm wondering whether they are good enough to be similar to my telly (I'll have to get a new TV because currently I have a 17inch Toshiba from 1995).

Damn do you need a new telly.

your laptop has an LCD screen, all laptops do.

But about the movies you've downloaded, I really don't bother with downloading dvd quality stuff, it takes too long and if I really like something I'll buy the boxed set. So IMO you're fine with watching the 700-800mb sized rips.

Good. That's what I wanted to hear.

If I was that fussed, I wouldn't be watching a 10-yr-old 17inch TV.

Exactly.

I watch movies and episodes through my xbox on my 32" telly without really noticing artifacts. If it's a good rip it doesn't annoy you.

The advantage is that with that TV, the stuff will look better than on your LCD laptop. :)

My big debate in TV buying was making sure it could handle .avis without looking like a spazfestival. My old 30 inch standard TV hid everything really well, but most HDTVs really emphasised the flaws.

The new DLP chip, and Toshiba's video 'noise reduction' software in their new projection HDTVs does wonders.

And Slabber's eyes glazed over at the word "LCD"...

Slabber doesn't want a TV bigger then his cock, hence the 17 inch TV.

LCD, Plasma, flat screen, TFT, It all leaves me a little confused.

I get the impression LCD is the best.

Plasma theoretically gives a cleaner image, but it burns out over time. LCD can have an annoying "screen door effect" and the little dots can burn out, which is annoying as hell. Projection TVs can look a little 'soft'.

It's swings and roundabouts. When you buy a new one, do it at the shop not online, and take the one you think looks the best for you.

I still like projection TV's the best. Haven't really experienced fullblown HDTV though, but I've seen some pretty expensive Plasma TV's with runny colours, and LCD screens with annoying artifacts.

I'm in no hurry to buy a new telly (I have a rather cheapo 32" widescreen projection TV) although I probably will when I settle down in an apartment.

Slabber, what are you? (that is, what did you study/what do you want to be when you grow up)

He wanted to be male prostitute to the (female) stars.

He ended up a barrister.

Life is tough.

being an unemployed barrister is like selling your rectum for gay sex, but not receiving any money for it.
