Books Fantasy Reads

Yeah, no point crying. I've given up hope and now finally moved into acceptance!
Yeah but I can't totally give up hope. I'll just hope to read it when I'm 80.

I know he's been through some shit and nobody owes anyone anything but 10 years overdue is tough for a fan.

I mean, if we want to be upset, i guess we could all be feeling sick about Gaiman, too...

Opened up YouTube today for the first time in a week and holy shit, the Daniel Greene rollercoaster was one messy ride. I watch booktube channels from time to time to get ideas (when this thread is silent) and that place is melting down right now.

Perhaps someone in here can answer this for me. When I was younger I had a book that I did not finish that I’ve always wondered about. It may or may not have been part of a series. The general plot was the protagonist and everyone else living under a dome, I think unknowingly, and then him breaking out one day, and it was a blizzard outside. I don’t remember much else. It was medieval themed, but there was some modern technology, for example I think the protagonist was a farmhand, and had a robot bull to help with farm work.

From ChatGPT:

That sounds a lot like The Breaking of Northwall (1981) by Paul O. Williams, the first book in The Pelbar Cycle. This series is a blend of sci-fi and post-apocalyptic fiction with a medieval feel.

In The Breaking of Northwall, society has regressed to a medieval-like state after an unspecified catastrophe, and people live in walled cities (or domes) without understanding what lies beyond. The protagonist, a young man named Stel, eventually leaves his isolated society and ventures into the outside world, which is harsh and wintry.

The detail about a robot bull also suggests something similar to Jack Vance’s The Dying Earth setting, but your description best matches The Pelbar Cycle, where technology from the old world still exists but is misunderstood.

Rothfuss. I just want to read it before I die. Never enjoyed a book more than the first one.

Can ask ask what the book series is?
And should I even think about reading it by your comments?

I’m honestly a terrible reader, so need something to engage me quickly I think

I tried wheel of time but half way through the first book I just felt there was a lot of unneeded fluff

Quick edit. Figured it, sounds like maybe it’s best not to start it

It’s such a shame he’s a monumental prick that doesn’t give a shit about any of his readers.

I still think Books 1 & 2 are good enough to read.

Writers block is a real thing and I've seen other authors needing to step away to regain their creativity. Sometimes, it just doesn't work. I think in case of GRRM, he just gave up. For Pat, I still hold on hoping he'd get his mojo back and finish this.

That was nasty and toxic all around. I never liked creators like him from the get go and this has chased away a lot of goodwill he had in the community.

Sorry bit late to reply.

The Kingkiller chronicles. Supposed to be 3 books and the 3rd one has been many years overdue and might not appear.

I loved the prose of the first one particularly.

I would recommend reading the first 2 but on the proviso that the 3rd might never appear.

The whole thing was just bonkers, and it highlighted some of the worst parts of humanity for me, but if it is true that NK fabricated her claim (which it appears is what happened) then that is the absolute shitiest thing in a pile of shit.

Yet he’s managed to release a number of novella in the same world during that time?

I’d be fine with it if he wasn’t a pathological liar that kept making and breaking promises. He raised money for charity on the basis he would release the first chapter which he said was already complete and then went back on it. He’s a narcissistic dick head if you ask me.

Thanks, I will have a look into these.

I really want to start reading. I try, but I suck. The heavy concentration knocks me to sleep with 2-3 pages, it's actually crazy
But I'd love to read a book, which I haven't watched a film of, so the book has twists and turns and catches me out

Start with a novella or a standalone book then.

Devil's Road by Gary Gibson. Jurassic Park meets Death Race. Short, action packed and super fun. Sci-fi.

How to kill a demon king in ten easy steps by Andrew Rowe. Lots of humor, closer to fantasy.

Lost Horizon by James Hilton - mystery straddles fiction and fantasy. Brilliant writing and has some really good thought provoking content without compromising on the surprise.

Emperor's Soul by Brandon Sanderson. Deep, heavy with intricate world building. Brilliant story for such a small book.

Some standalone or easier to get into books.

Legend by David Gemmell - classic heroic fantasy.

Going Postal by Terry Pratchett - humor fantasy

Engage you quickly and keep you engaged?

Dungeon. Crawler. Carl.

And do the audiobooks, you'll thank me later.

Finished First Law trilogy. Easily my favorite fantasy series to day. Now reading "Kings of the Wyld". I am having much harder time getting into it, while 2nd and 3rd book of the First Law trilogy was difficult to put down. Might pause/stop and jump into "Best Served Cold" soon.

Awesome thank you.

Appreciate the time taken. I’ll definitely have a look at these tonight.

Thanks. I’ll look into this. Audio books are worse than books for me. When I’m sat with my eyes not doing anything. My concentration wonders

Just finished book 3 of Dungeon Crawler Carl.

Such a fun series so far and even had a little tug on the heartstrings with this one. Can't stress enough how fantastically produced the audiobook edition is. Glurp glurp.

Straight into book 4....

4 is great, and you are about to meet literatures greatest character:Samantha

Ok so, it's intrigued me.
Best place to listen to this?

I assume audible?

Yep!

If you want to save credits, do you have kindle unlimited? It is included in the membership and, if you check out the book, it gets a massive discount on audbile. Basically this what I do for most of my fantasy listening since most of those books are KU titles.

My partner has kindle unlimited. She manages a book a day it feels like.
So if I check out the book, I then buy it on audible for a discount? I'll figure it out

Yeah, If you "buy" a book on kindle, and that kindle account is tied to audible, it will give a big discount. I've seen 70-90% off of the audible version.

Heading to London on vacation for a week and looking for recommendations for the flights. Any suggestions for the best books/series you’ve read the past 12 months would be appreciated. I’ve basically crossed everything off the mental list I’ve had.
