7 books in 4 years is crazy productive. Would you say they're all as good as the first so far?Glad you liked it! Next book comes out in a few days and the audio book follows in Feb I think.

They get better (just wait till you meet Samantha ). They get absolutely more batshit crazy though.7 books in 4 years is crazy productive. Would you say they're all as good as the first so far?

What? From an author with such a unassuming avatar on his RR account? They get better (just wait till you meet Samantha ). They get absolutely more batshit crazy though.
11/11What?! How did I miss that the new one is out soon! Yes!
Nice, on the helpful recommendations of folks on here, am working through these. Just up to book four...they're not short!Happy New DCC Book Day to all who celebrate (audiobook on 2/11/25)
Reading or audiobook?Nice, on the helpful recommendations of folks on here, am working through these. Just up to book four...they're not short!
Reading, I've never gotten into audiobooks, my mind wanders too muchReading or audiobook?
Finished the latest DCC (great, although I don't think I enjoyed it as much as the previous ones) early this week, a few days too early for the next Sanderson. Been left in a no mans land of not enough time to start a new book.
This was my feeling on DCC as well.Finished the latest DCC (great, although I don't think I enjoyed it as much as the previous ones) early this week, a few days too early for the next Sanderson. Been left in a no mans land of not enough time to start a new book.
I am at around 1/3rd of it. It is more like Stormlight 3 and 4, rather than original Mistborn or Stormlight 1 and 2.Anyone tried the new Stormlight yet?
Think the series really dropped off after a strong start in the first 2 books and I do find his writing style to be a bit uninspiring when going through quieter periods. So, return to form or more of the same Sanderson formula?
I much prefer Mistborn Era 2 to Era 1. I've read Era 2 three times over the years (love the light tone and the Wax and Wayne interactions, Steris!) but I've read Era 1 only once (95% of Hero of Ages is the most depressing stuff). As for Stormlight, I agree with you about preferring 1 and 2 over 3 and 4, but I know huge numbers of fans who rate 3 or 4 as his best (check out several threads on Reddit about the best Stormlight book). Tastes do differ tremendously!I think that Mistborn 2 and Stormlight 3-5 are a massive downgrade from Mistborn 1 and Stormlight 1-2 which were peak Sanderson (together with his WoT books).
Oh for sure, tastes can be quite different, just expressing my opinion.I much prefer Mistborn Era 2 to Era 1. Finished Dungeon Crawler Carl book 2. I think I enjoyed it a bit more than the first one but I do zone out a little when they get into the nitty gritty of the battles sometimes. This one definitely hit harder on an emotional level. Already started book 3.
Listening. By far the best audiobooks I've ever heard.
Remind me, are you listening or reading?
Can't wait for you to get to book 4 and meet the greatest character in literary history: Samantha
Absolutely! The narrator, Jeff Hayes, has recorded cold reads for books 5-7 and posted them on youtube. Watching the guy work is amazing. You can listen to the first few minutes of the below and it will be (relatively) spoiler free other than character names you may not know and character voices you may not have heard. I still can't believe Donut's voices comes out of that personListening. By far the best audiobooks I've ever heard.

He does. They are recording full cast audiobook versions of DCC (like old time radio plays). Some people are just talented beyond belief! He owns the company that records them too, I believe?
That makes sense. As good as he is, it would definitely benefit from multiple performers. With his direction, of course. He does. They are recording full cast audiobook versions of DCC (like old time radio plays).
I considered trying to explain the concept, not even the character, of Samantha to my wife and realized it may have led to alimony.I'm so gutted I didn't realise I'd already caught up to DCC and now am stuck waiting. What a talent. Tried to describe it to the missus and she looked like she wanted to reconsider our relationship. Wait til I try to explain Kiwi and Tina. And why I care about their relationship.
Just started stormlight 5 and honestly can't remember a damn thing from the first four. Sigh.
I am at around 1/3rd of it. It is more like Stormlight 3 and 4, rather than original Mistborn or Stormlight 1 and 2.
On other words, massive amount of needless padding, characters that jump from other worlds, complex but not fleshed out groups etc. I think that Mistborn 2 and Stormlight 3-5 are a massive downgrade from Mistborn 1 and Stormlight 1-2 which were peak Sanderson (together with his WoT books).
There are many great Indie books that don't get the recognition they deserve. The guys has always done endings and the build up to them well, but the rest of it can be a proper grind to get through. Have never really felt the urge to reread any of his stuff outside the WOT books. His attempts at humour always fall flat and seem to be becoming ever more juvenile.
Not many doing old school fantasy epics at the moment with Romantasy bilge dominating and some big names in quieter periods. Pretty much the Tad Williams Osten Ard follow up and Sanderson carrying that style, and Abercrombie
Need the next Hobb series and some of those on long term breaks, Martin, Rothfuss, Bakker and J.V.Jones to come though.
If Malice was a standalone then absolutely, it is a brilliant book, but this remains one of only two series I have abandoned mid book (book 2).There are many great Indie books that don't get the recognition they deserve.
Try:
Faithful and the Fallen (or) Bloodsworn by John Gwynne
Manifest Delusions by Michael Fletcher
Best Laid Plans by Rob Hayes
Ash and Sand by Richard Nell
Why?If Malice was a standalone then absolutely, it is a brilliant book, but this remains one of only two series I have abandoned mid book (book 2).
The plot armor the author gave his villains was just stupid. It made every encounter anticlimactic as you knew every villain, no matter how minor, would at the very least not lose and would likely take out a protagonist during their escape no matter how improbable it might have seemed. The writing was just so weak and unimaginative. Why?
Book 3 was a banger and 4 neatly tied it off.
Tears, why?I really need to stop opening this thread it gets me close to tears every time
