Facts about football that shouldn't be true - but are

In Fergie's reign during the PL, Man Utd only outspent other teams in just three out of 21 seasons.
And the opposite are Newcastle. They were the biggest spenders in England in the 90s. At one stage, like from 90 until 98 their total spend in that period was twice as high as United’s and their net spend was 4-5 times as high as United’s. And what do they have to show for it? Not even a league cup!

He wasn’t really a goal scorer when he joined you. He was a one trick pony step over merchant who flattered to deceive. Took 5 seasons for him to start scoring consistently and then elevated his game at Madrid. There is a reason they went for Robben before Ronaldo. So these stats match up.

Just To clarify, they went for Robben because we convinced Ronaldo to stay. He definitely wasn't a preference over Ronaldo.

Robben scored 3 goals the season before Madrid brought him. Ronaldo scored 23.

The intertoto cup was a weird cup. Wasn’t it whoever was the best FairPlay team in the league?

It was application based, even in the 90s uefa controlled version. After that i think it came down to league position, so if only one team from a league applied they would get in even if they were relegated. the cutoff point for application must have been late, because Juventus played the 1999 version after finishing 7th, which was the same points as the two uefa cup qualifiers directly above them. It mostly seems to have been used as a way to get into the uefa cup by teams that narrowly missed out on a european tournament place.

Had to Google that.

There was also an Anglo Italian cup, Italy and England.

Newcastle won that.

The Texaco cup, Scotland/England/Ireland.

Newcastle won that twice.

The inter city fairs cup.

Newcastle also won that.

Their list of pointless trophies is astonishing.

The fairs cup was a quite legit tough tournament once they started using league position for invites. It was basically the 60s uefa cup by the time Newcastle won it, and was turned directly into it when uefa took over.

It took Rooney 45 years to break the England goalscoring record.
It only took Kane 8 years to break the England goalscoring record.

Feck me, Rooney had a hell of a long career there!

This might have been mentioned before but cba reading the whole thread!

Man City are the only club to get the relegated (1938) the season after winning the league (1937).

In the season they were relegated they were the league's top scorers (80 goals) and had a positive goal difference (+3).

This is insane. Imagine being top scorers and being relegated

This one still annoys me now
This happened to my team a few years ago. Jozo simunovic got sent off in a pre season friendly in Switzerland and then had to serve a two game ban in our league. Load of Celtic fans as usual crying conspiracy and that the SFA is out to get us , when in reality it was the decision of the Swiss FA and their referee who deemed it serious enough to report it to our FA and implement a ban.
Same would have happened in scholes and rooneys cases. Would have had little to do with the English FA, but the Association and referee where the match was played (unless it was played in england)
If a tackle or behaviour is deemed serious enough in a friendly it will be reported and made to serve a ban.

No idea how serious your boys tackle/incident was but Scholes's and Rooney's were quite innocuous in my opinion. Not going to argue if the incident is worth a red, just not serious enough to be enforced in real matches.

Can't find a video of Scholes's red.

Bryan Robson played in the Premier league for Middlesbrough in Highbury in 1997. Thought he had finished playing long before then.

Did Becks get a ban when we played Necaxa?

Oh of course, I'm not disagreeing that it's true or trying to correct you.

Just having a bit of a whine about the fact that it is true. I don't think players should really get medals or be called a winner of something for doing so little. They could have brought me on as a substitute in those matches instead of him and it wouldn't have changed the outcomes.
How many third choice goalkeepers have world cup medals and have never played a game in the tournament?

Scott Carson has won 2 champions leagues with 2 different teams.
I had to check that. Turns out that the only thing he won other than those 2 CLs is a Super Cup. That has to be a unique trophy collection!

Juan Roman Riquelme spent more time playing for Boca than he did for Villareal. 4 years at Villareal and 8 at Boca (i'm only counting his time at Boca after villareal, otherwise its 14 years in total!). Always assumed that he played the majority of his career in spain before returning to boca for a couple of years to retire.

Juan Mata was the first Spanish player to join United from Chelsea

Juan Mata was the first person called one Juan Mata to play for United

My first United match live was the season before he joined and Harry Gregg was in goal. We lost 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and have hated Chelsea ever since.
VS QPR in 76, Gordon Hill and Sammy Mac scored was my first league game
