Well,

Having no discussion of this is a bit spactacular. I come here for news and am wondering what happened with this transfer. It seems to have been largely ignored by the media also.

What has happened here ? Will we get him in January? Will this unsettle Evra?

Chances are he'll be cup-tied in January so I can't see us going back for him this season.

When the deal fell through there were threads in the United forum that were locked and for some reason the one in the transfer forum was too.

I doubt we'll go for him again. Seems like it was a last minute emergency measure. I expect next summer we'll identify a new target and try and get them in early having hopefully learnt a few lessons. I don't think it'll have much effect on Evra. He's probably celebrating the news.

The only one we might be back for should be Herrera, right?

Coentrao will be next summer if we want a lb then.

There's no point in not locking this and leaving the Herrera thread open. I want to hear the clubs explanation for what happened.

Coentrao would have been really, really good here IMO.

For some reason United fans seem to think the Evra will go mental if he gets competition for his place. I think Evra is well up for that sort of challenge. He strikes me as the sort who would push himself even harder if his place was threatened.

So half the Caf have been pissing and moaning about the club for allowing this to fall through, yet it has been confirmed by the BBC that the agreement was in place before the deadline and necessary paperwork submitted only for Madrid to back out due to not signing a replacement.

So not the club's fault.

Which won't fit into the narrative on here.

Sharp practice by Madrid I suspect?

They had a player called Siqueira on hold for the past week in case Coentrao left. We came in very late for Coentrao and they tried to get hold of Siqueira - but it being only a few minutes before the deadline Mendes had already placed him with Benfica.

United reckon they got the fax into La Liga 3 minutes before the deadline. Madrid say we didn't. I doubt the Liga officials will leap to our timestamped defence.

It's in the BBC article that you referred to in OP. What more explanation do you want?

Precisely why I made this thread. I didn't know that. No excuse for leaving it so late IMO.

What's the difference between 'not locking' and 'leaving open'?

Also the club doesn't post here, you will most likely get the worst case scenario judging by the mood thus far today.

But yes, he's a tidy footballer.

There wasn't really much else to say about it as it was confirmed that Madrid backed out due to not getting that left back who ended up going to Benfica.

In the past when United related transfers collapse or are completed, threads get locked.

With Herrera, it's still a bit unclear what happened with that and has generated a lot of discussion so little point in closing that yet.

Excuse? Why would we need an excuse? We already have a great left back, and we couldn't get a deal over the line for another left back that we have been chasing all summer. When it became apparent that it wasn't going to happen on deadline day, we've had a go at Coentrao.

No excuses necessary. Not really much else to say here.

He was available all summer. I'm sure Madrid would have taken £15m.

So why didnt we bid for him earlier? Would have been a great versatile signing.

Think he'd have been a decent backup in all the positions he can play. He's in the Real Madrid CL squad though isn't he? So January would be pretty pointless.

My point is that there should be a place to discuss the aftermath/opinion on him. There's already been three different explanations on what happened in this thread alone.

I'm well aware the club don't post here, but thankfully we do have some posters who contribute with news and discussion so we will be able to get updates and information.

Class at LB for Portugal. Unsure how hed be in midfield but would like to see it.

Probably Moyes being cautious. He wanted to see how he would adapt to the PL. A loan deal with a buy option would have been perfect.

He'd have been a great signing and I'm indeed surprised that we didn't make a move sooner than that. He could be probably as good as Baines, is younger than him and has also played in midfield. I was extremely happy last night when it was announced that we'd signed him but it amounted to nothing in the end.

Dont know why the transfer forum thread was locked

I locked the one in the United forum because he's not a United player and someone was getting ahead of themselves

But if United had approached Real with this deal a few days ago instead of focusing on Baines, it would have given Real time to get in a suitable replacement.

Not completely the clubs fault, but they certainly have to shoulder some of the blame.

I think I was more disappointed that this fell through rather than the Herrera deal, and I really wanted Herrera so it speaks volumes. Coentrao's versatility would have been great.

This just completes a joke of a deadline day really. I didn't really want him or anything, but it just shows more incompetence from our part. Couldn't send the paperwork in on time

I've read that the paperwork was done on time but Madrid pulled out at the last minute as they were worried about not having a replacement for him.

At this point we can believe what we want I suppose.

If Evra was the type to get unsettled then it would've already happened with the Baines bids.

Bidding for yet another LB won't have helped the situation and last minute at that. Must make him think we were absolutely desperate to replace him.

That's more the point, it became obvious that Everton would not sell both players, so why didn't we go in earlier. Our negotiation team seem a bit like our midfield, SLOW and PONDEROUS.

Could be that, but after everything ats happened with us this window, it just seems more likely that we fecked things up.

Was really excited about this one last night and disappointing to see it fell through. Hope this is something we re-visit in the future as I think he's versatile enough to play a DM/LW role for a while before becoming our long term successor to Evra - a club stalwart that will be really hard to replace.

His age and potential is much more appealing than Baines in my view so if he continues to develop as he has been I'd love to see him in red in the future.

What is more funny is that it takes less than a minute to send an email confirming the interest/deal.

By most accounts that's not what happened.
