Woodward briefed the press moments after the Atletico Madrid transfer ban appeal failed, once they knew that Griezmann wasn't coming.

Really?Wasn't that briefing to one of the investor summits that was before that? Maybe I remembered it wrongly though. Jose comments on 3-4 signings were also made quite a while ago, and he did admit that Zlatan's and Rojo's injuries have changed his plans as well. He gave his list to Woodward in March, so by all accounts he could have added a couple more names to that to make up the numbers.

You do know briefings are not exactly word by word accurate account of transfer plans of a club, don't you ?
The number is not set in stone, although ideally the manager and ceo would like to keep the flux of inflow and outflow to maybe 3 or 4. They could have a change of heart, a target may suddenly become available that interests us and things could always change.

I hope some of our English players can fit into the potential team for next season. If we get our targets it's only Rashford and maybe Shaw that have any chance.

That is completely irrelevant to my posts.

According to the papers, the most reliable news so far is that we are in for 5 players this summer. At first, this list didn't seem to make any sense. But then, I started tinkering and realized that this would be the perfect list for Mourinho's system.

I feel, JM is going for this 433 formation –

Belotti
Perisic_________Morata

Pogba_______________Herrera
Fabinho

Shaw____Lindelof____Bailly____Valencia

DDG

It all makes sense because, we went in for Morata only after Griezmann pledged his loyalty to Atletico Madrid. Replace Morata with Griezmann in the above formation and we'll have the most formidable 433 lineup in the Europe.

We were never interested in dealing with Real Madrid, due to the bitterness involving DDG. But as a last minute gasp, we are being forced to go for Morata. And, Morata isn't a bad second-choice either. Mourinho developed the player at RM and he mostly deployed him as a dynamic attacker drifting in and around Ronaldo. So, he is fluid enough to holdup the play as well as make smart runs. Who knows, with enough desire, he might actually become better than Griezmann.

In Pogba and Herrera, we have the best shuttling-midfielders in the world. And, 433 is the only system which seems to bring the best out of Pogba. Given the age of Michael Carrick, we need a new holding-midfielder and after his impressive performances this season at Monaco, Fabinho fell into the radar. Fabinho is the surprise signing Mourinho spoke during the season as he wasn't on the radar until the last stages of UCL. In my opinion, Fabinho has a great game-awareness and is an impressive tackler. He seems like the best 'water carrier' at the moment.

We've created good number of chances last-season from the midfield. But, our main problem was that there wasn't a good bridge between midfield and attack. Our right flank was okay, partly due to the brilliance of Antonio Valencia. But, our left flank was very poor. We didn't have a solid full back on the left side and there was no one who could tirelessly convert defense into attack. We deployed Young, Martial, Lingard, Rashford, Mkhitaryan and Rooney on our left wing. But, they were either too absorbed defending or too tired to keep going at the defenders and completing the take-ons. That's why, we are going in for Perisic. Even though he has only 2 or 3 seasons left at his peak, he is lightning quick, tirelessly successful in take-ons and unashamed to trackback. I think he's been our No. 1 priority for the summer since Christmas.

We need a Target-man. Someone tall, strong, physical, fast with great anticipation and finishing. Trust me people, I've followed all the top scorers across the top 5 leagues in Europe. There's no one better than Belotti. He's a star in the making and he's a box-office finisher. He's got the physical presence of Ibrahimovic and the movement and pace of Chicharito. We'll be lucky to get him. People who keep wondering why we are buying two strikers when we already have Martial and Rashford, don't understand the importance of a Target-man, especially in Premier League.

And, Lindelof is an obvious choice. He is the best young CB around and Smalling has lost his hunger/drive in the game. We need to move on from him.

In Mata and Mkhitaryan we have decent creative midfielders and it'd help us to shift to 4231 in some tactical matches requiring to break deadlocks.

Romero, Fellaini, Blind, Rojo, Darmian, Carrick, Young are all good squad players and we definitely need them for rotation.

Rashford, Jones, Martial and Lingard are young and can improve with hard work. If they do so, they'll easily break into the first team. Else, they'll become backups and they are worthy enough backups.

Smalling and Rooney seem excess to the squad and I'd love to see them leave, making Herrera our new captain and DDG our new VC.

If all this happens, next season would be a dream at the Theatre of Dreams.

Carrick and Lingard will still get loads of games. Probably one of Jones / Smalling too. It's a long season with loads of games.

Rashford will play plenty as he rightfully should. Shaw will play more. Smalling or Jones (whoever stays) will play as a rotation cb. Carrick will play if we don't get Fabinho. And we know Jose has that bizarre love for Lingard so can see him starting quite a lot of games. Wouldn't be shocked if he started the opening game of the season.

Sorry but club over country for me. If the English players are good enough, sure give them the games. If not, play the best players the team has.

JM loves Shaw. He's a great admirer of the young FB. His outspoken nature is his way of pushing the players, kind of like the 'Whiplash'. Shaw needs to mature and improve his tactical game. He is good technically and also has the pace to be the best left back. I have a feeling we'll not lose him. For the time being, until Shaw peaks, we'll keep rotating Darmian and Blind.

JM loves Rashford as well and he even said he liked him. So I don't know why you ruled him out from your dream of theatre dream XI. And why Morata is right winger?

Perisic Belotti Morata

vs

Neymar Suarez Messi OR
Ronaldo Benzema Bale OR
Robben Lewandowski Muller OR
Hazard Lukaku Pedro OR
Alli Kane Eriksen OR
De Bruyne Silva Aguero Benardo OR
Reus Aubameyang Dembele

I must say I'm not too confident with that front three when I look at other club's attackers.

Mourinho loving Shaw has to be one of the weirdest opinions I've read on here recently. All the evidence points in the opposite direction.

You do want the team to be successful ? When was the last time a team was successful with a core of English players ? The reality is that apart from Deli Ali none are good enough for the really top tier in Europe and even that's debatable or Madrid would get him .

Kane?

Fabinho NEEDS to be our next focus and signing seeing as we've already got the ball rolling with Morata, the more I watch of Fabinho the more I see a more defensive version of Vieira in his Arsenal days and his qualities could genuinely kickstart Pogba into doing his thing as the shackles could come off.

Alli, Kane, Rose, Walker, Dier...

Are you saying rhey are all good enough or that Spurs have been successful? Because to my reckoning so far they haven't won anything.

Exactly this. Maybe because I am not from the country, but I would not want to sacrifice club success for English players developments. As you mentioned, this English core of the Spurs side has won nothing so far. If any of our own English talent bar Rashford comes through the ranks, like Mitchell or Gomes, then great for both club and country. If not, I couldn't care much about not having an Englishman in the starting 11.

I think a DM should be at the top of our priority list right now, I don't see any other position that would improve us as much as getting a quality defensive midfielder to allow Herrera and especially Pogba more freedom when attacking. Fabinho would be my personal favourite and he would instantly make our midfield a lot more balanced and would allow Herrera and Pogba to play in role's more suited to their strengths.

Of all the English players we have in our squad you picked out Shaw? The guy who has had a grand total of about 9 good games in 3 seasons?
Most likely, we will see Smalling, Lingard, Rashford play in several games, for us. I'd also expect to see some youth players to play in the League Cup, as our focus shifts to CL and the league.

Not sure if this guy can be trusted, but he is a city fan who thinks fabinho is joining us

So far only ITK reporting something. That chap reported the Silva medical pretty early, he ruined my day i remembered him. Dont know if he only goes by the recent whispers or knows more, i assume he speculates

Hmm then we may be on to something - di marzio did report our interest in Fabinho. Some others said we are waiting for him to return from his holidays - whenever that date is, to go ahead with the transfer.

Will be announced before monday ends that the fee is agreed. Happy days people.

Fabinho and Lindeloff would be a fantastic start to the window.

freelance journo and runs a MCFC website. Why are all these randoms talking in such certainties all of a sudden? The best i can take from this is that he might know someone within City that said he was off to MUFC??

Whose the best french journo that would know things about this possible deal?

He might have heard something from the club? Like that other city journo who did the livestream and was almost talking in certainties about City not getting Fabinho
