Fabinho

Went on some Monaco forums, read some of the threads on him. Here's what their fans say:

-Solid player but they like their youth at the position and think 25M Euros is a lot for a fullback, so they'd be happy enough with that figure. His replacements are a 22 year old who did alright on loan at Toulouse and a 19 year old they like from the academy.
-His versatility is real, he's a decent DM even though he wasn't totally consistent there
-He linked up well with Silva on the right
-0 assists in 53 games (Whoscored confirms this)
-Last 6 months, played at a high level, even though he played a ton of minutes all season. Faded a bit the last few weeks, but understandably.
-Better defensively than going forward, though he some felt he made bad errors at times.

Overall, a little less complimentary than I would have thought in terms of comments (compared to say Saints fans who think Schneiderlin is their best player and damn near world class as a DM) but he played damn near every minute for the best defense in France (by 7 goals conceded over PSG) and his form seems to have been strongest over the last 6 months.

Jardim certainly rated him. He played all the time, just a question of whether Toulalan was around so he had to plug a hole at DM or stay at RB. L'equipe had him as Jallet's backup on their Best XI in Ligue 1.

Seems like a solid enough signing considering he's 21 and would seem likely to cost just over half of what Shaw did, but maybe not an open and shut obvious one.

So he's more of a defensive fullback with good passing? Could explain why van Gaal isn't interested, he likes attacking fullbacks.

But he likes them multifunctional right? I would expect he could play CB too. Plus Valencia was relatively defense oriented than attack I thought

It's more that Valencia is so shit at attacking it seems he's more defensively orientated.

Multifunctionality is great, but not if he doesn't fit the profile of the role he's expected to play most. It seems we're after a top contreback aswell and still have McNair so we don't really need him there, CDM could've been a spot for him though yes.

Valencia is reliable, in our ever changing back 4 last season he was always available and he could perform to van Gaal's liking. Retain possesion mostly, be defensively good and get forward with thinking instead of just bombing (even though his final ball wasn't great). Rafael is good going forward but he's more gung-ho and injury prone therefore I fully expect us to buy competition for Valencia.

Based on the Coleman story appearing I can only imagine the fee got to Coleman Levels and we switched back to our first choice.

Well the rumoured price for Fabinho jumped from £10M to £20M seemingly overnight, if we could get Coleman for £20M I'd be happy.

Matter of time before the papers start running this story again. How's he been doing this season?

We got Darmian, we won't be buying Fabinho.

Playing well, scored a few penalties barely missed a minute for Monaco. Filled in as a DM at the start of the season and back to RB again. Usual Fabinho.

Seem to recall City were linked to him in the Summer so expect them to follow up.

He's now playing against USA, for the olympic team.

Manchester United & Barcelona join the race for Fabinho

According to Gianluca di Marzio, Manchester United and Barcelona have joined the race with Napoli notably for AS Monaco right-back Fabinho.

The Principality side are looking to recoup around €25m for the player. Napoli have offered €11m plus bonuses for the Brazilian.

Annual Fabinho rumours. Reckon Mourinho will stick with Darmian and try getting a tune out of him.

I prefer him as a DM, but if he moves it will probably be for a RB spot.

He's fabulous with a Brazilian twist to it. We must sign him up

Is he any good going forward? This thread doesn't paint a very good picture of his attacking abilities.

He has very hard - goalie wrist breaking - shot on him. I've seen him cross, tackle, shoot. He's fast, and 6'2". 6 goals and 4 assists last year from 3060 minutes game time. Not a dribbler but he out runs his man.

I want us to sign him last season, he's played a lot at defensive midfield this season.

I hope if Mourinho needed convincing that Darmian isn't good enough to start for us, this match sealed the fate and we move in for him. Is he involved in Copa for Brazil?

Mourinho has been a fan of him when he worked with him during his time at Real Madrid.

His offensive game needs work to be fair but he great defensively which is rarity in a Brazilian fullback.

I'd definitely swap him for Darmian. He's faster, more skilful and just seems like he would be more of a "world class" RB in the future. In the mould of Dani Alves for example.

You sure you have seen him play?

Couldn't have picked a more different type of right back. So obviously can't have seen him play and is name dropping. Pretty much like comparing Vida to Rio.

For me I'd have loved Fabinho last summer, he'll cost far far more now and I do believe there's a very good player somewhere in Darmain.

True, sounded like he was describing Mariano rather than Fabinho. Personally feel he's far to limited a player for the heights we aim to reach.

All I know is that he ran the midfield at the Emirates a year ago.

Yeah, he's quite good going forward and can actually defend too (which is something modern day full backs can't seem to grasp the concept of) if we sign this guy our full backs our looking strong for the best part of a decade.

Bit weird that he's a RB who also plays as a defensive midfielder. Are there are others who come to mind who do so? I guess Philipp Lahm is one.

Rafael against Arsenal once if I remember

Phil Jones comes to mind, he was also our corner taker under LVG!

I don't think United need him. We have Timothy Foshu Mensah/ Varela/ Valencia to play as RB even if we decide to sell Darmian
