Both of Monaco's fullbacks (including Kurzawa) are potentially very good players. Fabinho is more in the Ivanovic mold - defensively stout above all else right-back as of now (which isn't necessarily a bad thing to begin with). He might never be an Alves or a Maicon, but his attacking play has shown marked improvement through the last season, and will likely improve in the coming years.
Some fullbacks are great at bombing forward but need to work on their defensive work-rate or positioning, or vice versa - that's all part of a player's progression, and at 21 Fabinho is far from the final product. So a hands-on trainer coach like Van Gaal should be able to aid his development, especially when Fabinho offers a degree of versatility like Bernat or Alaba (albeit to a varying degree). Also worth bearing in mind that United's greatest rightback of all time (and the greatest rightback in Premier League history) wasn't a naturally gifted attacking fullback at 21, but he was tenacious and improved each season - from his crossing technique, to his positioning or timing the runs ins sync with Beckham, etc.
That said, (if De Gea leaves) personally I wouldn't touch Fabinho because of Mendes factor. Might come across as a myopic or counter-productive stance, and he isn't 100 % responsible to be fair - but the partnership hasn't worked out very well for United for the most part, and we might be better served severing all ties with that man (apart from Di Maria of course). There are plenty of other fish in the sea.
Perhaps free up Di Maria to wreck havoc from the right wing..?He is a fullback ala Azpilicueta, he will defend very well and completely free his winger, who won't have to support him too much.
Don't see why not, that rule just prevents players from playing for more than 2 clubs in the same season (ala Ben Arfa) as far as I'm aware. He's not even played for Monaco in the 2015/16 season so shouldn't be any issues. In all seriousness can we actually sigh him? Has he not just signed permanent deal with Monaco?

Could not agree more with the bold part. I think for the most part, we have been shafted by Mendes esp when we need to retain our players. If we are done in once again, we should make sure we don't touch his clients with a barge pole. Need to move on to someone else and ask him to take a hike. Maybe then he will realize the importance of not pissing off a power like United.
I think unless a full back is similar to Alves in attacking quality it is always better to have one who is solid defensively, with our style of play he will get a lot of space going forward so he can develop that part of his game but I am pretty much sick of giving silly goals away because our right back doesn't have a clue where to position himself defensively.
I'm almost certain Rafael's off, even when fit he didn't displace Valencia who'hasn't exactly flourished at right back, throw in his persistent injuries and I don't see a future for him under van Gaal. I think Fabinho and Valencia would be adequate options for right back heading into the new season.Well he certainly seems an excellent prospect. My guess is that it all hinges on the future of Rafael.
Let him in that case. United will land players who are not associated with him. And I would like to think if a player is interested in joining us, he will switch away from Mendes in case they are associated with him. If we start making a case for this, I am sure he will be worried. Not really. Mendes will just go to City, Chelsea or other clubs.
I don't know why people seem to think Mendes can make DDG stay.
He's a bit like Matic, but not really like him at all.According to whoscored.com, he can also play CDM. Does anyone know what he's like as a CDM?

I was just being cheeky. I've never seen the lad play if I'm honest but the post above mine seems an accurate description by the bits Ive read about him.Fair enough. Guess that answers my question then.
Pretty much all the elite European teams have full backs who are mainly strong offensively. We really need to move on from this obsession of being tough and solid and embrace the possibility of dominating most games through being on the front foot.I think unless a full back is similar to Alves in attacking quality it is always better to have one who is solid defensively, with our style of play he will get a lot of space going forward so he can develop that part of his game but I am pretty much sick of giving silly goals away because our right back doesn't have a clue where to position himself defensively.

Ye I know. Silly shit
Seriously, though, if he can play CDM - a position we could do with a bit more cover in, as well as being able to play right back, it seems that he'd be a typical Van Gaal signing.
Yeah he would be, but at the same time I'd prefer 2 central midfielders signed. Schneiderlin plus 1.
Have you watched him?€15m is a great deal for this guy.
He seems to be a right footed version of Blind in terms of versatility, which is a good thing considering our injuries.

last thing we need is jack of all trades....
Seen some of Monaco's games lately but honestly didn't remember him in it. Dunno if that's good or bad, since he's a defender.Watched him against the french big boys (Lyon, PSG, Marseille) + some CL games and I thought he stood out in that defense alongside Abdennour. Decent going forward and very good defensively.
I have this habit of highlighting what I read when I'm on a computer. It's occasionally helpful. Was hoping you didn't find that.
LVG seems to think differently. I dont see much wrong with a player who can play very well in multiple positions as long as he does his job.last thing we need is jack of all trades....
Lets start with the basics, can he take a throw-in?

Tall, athletic, technical good and safe with the ball, very strange that we pulled our interest.
