FA Cup 5th round: 28/2/25 - 3/3/25

Zirkzee looked like he didn't want to take a penalty at full time. Maybe he shouldn't have...

Will Amorim last another 12 months at United? Feels like a big ask to get them going again.

Does he deserve another 12 months ? Not based on what he has done so far- but since we are in the shit we are, he will get 12 more months

What an awful quarters. City will never have an easier chance to win the FA

Was thinking from an Arsenal perspective if only we had put away 1 of those chances against Utd.

Then I remembered that with what we have up front just now Fulham would have just put us out anyway.

Could see Bournemouth taking them given they're at home as well. Would be great too as it would guarantee someone winning it for the 1st time in decades or in Bournemouth and Brightons case the 1st time ever

I think Bournemouth could beat City. Would make for an interesting run to see who wins it.

Will he have the financial backing to get his players in to suit his style of play?

City are certainly favourites now but we know they aren't that good this season and there's plenty of good/top half of the table teams left. Fulham, Palace, Bournemouth, Brighton never won a meaningful trophy I believe. Villa without a trophy since 1996. Forest since 1990. Ipswich since 1981. Unless City win it, it'll be refreshing no matter which of other clubs left manage it.

Looking at draw, Bournemouth already beat City at home so they'll have plenty of belief. City players are most experienced at winning things but Villa have Emery who's had plenty of success in that as well.

Fulham, Bournemouth, Brighton and Villa are only 4-5 points behind City in the league, each. Nottingham are even ahead of them. Bournemouth already beat City at home in the league in November. Brighton and Villa both won against them at home, too.

Ye but it’s a cup. Only thing city can win this season. They’ll win it or at least get to the final.

Assuming forest beat Ipswich, then they are the most recent of the remains teams other than city to have won the FA cup… back in 1958. Basically whoever wins other than city, it’ll be the biggest domestic moment the majority of their fans have ever had.

City are winning this now.
I mean, Bournemouth has been essentially as good as them post-Rodri injury, in both points and goal difference. And it's at Bournemouth. There's certainly none of the major heavyweights left, but this will be about an even game. I wouldn't expect City to be favored by much, if at all.

Obviously gutted we’re out but if Bournemouth beat City, it will be fun to see a team who haven’t lifted the trophy in a long time win it

In terms of the xpts understat table, we have:
  • 4th vs 8th (Fulham vs palace)
  • Championship side vs 7th (Preston vs villa)
  • 3rd vs 5th (Bournemouth vs City)
  • 9th vs 11th or 18th (Brighton vs Forest or Ipswich)
Think it's actually quite a fun quarter final, and the toughest possible match for City. Bournemouth have been the best team in the league this season after Liverpool and Arsenal, and are at home. I'd fancy them to beat city at home

Ye but we both know league position can mean nothing. Forest finished outside the relegation last year and are now 3rd. Doesn't make them the 3rd best team in the league. Teams this season are obviously having good years. Bournemouth have gone 15th, 12th to currently 7th. Next year they could drop again.

That's why the league position I put isn't their actual league position, but the league position based on their underlying metrics this season in terms of the quality of their play. Bournemouth have statistically been the 3rd best side in the league, better than City, Fulham 4th, etc.

Looking at the Quarter final line up I can't help thinking but for injuries to Mainoo.Martinez,Amad it could easily have been a 3rd Manchester Derby FA Cup final in a row.

For the record the last time Man United lost a knock out round in a FA Cup tie in 90 minutes was 4 years ago against Leciester when was behind closed doors, last time in front of crowd was 6 years ago against Wolves (Quarter final March 2019)

I admire the ability to blank the 2023 final from memory and wish I could do the same.

Probably the best set of pens in a shootout (that I've seen) since Spain/Italy in the Confederations Cup like 12 years ago.

I think Bournemouth will knock them out.

Them, Villa, Brighton, Forest and Fulham should really be making this their top priority.
With the possible exception of Villa none of these teams will have a better chance of silverware for a very long time unless they wind up in the conference league.

Any manager of said teams that don't prioritise this regardless of league consequences should be sacked on the spot.
