F1 2024 Season

Surely the obvious reason is that for the teams to agree, any new entrant needs to bring more value to the overall pot than each team would lose by splitting the money with another team?

Also given there’s a limit to the number of new teams (e.g. due to pit lane restrictions) and how once you’re in you’re in, I see why they’re hesitant to give away a place to an Andretti and block a bigger name which will offer genuine competitiveness coming in in the future

Bigger name than Andretti? Who would that be? Short of getting another major manufacturer, which won't happen because they're all fecking off to WEC, there are no bigger names in racing. Penske? WEC. Chip Ganassi? WEC.

Andretti would have helped the US market F1 is desperate to crack. It's a ridiculous decision but unsurprising.

I’m not saying I disagree. I just think the teams/ Liberty disagree!

Absolute legacy move. Some of the greatest of the past two decades have tried to replicate Schumachers revival of a sleeping giant at Ferrari. If Hamilton manages it I think it makes him the GOAT

Think that's a good move for him. Not much left to lose and perhaps the only team that could be competitive with Red Bull at that stage.

It's Ferrari of today. They will truly feck him with their plan A to Z.

Stop with this nonsense

I've just found out McLaren are unveiling their new livery at our place on Monday, apparently the car is here now, need to try and find it as I'm away Monday.

I think there's some romance in his decision too, Ferrari may be a comedy act nowadays but they're still the most iconic team in the paddock

Huge move! If he can bring them back to winning ways it would be an incredible story for both him and the team.

Really surprised by Hamilton thought he'd be starting to consider retirement especially if he gets number 8 this season

Wonder how Leclerc will react as I can't see Lewis taking a spot to be number 2 driver? Ferrari also well known for having team orders

Wonder who will get the Mercedes seat, Lando maybe? Unless McLaren can remain genuinely competitive. An Albon or a Piastri?

Alternatively Max cakewalking the championship against Ferrari Lewis for a couple of years will cement his claim as the GOAT.

Really surprised by this move! I am a fan of him more than Mercedes. Surely he must think Ferrari’s car will compete better short term. I think the reason for him racing is number 8.

Can’t fault your logic, but Ferrari must have given Lewis some assurances that the 2025 car would be at least competitive, he won’t just want to to be there, just to make up the numbers.

My interest in F1 is dwindling, but this is a real move for the legacy and the prestige.

Ferrari is synonymous with F1 and like a Man United or Liverpool, is the brand you think of when you hear F1.

Neither party has anything to lose, and potentially plenty to gain.

I think Mercedes will go with Russell as team lead and one of their junior drivers. Kimi Antonelli will be the one to watch, starts F2 with Prema this year and in a couple of years will be the next big thing.

I think that's a brilliant move for both, always felt like he was destined for it one day. If it happens and he goes to Ferrari, returns to the classic Hamilton yellow helmet, it's full on Mansell vibes.

Hasn't he always wanted to drive for Ferrari? I think almost every driver on the grid would say the same. They're still the greatest and most iconic team in the sport. He'll tick that one off his bucket list and even if they can't beat Red Bull, they should still be as competitive as Mercedes have been of late.

Straight swap with Sainz? Mercedes should go all in on Norris probably.

Anything official by either Hamilton or Ferrari? Can see the appeal for both but is it more than a rumor right now?

What a dumb move for Ferrari and dumb for Hamilton

Why announce it right before the season starts? Now they’ll give Russell full priority

And at Ferrari it’ll put Leclerc nose out of joint but he’ll out qualify Lewis at almost every race

What difference does it matter when they announce it if they know internally it's happening? Alonso went to McLaren the first time around a season ahead, left with a WDC, makes no difference if the driver does the job.

Lewis might struggle in quali unless he upturns his form, even at his age but his race performance is still absolute top tier, Leclerc's hasn't been, this would be a lovely match up.

Is the car the biggest issue at Ferrari? Sure they've struggled with reliability but they've snatched so many defeats from the jaws of victory on strategy.

Im sure they could have held off for a bit longer, at least until the summer break before doing anything official. that would ensure he stayed number 1 driver at Mercedes.

now he’s guaranteed to be second fiddle for his last season at Merc and second fiddle to Leclerc when he moves.

A story like that would never remain secret in F1 and he's still Lewis Hamilton, being paid to be No 1.

He won't be at Merc, he won't be at Ferrari and you know it. It's like saying Alonso would be second fiddle anywhere he goes, he won't be.

Toto Wolff is informing Mercedes employees of Hamilton's departure this afternoon then I would expect an official announcement soon after.

Welcome to the good side, sir. I don't expect much anyway, as RedBull's dominance is very overbearing but it will be a lovely moment to see him driving in that iconic Ferrari brand.

I didn’t read the article properly and just assumed it was for the upcoming season. The thought of supporting a Ferrari driver is weird.

Why ? Lewis and Mercedes will want to go out with a bang, I doubt very much that Toto had no idea this was in the offering.
I also disagree that Lewis will be second driver this season or at Ferrari.
He's been spending a lot of time at the factory recently and was reported to be all in not long ago then suddenly he's leaving for Ferrari in 2025. I could be wrong but something tells me Hamilton still isn't happy with the progress Mercedes have made and thinks Ferrari will be better positioned in 2025.

More like 'sometimes maybe not disastrous, okayish, sometimes absolutely utterly shambolic'

Of course he’ll be second fiddle at both.

Leclerc is Ferrari’s poster boy and he will be dominant in qualifying anyway.

Alonso would be second fiddle to Leclerc or max as well. That’s why he’s been at Renault and AM

The only person Hamilton would be second fiddle to is Max, which is why a RB deal would never happen.
