F1 2024 Season

This sport became a joke in 2021 with the authorities fixing the last race for Netflix.

It has no credibility anymore and is just wrestling with a big engineering budget.

I'm amazed anyone still bothers watching it.

cars going vroom is still fun to me, and i enjoy the competitive element wheel to wheel on the track, i just don’t care anymore about the standings, steward’s decisions or punishments, as it will clearly be tweaked in whatever way suits them. it’s like gladiator in the way that it’s set up to look like a sport, but at the end of the day, the emperor decides how it goes down.

The missus is doing a full binge of Drive to Survive to catch up and she's going through 2021 and giving me a running commentary and it's making me angry all over again. God help what'll happen when she gets to Abu Dhabi.

What an amazing and terrible season all at once.

F1 and Nestlé have announced a new multi-year partnership making KitKat the Official F1 Chocolate Bar.

The collab will launch in 2025, marking the 90th anniversary of KitKat and the 75th anniversary of F1.

Better not be the American version because that version is puke inducing

With due apologies to Americans, but American chocolates are meh.
That's mostly true but Giardellis is half decent and the world would be a lot more bare on the candy bar front if we didn't have Mars company. Lots of smaller chocolatiers that are good though. Otherwise only mainland European chocolate rocks. Those silly islands in between cant even make decent beer, let alone chocolate.

F1 Commission had its meeting with some interesting nuggets like the introduction of a cooling device in the cockpit for hot conditions:

On the technical side, they approved a range of technical changes for the 2025 season including the introduction of a driver cooling kit when heat hazard gets declared – following on from “encouraging” test results.

Also looks like the agreed on teams being able to spend more money on sustainability outside the cost cap.

Pessimist in me wonders how much the first was motivated to continue to make certain locations work despite driver complaints, and the cost cap exemption makes me wonder how tight that's written bc you know some team or teams will be looking to exploit that otherwise.

Formula 1 owner Liberty Media has announced its president and CEO Greg Maffei will leave his role by the end of 2024.
Maffei, who joined the American investment firm in 2005 and became its CEO in February 2006, will depart from Liberty Media after opting not to renew his expiring contract.

He will be replaced on an interim basis by Liberty Media’s chairman John Malone, and according to the company he will stay on as a senior advisor to help smoothen the management transition.

In his role Maffei has been a driving force behind the firm's acquisition of F1 in 2017, helping transform the series into a global and modern entertainment powerhouse.

Earlier this year Liberty also announced it would acquire MotoGP and add it to its wide range of entertainment properties.

Liberty has announced a series of changes to its famously complicated organization in recent months, as it looked to address stock declines and simplify share ownership. Maffei’s announcement Wednesday coincided with an agreement in which Charter Communications Inc. will acquire Liberty Broadband Corp. in an all-stock transaction that will unite two of Malone’s key holdings.

Liberty also said it plans to split off the Liberty Live Group into a separate public entity that would contain 69.6 million shares of Live Nation Entertainment Inc. and Quint, which offers ticket and hospitality packages to sports and entertainment events. Liberty Media will be an independent company that includes holdings in Formula 1 and MotoGP.

Maffei rubbished those rumours and Autosport understands his announced departure has nothing to do with a change of stance, with Liberty remaining steadfast that the series is not for sale.

Likewise, the US Department of Justice investigation into Liberty concerning its rejection of Andretti’s bid to join F1 is understood to have had no impact on Maffei’s exit.

Maffei confirmed during a quarterly earnings call in August that the company faced an official probe by the justice department's Antitrust Division over the legality of refusing entry to Michael Andretti's team.

The fact Maffei is set to operate in a senior advisor role to ease the management transition, with Liberty chairman John Malone stepping in on an interim basis, suggests no ill-will in the parting of ways.

It did, however, coincide with an announcement that Liberty Media was planning a split-off between the Liberty Live Group and the subsidiaries within.

Inevitable, but I wish they'd at least get serious about improving the racing at Monaco

Glad it's staying too. If for nothing else keeping it forces them to keep the cars capable of at least going around it, which has knock on effects on every other track.

This is the third person to leave FIA in about a week.

Paolo Basarri has left his position as the compliance officer of Formula 1's governing body the FIA.

Multiple sources, both at and close to the FIA, said the Italian had been fired as a consequence of FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem losing confidence in him.

Basarri is said to have pushed back against or tried to navigate around a number of requests of Ben Sulayem, who took exception to that approach.

The FIA has declined to comment, while Basarri told BBC Sport: "I cannot comment on this."

Basarri is the official who compiled a report into allegations that Ben Sulayem interfered in the operations of two races during the 2023 season.

The race director leaving before the final of the season. Not everyone is a Michael Masi.

Honestly all these people getting fired is so sketchy. It all appears to have something to do with them opposing MBS. I'm getting dictator vibes.

Damon Hill quitting Sky Sports. Another win for the fans after they ditched Herbert.

Hopefully unlike Herbert he can steer clear of becoming a pathetic shill for betting sites, or of trying to use F1 stewarding to amplify his own personal platform.
No fan of Hill but the fact Danica is still on the team is ten times worse. I'd rather have grouchy Damon than that weirdo.

Hopefully Sky don't tempt Coulthard or Webber over as I enjoy the crew on C4 which includes Lee McKenzie, Alex Jacques. Sky has been terrible for so long except for Martin Brundle. Herbert can't even do post race interviews well enough.

Stefano Domenicali is said to be leaving his F1 role, but stay with Liberty Media and move to MotoGP.

Lots of changes for sure. You d figure at some pt someone is going to spill the beans though many of them are probably under strict NDAs
Rumours are that Liberty President/ CEO stepping down because with Trump and the Republicans having won the elections, Andretti - with the support of the republicans - is 'going to war' against F1/Liberty Media to get on the grid.

Another reminder how much I am not looking forward to the next 4 years. It was nice to not have to pay attention to DC shenanigans every day. Politics can't stay out of anything. Don't have anything against Andretti but for as capitalist as we supposedly are in this country, we sure like to have government intertwine with business A LOT

It's Vegas this weekend. Last year's race weekend gave us one of the greatest off-track moments...

The recent exodus of high ranked FIA members and now the announcement of the departure of the CEO, something is not right. They might not be connected but who knows whats going on behind the closed doors.

FIA Bumps up Canadian GP to May from 2026

With renewed commitment and collaboration, from the 2026 season, the Grand Prix is set to be scheduled on the third or fourth weekend of May each year, with all future Formula 1 calendars subject to confirmation by the FIA’s World Motor Sport Council.

The move will allow the European leg of the F1 season to be consolidated into one consecutive period over Europe’s summer months and is planned to remove an additional transatlantic crossing by the F1 community each year – meaning significant associated carbon reductions.

Kick Sauber special flame Vegas livery

I care for these modern liveries as much as I do for the packaging of soft drinks.

And it literally looks like what I remember a Monster can looking like in the mid 2000's too.
