How Does Indy 500 Qualifying Work?
Indy 500 qualifying is one of the most complex parts of the race to wrap your mind around if you’re coming in from Formula 1.

  • 34 cars have entered a race that only 33 cars can start. One car will be “bumped,” which means it won’t make the field and will not start the race.
  • Oval races utilize single-car qualifying, which means one car is out on track each time. However, the Indy 500 requires drivers to complete four fast laps to qualify; the average time of those four laps will be used to qualify the driver.
  • Cars (not drivers) are assigned their qualifying position by random draw. This determines who will qualify first and who will qualify last.
  • Every car is guaranteed one attempt at qualifying.
  • After every car qualifies on Saturday, drivers can continue to make different attempts. Two “lanes” will open in the pit lane. Lane 1 is the priority lane. The cars in this lane will be allowed to qualify before everyone in Lane 2, but that comes at a cost: you have to withdraw your qualifying time. That means you could set a worse time than before, which you’ll be stuck with.
  • The cars in Lane 2 will only qualify after those in Lane 1 have finished, but they do not have to withdraw their time. If a car in Lane 2 qualifies slower on its second attempt than its first, it can retain its original qualifying time.
  • Saturday sets positions 13-30.
  • Sunday qualifying is split into three different sessions: the final three, the top 12, and the top six.
  • This year, Saturday’s four slowest cars will battle for the final three spots on the grid. One will not compete in the 500.
  • Then, the 12 fastest cars from Saturday will compete for faster times. The fastest six cars will move on; the slower six will have their starting position based on their times.
  • The final session pits the fastest six cars from the 12-car session against one another to determine pole position and the starting order for the first two rows of the grid.
 
Practise is not any less mental.
How Does Indy 500 Practice Work?


Here’s how practice shakes down each day this year:

  • May 16: Two hours of veteran practice, followed by two hours of rookie orientation and refresher practice for those who have been away from the 500, followed by three hours of full-field practice.
  • May 17: Six hours of full-field practice.
  • May 18: Six hours of full-field practice.
  • May 19: Six hours of full-field practice, followed by the qualification draw which determines the order in which each driver attempts to qualify.
  • May 22: Two hours of full-field practice.
  • May 26: Two hours of full-field practice, followed by the Indy 500 pit stop challenge (a fun elimination-style event where crews compete to complete the fastest pit stop).

They have their own powertrain department that will produce their own powertrain from 2026 onwards.

Its sensible by lawrence stroll. No championship has been won with a customer powertrain. Its only ever been the works team.

I think they have ambitions to be the best, and they’re not going to get there, or be allowed to get there, if they have to rely on the engines Mercedes allows them to have.

They will be the honda works team. Its a no brainer for AM. Normally with a new substantive rule change, a different team comes out on top. Every chance it could be AM-Honda. Sensible move by AM.
 
Honda finally confirmed Aston Martin F1 engine supplier.

Watanabe also said Honda – who will enter their fifth stint in F1 – have no plans to supply power units to “any other parties” other than Aston Martin from 2026 onwards.

I thought it's just nostalgia, but F1 was simply much better before after watching this. Incredible racing.

There's loads of old F1 races on youtube. They're never there for long (when it's not posted by F1) but every single race of the 80's or 90's would be the highlight of the season if it were to take place now.




800 BHP, wet surface and a track everyone would tell us is unfit for F1 these days. NO DRS.

Yes, it was. It's been on a steady decline for a while but Netflix has totally killed it off.
 
Tough weekend for Merc to know if the upgrades work but it does at least give them some data before Spain.
 
Despite being so naff, they're the only team I trust still to mount a challenge of sorts to Red Bull.

I think until the regs change again it's likely to just be roll reversal from 14-20. Merc will steal the odd win here and there but ultimately RB will be unmatched, depressing but reality.
 
Wolff was saying he can only see about 0.6 per lap gain in this new approach but with more development potential.

He’s not getting excited about it when Red Bull are 55 secs ahead at the end of the race. Realistically it’s until the second half of the season when we’re going to see any gap to Red Bull closing, unless Pirelli’s new slick from Silverstone puts them at a detriment to the rest of the field.

I’d be surprised to see them any where near the top 4 this weekend.

All bets are off for monaco. Its all about qually (cars will be setup in max qually trim not max race trim), if someone can banzai a lap early in q3 then have a gentle "crash" on their 2nd run. They will be on pole.

Danny Ric won monaco with 100bhp missing from his car. If i was a betting man, id guess alonso or leclerc will be on the front row with a RB. Street circuit so cant rule out perez beating max in qually.

I would say this is Alonso's best chance of a race win this season, he is good on this track.
Max and Perez cant reley in their pure strightline speed here, hard track to pass on , only a few places you can and yeah I would put Perez ahead on street tracks.
Not th track for major upgrades, but forced on Mercedes after last weeks washout.
But thinking about it, if Mercedes get those upgrades working stright out of the box, on this track you never know.
