F1 2022 Season

If it's a Q2 lap time that gets deleted he should end up 15th?

Or are they going to give him some other penalty to make up for their own mistake letting him into Q3.

Rather bizarre isn’t it? He just shouldn’t have been in Q3, it would have taken less than a minute to sort that and allow the 11th car in.

The Perez thing has to be one of the stupidest decisions by officials I've seen...erm, this week.

Max is probably the quickest driver in F1, I wouldn’t argue against that opinion but he isn’t dragging a car into pole, come on, it’s a quick car and has been all season.

Perez is not a great qualifier, never has been, if a career was measured on quali Perez wouldn’t even still be in F1, he’s there because he’s very solid in races. I don’t really buy his excuse of development moving away from him, he’s just not a one lap guy. He’s a specialist at some tracks but not many, Max rightfully dominates him 9 times out of 10.
I definitely wasn't saying that he's dragging even an average car onto pole, it's the best car on the grid. I also agree on Perez being a weak quali performer and that possibly flattering Verstappen's performance. But I don't think the Red Bull by itself is so far ahead of the Ferrari at this point that would be a walk in the park if you sat any driver in the Red Bull.

Red Bull where much stronger in Silverstone relative to Ferrari than they are here imo. Race pace for this weekend is anyone's guess

I think Max was down a tenth in the first two sectors from his first lap in Q3 where he has generally been the quickest. He could have had a lot more comfortable pole in the end, needed a mega final sector to clinch it

True but Silverstone he just looked much more comfortable if say despite the fact he didn't get pole there

Should be a fantastic race tomorrow. The cars look fairly even and with the DRS I don't see 1 car leaping away.

Lets hope there is some good action.

I need something to cheer me up after that Mclaren performance

Wow, all of Perez's q3 lap times deleted, so will start from 10th.

First time I've ever seen that happen. A bit unfair to the 11th placed driver from q2!

It's a fair decision but ridiculous that it even came to this - was obvious on the broadcast he'd gone off. Gasly is right to be aggrieved - not sure if he'd have gotten past Russell but he'd have at least started 9th given Hamilton didn't put in a real Q3 lap.

Dont understand how they note his lap but let him into Q3 anyway.. Gasly should be complaining about that, not that he'd have been able to do anything in Q3 but all the same.

They fecked up and noted it after the session had begun. It's a big feck up considering the Knock on effect

Firstly it's unfair on Gasly as he lost out on places because of race control.

Secondly even though Checos times have rightfully been deleted he now wasted tyres in a session he didn't qualify for. Again a feck up by race control. Really he should get those tyres back because he never should have been told to go out on track.

Gasly the biggest loser in this still but all at the hands of race control.

I totally forgot about this! Leclerc did great in last third of the lap, but Max was even more impressive.

Watching it on the replay, both Mercedes crashes seemed like a driver mistake, or it was the risky setup? If it's the setup, I can't see how they'll last race/sprint with those kerbs.

Sergio Perez has had all his times from the final round of today's qualifying session deleted as well as his fastest Q2 lap, dropping him from fourth to 13th place on the grid for tomorrow's sprint race in Spielberg, Austria.

Many drivers had their times deleted during the session for exceeding track limits. But Perez' final Q2 lap time was allowed to stand despite video footage showing him clearly straying wide at turn 8.

The lap ended up being good enough for sixth place at the end of Q2 meaning the Red Bull driver progressed to the final round in place of AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly. Without it, he would have missed the cut in 13th.

The race stewards didn't have time to look into the incident further until after the session. When they did, it was decided that the lap time should be deleted. And because that meant he didn't make the cut, all his Q3 times were deleted too.

"It is disappointing to lose fourth place," Perez commented. the track limits are very tight here this season, but it is frustrating that the Team weren’t told my lap time had been deleted during Q2.

Team principal Christian Horner added: "We feel the penalty for Checo was very harsh and should have been dealt with before Q3 to enable us to improve subsequent performance."

"Perez left the track at Turn 8 on his last flying lap of Q2, just prior to the end of the session," said the official statement from the FIA stewards.

"As this was not identified until the moment before Q3 started, the lap was not deleted prior to the start of Q3 and Perez started Q3.

"The usual penalty is deleting the lap time concerned, and the stewards order the same penalty here.

"As a consequence the driver would not have proceeded into Q3 and therefore, in fairness to all the other competitors, the stewards order that all the lap times for Q3 for the driver also are deleted."

The deletions mean that Perez will now line up in 13th place on tomorrow's sprint race grid.

Russell also had to visit the stewards after he was seen crossing the still 'live' track to get back to pit lane.

The stewards concluded: "Russell had just crashed in turn 10 and caused a red flag. He then crossed the track on foot and entered the section of the pit lane that does not have a speed limit, without permission from any marshals.

"At the time he started crossing the track, some of the cars were still on track and could possibly have missed the pit entry, causing an unsafe situation. The stewards spoke to the driver and he was issued a warning."

The warning - rather than a formal reprimand - means that Russell hasn't been fined, and has not been handed a grid penalty for tomorrow's race. That is, provided Mercedes can repair his car overnight without engine component changes.

bit of info if you do the Fantasy League.

Important: Sprint race
This race uses a sprint race on Saturday to decide the grid for the race on Sunday. Qualifying sessions on Friday will decide the starting order for Saturday's sprint race.
In Superbru, the pick deadline for Early Bru Points will be the start of the sprint race. When picking pole, you are still picking the driver who will start the race at the front of the grid, after any penalties have been applied.

Caught up with qually. Really dislike the sprint races as it takes the shine off qualifiying. Interesting that both Mercedes lost their rear ends. Blaming wind and driver error is easy enough, but i think they may have done somethin setup wise that has come back to bite them in the arse.

Unlucky Perez, the penalty seems harsh. Seems the development of the RedBull over past few races is going further away from his driving style and more to what max wants (which is to be expected). New cooling rear vent on the RB and changes to the floor edge this weekend.

Not planning on watching any sprint races this season. Will just check the result. I find it lessens the actual Sunday GP for me personally. Probably a too big an ask but id like a different track layout for the sprint race compared to the GP.

Also interesting fact i learnt during qually. RB dont need a warm up lap and can can get the tyres in the window straight away. Ferrari need one lap otherwise they loose 0.5 sec to the RB in qualifying and Mercedes need two warmup laps to get the tyres in the right window otherwise they have a 0.8 sec deficit to the RB in qualifying.

Crazy how important it is that the tyres are in the right window and how getting them their sooner makes a huge difference to your approach to qually.

Weren’t the Ferrari’s the best at lighting up there tires at the start of the season, maybe it’s a change in tire dynamics to ease how harsh they were with them.

Looks like 2026 could be an interesting season and beyond. At the moment it seems most likely we are going to have a RedBull with Porsche supplied engines. Potentially a Alpha Tauri or Andretti team with Honda supplied engines (so they would become the works team) and Sauber (Alfa Romeo) being bought out by Audi.

That would be a helluva powertrain lineup on the grid, Renault, Ferrari, Mercedes, Audi, Honda and Porsche.

Probably get a definite answer on 2026 powertrain spec before xmas as the manufacturers need to start work on their 2026 powertrains.

Not sure, the RB is the best car on the grid in a straight line, for controlling porposing and bouncing and for getting the tyres into the window straight away.

You'd have though that with the ferrari being such a rounded package and great through corners that it would be kinder on its tyres. Apparently not. Must be related to the porposing/bouncing they have still to eliminate.

I mean if you read the quotes he says for the top teams it's not enough and for the bottom teams it's too much.

Said that they understanbly compromised.

9/10 teams voted for it after all. Sure Toto wishes it was more as well
I am sure he does, I am sure the top 6 teams would want more
"It's not enough for us, and it's too much for the little ones. So it's a compromise, and a consensus was found in the end." Thats always been the case in F1.

Apparently no Merc till mid way thought FP2, changing the gearbox's was delayed due to the curfew.
Interesting that Merc decided not to use one of their 3 past midnight curfee exemptions.

Ps. I think this is the most pointless fp2 of the sprint weekend and shouldnt be allowed. Cars are in parc fermme so you cant change settings and try different stuff so whats the point?

Data collection which helps understand the car better and can help optimize race strategy.

Hamilton has a new chassis, so damage must have been worse than it initially seemed. Theres 15 odd mechanics working on his car simultaneously. Impressive coordination.

I can see your point about this FP2, but Mercedes would say it was very important.
You can tweak some things, one thing that can be done, front wing can be adjusted using existing parts but no parts can be added, removed or replaced.
