F1 2019 season

The best thing about Rich Energy is Chris Harris trolling the shit out of them on twitter.

What do you make of the impact that Lando Norris is having on McLaren and F1 at the age of 19.
It is great to see how well he has done in his first year and he looks like a real star in the making.
Just as impressive is the progress of McLaren after so many years way off the pace.
Williams however are showing no signs of improvement which is such a shame.
Not sure how much longer they will be patient with Clare Williams. At least George Russell is consistently quicker than Kubica.

Can't see Frank firing his daughter. She's basically running the team and so he'd be loathe to lose control even if it is (via Clare) by proxy. Can understand of course, but there is an uncomfortable decision to be made.

Despite their attempts at rejuvenating the team, whether from an perspective or commercial, nothing seems to have worked. Someone has to take responsibility.

I understand the point about his daughter but as you quite rightly say, nothing is working despite a number of personal changes.
I am amazed that they manage to attract any sponsorship at all.

On a positive note, they are consistently the quickest on pit stops...

Wouldn't want to make any assumptions about how team is run, but the harsh facts from team budgets (2018) indicate they are falling behind despite having a reasonable budget relatively. I saw that the money from having Stroll as a paid driver gave them approximately half of their total budget. That's a massive amount to lose this year. Can't see a way out for them bar a spending cap and I can't see that happening.
.
F1 Team Budgets 2018 (Autobild)

Mercedes € 450M
Ferrari €430M
Red Bull €350M
McLaren €250M
Renault €200M
Sauber €135M
Williams €135M
STR €125M
Haas €110M
Force India €110M

They need to form an alliance with a manufacturer but Claire and Frank probably don’t want to do it because she knows they’ll never be champions if they do.

Look at the rest of the teams and all but Williams are virtually partner teams. They need to be turned into a development team for Mercedes Benz

Have a listen to last missed apex podcast with Matthew Carter (Lotus director from 2013 to 2015). Interesting stuff and few bombshells.

Going to the GP tomorrow sat at Becketts, just wanted to see if you recon I need any kind of ear plugs?

Assuming not with the engines now but never been live and know area of track has an impact too so just wanted to check.

0.006 seconds separate Bottas on pole and Hamilton in P2. Big error on his first lap cost him pole in the end. Vettel in P6 though, what's wrong with him?

Nice to see it so close at the front, and good job from Bottas to get in front of Hamilton. Vettel in no man's land...

Better race that way around I think. Don’t see Bottas disappearing into the distance but Hamilton would have.

Wtf happen to Vettel this year? No where near to the top at all. You would imagine seeing Lewis got his 5th would make Vettel motivate to get his also. So disappointing from him.

Anyone else seen Weekend of a Champion? It's fascinating to see how unsafe F1 was back in the 70's. People just milling about on the track, no pits at all, sharp kerbs, little protection for spectators. Yet it's massively cool watching Jackie Stewart stroll down to the start from his hotel and just climb into his car and win the fecker. Graham Hill was a seriously cool dude too. Francois Cevert, if he hadn't died in that awful crash, would surely have drowned in pussy at some point.

I watched a fantastic interview yesterday on C4 between Toto Wolf and Gareth Southgate.
Two very smart guys comparing the challenges of eachother sports and two who have a very modern view of leadership.
Toto Wolf made a very interesting statement.
'Leadership is not about me. It is about them'.
They are of course the people who need to be lead and it is about empowerment of them by the leader.
He actively encourages discussion and is happy with disagreement providing it is aimed at the common goal.
I was extremely impressed with one of Gareth Southgate qualities. He is a very good listener and strong at dealing with people.

Brundle is unstoppable

“No one can talk to Daniel Craig”

10 seconds later

“How are you Daniel?”

Hopefully Max's car is fine, think he has a shot at the win today given how close he was to the Mercs in quali. Not sure of the logic behind the Ferraris qualifying on the softs but they should be rapid on the first couple of laps at least.

Anyone listen to F1 podcasts?

I listen to the following:

Checkered Flag Podcast (BBC 5 Live) - pretty decent for a quick preview, recap of qualifying and the race. Jolyon Palmer is good on it, Jack Nichols can grate at times.

Formula 1 Podcast (3 Legs 4 Wheels) - weekly indie podcast by 4 dudes from the Isle of Man. A less serious/polished podcast but good fun with decent insights.

Parc Fermé Podcast - US based weekly podcast. Good insights, particularly like the pre/post race analysis from Brit ex-racing driver Paul Charlsey and his track talks. The fortnightly ‘news’ update with Grace can be a bit of a struggle to listen through sometimes though.

F1: Beyond the Grid - new to me. Tom Clarkson interviews an F1 figure weekly from both past & present. Really interesting, particularly some of the older engineers/team bosses which fill in gaps in my F1 history knowledge. Would definitely recommend if you’re into the ‘behind the scenes’ aspect of F1. Some of the tales are cracking.

Anyone got others they’d recommend?

I like Missed Apex. They are Hamilton fanboys, but that's ok.
