Ezequiel Garay

31/32 year old who has had a year out with a Knee injury for 25 million ?

If any moneywhore club will come in for Vidic it will be Anzhi I reckon. What would people say about a £15 million bid for Vidic?

As a fan, no, if I was in charge, 15 million + 120k pw off the wage bill would be tempting.

I'd reluctantly take the cash. In the long-term, I'm confident that the partnership of Smalling-Evans will be a colossal. Heck, and that's even ignoring the beast that is Phillip Jones.

Bloody hell. I wasnt serious.
I wouldnt sell Vidic for any amount. feck the money. I want Vidic.

Anyway, if it does end up that we do sign him I'd imagine it'd just be as cover for Vidic when hes out. He used to be a good goal threat from set pieces at Racing, something we miss when Vidic isnt playing although Evans got a few this season. Its obviously not the same. Having said that, looking at wiki he really hasnt kept his scoring up which is a concern... Used to be the only standout part.

That would also be a concern if it were true.

:lol: 15 million for a player who has come back to his best almost instantly and is up there with the very best in the world? feck that. Selling Vidic wouldn't accomplish anything, and no club would be willing to pay as much as he is worth because of his age. He's got a few more years left at the top level, and if he left our defence would just be shite (as it was for pretty much the whole time he was injured).

Smalling and Jones just aren't ready to be first choice center backs for a club like United yet, and probably won't be for another 3 or 4 years at least. That's also with Rio probably having one more season after this year.

Even if we can only have Vidic for 2 years (and then he leave for free), it's worth more to the team than a mere 15m. After 2 years, Evans, Smalling, and Jones will be ready to take the mantel.

15m is really nothing, if it means our chance to (more than likely) retain the league title increase by significant percentage with Vidic in our side.

Did anyone watch the first half of this season?

Vidic and Rio need to stay, but they can't play every match. United looked susceptible to crosses and corners before Vidic returned.

Supposedly Garay lacks speed, yet is a commanding presence. That's the perfect antidote for the Stoke's of the world.

I'm muddled. Some people are speaking as if this transfer is a sure thing. I can't even find any believable rumors about it.

I can't believe there are people actually discussing selling Vidic after the stunning impact he's had on our season. I wouldn't accept any offer in the world for him.

Same. He's our best defender and he's experience is vital especially when Fergie is planning a final push on the Champions League trophy. He's age doesn't even come into it. You just look at how well Rio has adapted with age and his back injury and I see no reason why Vidic can't continue to make huge contributions to our team for years to come.

Find it very hard to think VIdic or Rio are of at the end of the season. If we sign Garay ,and it is still a big if I feel it will be in addition to our current defenders.

Ehm - yes you would :)

There isn't a single player in our squad I wouldn't sell for say... £60-70 mill

And if a £30 mill offer came in for Vidic - we would probably let him go, but we will never get that kind of offer for him - and for £15 million he is worth more to United than the money.

Well I don't see how that will happen when two of them rarely get to play, and when they do, it's hardly ever at centre-half. I'm not saying we should sell Vidic at all, but I'm saying that it's almost a contradiction to say 'keep him until the younger ones are ready'. Smalling, for instance, will probably be a lot closer to being 'ready' this season if Vidic wasn't here. Smalling and Jones will need more than their current share of games, especially at centre-half, in order to become they players they can be.

For what its worth I'd be completely against selling Vidic for £30m let alone £15m. I just wanted to see whether people would be able to see past his age and cruciate ligament injury and realise he's still one if the best defenders in the world.

That isn't the only factor to consider. Rio Ferdinand is still one of the best defenders around too. However, would you reject £30m for him?

Again, I am not personally advocating the sale of Vidic. In fact, even should Rio leave this summer, I am not convinced we need another centre-half. The other 4 are good enough, and Michael Keane could also provide cover in that role.

In other news, Garay recently changed his agent to Jorge Mendes.

err...

Ah, I had no idea Garay has just recently appointed Jorge Mendes as his agent.

Interesting.

You're out of your mind if you think Smalling is a better centre-half than Jones - I doubt if Smalling will become anything other than a squad player.

What skillset has Jones shown that would lead you to believe he is better than Smalling? Don't give tosh like he is 2-3 years younger.

Smalling is way better and definitely first team material

Out of my mind? A bit strong? I have seen nothing so far to suggest that Jones is a better centreback than Smalling at this moment in time. Smalling is a beast in the air, can read the game fantastically well and composed. A bit of work on his passing is needed.

Jones is a huge talent - and who knows, he might very well be better than Smalling in a couple/few years time. But I'm a big fan of Smalling - this is just my opinion, but in 6/7 years time or so, Smalling will be one of the best in the world as long as injures doesn't scupper him.

Smalling is not really a beast in the air tbh. He's got a size advantage but needs to use it even better. Can be a lot clumsy as well with his feet movement while making a interception or tackle. Plus his distribution needs work.

But yeah, he is better than Jones right now at CB and probably RB too.

Jones prefers CB and he's clearly a better, more intelligent player. Smalling has worrying lapses of concentration.

Smalling's errors for us can be counted on one-hand. I don't buy this lapses in concentration theory, nor inferior intelligence to Jones.

In Jones' early games at centre-half, he displayed both regular lapses of concentration and an alarming lack of footballing intelligence. Smalling is positionally excellent, wheras prior to this season, Jones has had games for us in which he's looked like he's never played at CB before in his life.

I'll be honest, the thought definitely crossed my mind when he was coming back in to the team at first. That immediate injury after his first return and then the subsequent only playing one game every week or two had me convinced he wouldn't be the same player. He's been brilliant since then though, even if he can't play twice a week it'd still be crazy to sell him at this point. He's turned our defense around this season and made us much more solid.

I'm sure Smalling would play more this season as CB if he wasn't injured a lot. Giving their injury record (Smalling and Jones), they're not reliable yet to be one of our main CB.

But the main point is, there's still a big gap of class (and experience) between Vidic and Smalling/Jones. In two years, that gap will be smaller, while United still have the service of one of the best centerback around during that transition period.
